What kind of geeks are they?
Programmers? Hardware hackers? Gamers? Gadget geeks?
If your friends are into 3D programming or game development, I recommend some books about OpenGL.
I know I want this one, "OpenGL Game Programming":
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/076153330 3/qid=1134394525/sr=8-8/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i8_xgl/202- 6834711-0899839 ..or maybe even "Open Source Game Programming: Qt Games for KDE, PDA's and Windows":
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/158450406 4/qid=1134395013/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/202-6834711- 0899839
If your friends are into hardware hacking, I recommend "Apple I Replica Creation":
http://books.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/03/ 0429213&tid=222&tid=6&tid=3
I own this book myself and it's pretty cool, it covers almost all the DIY basics for building an 8-bit computer. How cool is that?
And ofcourse, for the gadget freaks you have ThinkGeek and Nerdorama.. -
What about other USB Devices?I think they should have a similar list for weird USB devices, not just drives. My entry would be the USB fondue pot

If there's a will...
If there's a will, there's a way to do it. The real thing here is that there is no such thing as unbreakable security. Even if you leave me no external ports, I can still use my camera phone to take snapshots of my screen as I display the sensitive data and then email it to anyone I choose. How do you stop that? Cavity search all employees every morning? C'mon! You have to pay me a *lot* more to put up with that.
What about the USB storage devices that mimic other things? Like this - a watch - http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/7899/ or this - a pen - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1618595,00.as p. Or how about one of these babies - http://www.xybernaut.com/itemList.asp?categoryID=2 8. It's not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes and can be used to transmit data out of a data center via a cellular card. Hook up a hub and .... I know, because I've seen something similar at least twice already.
Frankly, how crappy are you to your people that they're doing stuff like this? I think this is a real wake up call to the industry to look at how employees are treated and/or compenstated. If you think it's bad stateside, how bad do you think it is overseas where they're making $8/hour?

Re:Why do people download songs?
Hey, that's what I use my plusdeck for. Get a song (by whatever means you wish), record it, no need for the file any longer if you don't want it. Best part is that you can listen to your tunes in a car that lacks a cd player. I hope the RIAA doesn't go after that nifty piece of hardware, as I suppose has the potential to support piracy.

Well, good luck beating this:

Sorry if it looks like I'm plugging a product, but if there ever was an official drink of gamers (besides the Dew), this is it. -

My Solution.
My current rig has 3 workstations, 3 monitors, 1 pda, 1 cell, 2 ipods all at my desk. Not even endluding NAS, VOIP device, cable modem, firewall/router, switch, wireless access point and the requisite UPS. My soluton for this electronic jungle? (Five) of The ever popular PowerSquid by Power Sentry, (Two) Belkin 10-Outlet Surgemaster Gold, (Two) Cable-Safe's Cable Manager Kit. The combination works well, I'd recommend it.

Powersquid?
I have a lot of wall worts, so I found the power squid handy. Picked one up at Fry's for $15.

Re:Don't be so down on ithttp://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/lights/5a47/
Thinkgeek has a green laser pointer which I just found yesterday. It sounds interesting, but it makes no mention of melting styrofoam cups from across the room. Is the one that's currently avaiable from thinkgeek a different model?
-
Re:Don't be so down on it
I got the green/red combo pointer for Christmas last year. The green laser is amazing. It's so bright you can see the lightbeam in the dark. Very useful for pointing out stars. It also makes you feel sort of like you're wielding a lightsaber.
ThinkGeek sells them right here... -

Re:Of course it isn't necessary
Ads in games aren't exactly new.
Am I the only one who noticed Bawls in the fallout series?
To be honest I think it added a sense of "oh ya I guess that could be our future" to the game.
If done tastefully and correctly placement distracts less than having a can of 'cooko-cola' on the table rather than 'Coca-cola'.
Heck my first GTA hack was to put back in Real products into the game rather than fake ones for Ads and Billboards. -
Re:ooOOoo!!
You can only use it if you get one of these to go along with it...

I wonder...
I wonder how long before it will be that the same places that outlaw talking on a cellphone while driving have to add iPods to that list? I've never been in a situation where I needed to watch tv so bad that I felt I had to carry one around with me everywhere.
Would I feel differently if I had one of my own? Doubtful, (though I am open-minded about it) because I'd much rather have someone buy me something that I could really use, like a new garage door opener.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, yadda yadda, but paying all that money for a tiny TV just seems ridiculous to me, when there are so many other things that I could use, like this. You never know when they might save your life! -
Re:NOT insightful -- disinformativeAre there any inexpensive devices that will monitor the power use of individual devices? I'm even more interested in how much power is being used by all the standby lights around the house.
Check this guy out:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/7657/It monitors a single power outlet, but it would tell you how much power your system is using with just a standby light running on it.

Re:Surge Protectors
Maybe you need this thingy. When you turn your computer off, it turns off the bottom outlet (for all your peripherals).

Re:The most undetectable keylogger
If you've ever seen a PS/2 to AT keyboard connector, that's pretty much exactly what one looks like. Thinkgeek has a hardware logger here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/5a05/ 128K or memory only though. There are more sophisticaed models that have more memory.

Easy way to defeat KeyLoggers
I just scraped all the letters off my keys! Ha! Try and see what I'm typeing now!!! This I saw this kewl keyboard. It comes with the letters already scraped off. SWEET!

Who needs software?
If you have access to a computer (or more specifically behind a computer) just add one of these:
for PS/2 Keyboards
or for USB Keyboards
Anti-virus and anti-spyware won't protect you from this kind of technology. -

Re:rearrangenow here is the solution : rearrange the room, that no one can get behind you without you noticing it. Use a webcam, a mirror (chimp ? ) if not possible otherwise.
I think http://www.thinkgeek.com/ sells rear-view mirrors for monitors.

Re:Test Your Gear
Great idea on testing your current current draw. I picked up an inline watt-meter at Radio Shack. I think I only paid $20. I was surprised to see it in the store, and since it was nicely priced, I picked one up. I was surprised at the wattage of different devices in my house. My PCs used quite a bit less than I would have expected.

Re:Smallest IP deviceI have a RJ45 connector that is wired up as a crossover to itself, so it lets you check carrier and you can ping yourself.
If you don't want to wire one up, you can get an Ethernet Loopback Jack from ThinkGeek.
They also offer an Ethernet Crossover Adapter in case you don't like making crossover cables.

Re:No utility here?
You see this is all some sort of geek payola conspiracy. These pictures will be used by these guys to create the next 'must have' giant microbe that will be sold here on thinkgeek, which is owned by the same mega-hyper-nerd-congomerate that runs slashdot, which just gave them free advertising via this story . . . I too have unwittingly become a pawn in this whole twisted affair by noticing the connection (years of OSDN/OSTG brainwashing) and posting this.
