For a perfect combinationNewer browers are designed with a bad bad goal in mind - rape you of your privacy rights to benefit "partners", "online marketers", "advertisers" (all of them aka "spammers").
IE used to have easy menu access to let you put the current site under "Restricted Zone" or "Trusted Zone", and it disappeared after some version, without explanation, and for questionable reasons.
As a better replacement, whether you are using Mozilla or IE, at least for Windows, immediately download Proxomitron before it becomes illegal.
(it's just a matter of time before some phuckdup company uses the DCMA against it)As for the Unixes, anyone tried NoShit/WebFilter and know if anything new is going on about them?
I know they do roughly the same thing as the Proxomitron, but as a modification to the NCSA web server?

Why I won't use my IBM PS/2 for DVDs [link]
I doubt I'll be using my IBM Model 80 PS/2 for DVDs.
For starters, it's a 386.
For seconds, it doesn't even have a CD-ROM let alone a DVD drive (the prospect of adding more weight to this beast is... unwelcome).
And finally, the thought of having to move this hulk out of my study, downstairs to the lounge, frankly fills me (and my back) with dread. Anything with a bright yellow sticker saying "CAUTION! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIFT THIS GREAT BIG FSKING HUMP OF METAL ON YOUR OWN, MATEY, YOU'LL REGRET IT REAL SOON" (anyone remember the exact words?) is something that, like cast iron cooking ranges, should be put in place FIRST and the building constructed around it AFTERWARDS.
More and more on the great beasts.
(mind you, it plays Doom like a bastard so I can see how people could confuse it with a console)

Considering what MS has at stake...
First, I have to say, this situation is ridiculous. Thankfully, MS doesn't rule the world enough to force us to use MS SQL (although they'd like to think they do), and as I don't use MS SQL, I have no reason to complain about the license. This benchmark-NDA would be a real thorn if I had to use MS SQL (or Oracle), though.
This being said, the whole thing is a chess game of billion-dollar egos. Larry Ellison is, in a roundabout way, launching FUD at MS. The best way for MS to refute Ellison's claim is by having him disclose the info he's gathered or conjured; if MS doesn't demand that, it could make it seem like MS is scared of the results. Instead of refuting Ellison's claim, MS is whining about technicalities. I think Larry's winning this round of ego-chess, unless he's bluffing.

I can't actually provide links, but I can provide some Linux common-knowledge.
As most Linux specialists probably know, the kernel calculates a rough estimate of the system's speed in BogoMIPs (bogus MIPs) when it is first initialized. This figure probably gets used a lot for imposing delays etc., especially I/O wise, where an I/O wait period is much smaller than the x86 clock chip's maximum speed. I can't be 100% certain of this because I'm not a mighty kernel hacker yet =P.
A word of technical detail on the x86 clock chip (skip if bored): every x86 chipset since the PC (I think) has at the very least a single system clock chip on it which gets split into three separate clock master signals. One is for DRAM Refresh (so you can't monkey with that one--much); another is equally vital, although I don't remember exactly what it does. The third is spare for system use, but is by default used for maintaining the BIOS software clock, whether a Real Time Clock (RTC) circuit is present or not.
This third signal can be set to a pretty high frequency, but it is sometimes not high enough to impose I/O wait periods in hardware drivers without making those wait periods longer than necessary and impacting system performance. I think this is usually where BogoMIPs get used...
The bad thing about BogoMIPs is that they are only a rough figure of performance and often get used as a more precise measure than they really are (usually not in a stable kernel though).
The bad thing about BogoMIPs and PowerNow is that BogoMIPs will become even *less* accurate than before. This is probably a very serious problem, as up until now, the kernel has been able to assume that a CPU will stay at the same speed it had at boot time and thus assume a fair degree of consistency in the actual BogoMIPs rate at any time. This assumption is no longer valid with PowerNow.
So...my guess is that this PowerNow thing WILL cause a severe problem--not just with Linux, but possibly with many other operating systems as well. This problem could be worked out, though; the kernel is capable of monitoring CPU clock frequency, so that clock speed at any given time, combined with clock speed at the time of BogoMIPs calculation, could be used to calculate a factor to apply to the original BogoMIPS calculation and thus get a fairly accurate current BogoMIPS calculation. This would probably impact performance a bit.
I'd guess that in future kernels, you would see the "Support PowerNOW!" config option within the CPU Features submenu of the kernel config script. For those who don't know about this (and are actually interested in knowing), check the Kernel-HOWTO at Linuxdoc.org

What about intermittent failures?
This still doesn't cover the issue of intermittent failures, though. Think on this: if memory were obviously good or bad, then bad memory would probably not even pass the initial memory check in a system. Yet bad memory often does pass even the most strenuous checks, even with ECC enabled (I had this problem myself). And if the "good/bad" status falls about such a hazy line, how effective can any piece of software be at singling out a defective chip?
This BadRAM patch will probably improve the situation, of course, but it can't pick out every bad chip thrown at it unless it checks every chip for eternity. Obviously, that's not going to happen...so...system reliability is still compromised, if only less so.

And I've certainly dl'd MP3's over 56kbps.
But you can't create them in the United States and several other countries without buying licensed software from a software firm that pays the MP3 encoder software patent license royalties, which are currently USD$15,000 for the first 6,000 units shipped yearly and USD$2.50 for each additional unit. This is why official LAME binaries will not be released before around 2010 (good thing what happened to copyright duration hasn't (yet) happened to patent duration). BTW, to compile LAME on Win32, get GCC for Windows.
If you think licensing fees are the problem, it's time for you to upgrade.

That's about as low-level as it gets unless you're actually coding all the software yourself. It's not actually a distribution, per se, but rather a manual that tells you where to get the basic software source tarballs, how to compile and install them, etc.
Slackware is good too. All stable release software, all compiled with reasonable options.

Hmmm I have to side with the RedHat basher on this one. I have used RedHat 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2, and their quality started to take a nose dive at 6.0. The reason I have used them anyways is because where I work, that is all Engineering ever has approved for sale (without trying any other distros, I add, except Mandrake). Of course, even though I'm the only one there who knows Linux well, they don't listen to me =/.
5.1 and up have issues with LILO (sometimes it won't install during the initial install script), but nothing that couldn't be worked around. 6.0...the issues seemed to get a little better. 6.1...Samba didn't work in some cases, DHCP was flaky, etc. etc. 6.2, the problems are worse. 7.0, I believe the phrase is "look out below." RedHat posts fixes, of course, but I prefer a distro that's fairly stable right out of the box. FYI, I run Slackware and Linux From Scratch.

Ummm...Slackware 7.0 and Linux From Scratch runs completely stable for me. Part of this may be that of all the software I have, only the nVidia Detonator driver, the 2.2.16 AGP patch, and the DPT SmartRAID V driver are classified as "beta."

As for compiling problems, I had a minor problem compiling the kernel at first, until I moved genksyms to its proper location (something the LFS book left out). Everything else was solved by actually following the accompanying documentation.
As for RedHat, I would never use it as an example of the stability of Linux. RedHat is loaded with beta software. What's bad is that unless you're looking close, you won't notice the "beta-ness." (i.e. you see kernel version 2.2.14-5.0, think "2.2.14=STABLE," and put the appended "5.0" out of your mind. Trust me, 2.2.14-5.0 is at least part beta).

AMD will FIGHT!I can guarantee that AMD will fight Rambus, probably in concert with Micron Technologies given AMD's early backing of DDR SDRAM and mutual self-interest. Jerry Sanders (AMD CEO) is a self-described "Cowboy Capitalist"; he won't knuckle under without a fight. This interview with Sanders will give you a good idea of what he thinks about people who play lawyerball (almost a half-hour, but fun to listen to).

What you need is the Proxomitron
It's a little web-proxy which allows you to place filters on all incoming HTML - so you can remove frames and block banners and counters etc.
This is a good thing in itself and helps to speed up your web access - but it also allows you to put filters on outgoing HTML too.
So you can set it to lie about who you are, what you're using and where you came from (no referral information). -

My Car-MP3 playerWhat I use in my car is an old Pentium-166 mobo + 16 megs ($0) that I had lying around. Add my home-brewed PSU that makes +12, -12 and +5 from an unstable car battery ($10) and my collection of bootable MP3 cdroms ($2 each) and I'm done.
The bootblock just loads the DOS SB drivers and MPXPLAY, a great, visual DOS mp3 player.
The only expensive thing was the 6" LCD screen that accepts PAL signals (driven by a a VGA cable and a DOS util called "vgatv" that), but fortunately for me, I got it for free ($0).
Actually that LCD screen made us think of the whole Car MP3 project in the first place.I must say, together with the 200W speakers, it just plain rocks.

I really think that a lot of the christian hating is just based on a "please leave us alone" attitude. People aren't objecting to say, the Amish, because the Amish aren't trying to force their views on anyone else, despite the fact that most pro-technology people would find the Amish lifestyle anathema.
I do think, however, that there is something seriously wrong in knocking Bush's conservatism and not knocking Gore's conservatism. After all, I'm pretty well convinced that Bush's pandering to the Christian right is just based on vote getting... whereas I believe Gore is a true believer.
At any rate, one or the other is going to get elected and it is going to suck for gamers and people who believe in Free Speech in general no matter which way the election goes.
I suggest computer and console game developers read up on the Comics Code authority, because I forsee something similar in gaming's future:

Information truly wants to be free, and no law can stop it. Let me explain.
If you close off a person completely, no information can come in or out. But if you give them a slight hole to peek through, they can send anything. Muffle me with a gag, but still let me send ones and zeros with my grunts, and I can say anything. If I'm smart enough, I can scramble those bits in ways that outside listeners won't be able to figure out (encryption).
And if I'm not allowed to grunt, but someone can watch my cell, I can send information by doing things that seem normal to someone who doesn't know what to watch for: moving a cup around, scratching my head, etc. (steganography)
Why hasn't information been free before the internet? Because these sorts of bit contortions can be very complicated and require both the sender and the receiver to know what's going on. Computers allow bit scrambling and hiding schemes to be arbitrarily complex and arbitrarily effective, but still be just as easy to use.
Which leads to my assertion: Give me a small hole to send data through, and as long as I'm not blocked off, I can send anything through that hole. Legal measures can't stop me, not even technical measures can stop me.

Excellent post. GNU/Linux is still tens of years behind Macintosh and Windows because the development community continues to ignore the most important aspect of computer design: human interface.

I'm very interested in helping motivate a movement within the GNU/Linux community to focus on design from the outside-in, starting with a detailed specification for a GUI and human interface guidelines, and then working backward to technical implementation.
This approach is the opposite of projects like GNOME and KDE, which are starting out by arguing about open-source licenses and choosing which technologies to use, and then trying to sum it all up to produce something user-friendly. The end result of that approach has been slow, fragmented development and poor imitations of existing commercial interfaces; it's time we did better. -

Re:Needs some touching up yet...
While it's probably true that Linux 2.4 is significantly better than NT at several tasks, there are definitely situations where NT beats Linux 2.2.
The above seems to imply an expectation that 2.4 will be faster than 2.2. That's unlikely. The VFS layer has been essentially rewritten for 2.4, and a lot of filesystem code has had to change with it. This is some of the most performance-critical code in the kernel. The really sad part is that, to date, no serious performance measurement activity has been undertaken by the VFS developers, so we don't really know the performance implications yet. Anecdotal evidence from linux-fsdevel (e.g. this message) suggests that reads may be 10-20% slower in 2.4 than in 2.2, while multi-stream writes may be "much faster". I have tried to get more information from the people making such claims - such as descriptions of configurations, tests used, a more concrete definition of "much faster", etc. - but have so far received no reply. I think they're embarrassed, and from what I've seen (see my essay on 2.4 Linux VFS for more) they should be.

Or so they say...(conspiracy) It can be turned off, so they say. How can we be certain of that? What other information could it be gathering on us? Is this not the ultimate 'Big Brother' device? A quote from their website, "Digital Angel(TM) will remain dormant most of the time. It will only be activated by the wearer or by commands from the ground station. Who controls the ground station?
In actuality, I see a lot of uses for this product, but I rarely trust major corporations to be looking out for my interests when my interests are not in the best interest of that corporation's bottom line. This reminds me of an article a friend of mine wrote on the Technocracy.
The most amazing thing about this kind of technology is it is actually being pursued. While the benefits are reasonably obvious, the potential for misuse is extreme and a strong majority of dystopic novels begin with this kind of advance. I want to affirm that I am not saying this shouldn't be pursued. I like the idea of never being 'lost'.
I just can't wait for the first 'signal masks' to come out, which relay your signal to a different location. That way when someone goes out to rob a bank, they have an airtight alibi (my Angel location log clearly shows I was at home that night.)

He want malaysian to be IT literated, BUT i think his definition about IT is "windows". And by inviting M$ to join MSC, then malaysian can be computer literated.
I totally disagree with him, not just because of the Anwar Ibrahim Case. A lot of people hate him because of this case, and lead toward "reformasi"
Back to technical political issue, Malayian Current government has lack of awareness about the danger of inviting M$ to the MSC. Mahathir want the technology, Bill can give technology but, it make the whole country depend on M$:(

I like your post and I'd like to elaborate some more on that. True non violence, and civil disobediance, means being polite and kind to the policewomen and men, regardless of how outrageous they are being.
