Buy this kid a new gaming-class computer every 2 years.
This investment could save you $100,000 in college tuition fees. This may be advanced, but worth a shot: Game Theory
As far as gameplay goes, follow the mantra of Dwarf Fortress and FTL, "Losing is Fun!".
Occasionally place players in impossible situations so they can experience failure while trying their best.

2.) Again: IF my program has a "bug", how come it ran PERFECTLY here vs. your "trollspeak/trollanguage", 'CruTcHy'... Hmmm?? -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41052117
3.) 'CruTcHy' conceded memory usage with loaded data (where first you criticized me for it & withdrew it) -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41126057
4.) 'CruTcHy' BLEW IT on the print statement -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41126057 (yes, I proved I was well aware of it, but unlike 'CruTcHy' , google-boy/googler? I do my OWN work & write my own inlined code vs. function call overheads & control actually - same reason I didn't use BDE or SQLite - I did the work, myself, perfectly!)
5.) 'CruTcHy' missed the fact that the hosts file DOES need protecting (UAC ACL & write protect help do so) -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41126421

7.) 2 significant folks in the security field who create custom hosts file data host my GUI program in malwarebytes' hpHosts & securemecca -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41126285 for custom hosts file creation & mgt.... and 'CruTcHy' said nobody gives a hoot about my program (seems you do, & fail vs. it, and there's these security folks also).
8.) Text Editors like notepad.exe &/or gedit will NOT handle properly processing hosts file data fully, which 'CruTcHy' had to be "schooled in" also -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41121573
9.) 'CruTcHy' is a troll that's constantly off topic - He had to be reminded of what the topic is here (hosts) since you were trolling calling me homo, retard, & such, plus starting up your trolling b.s. -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41104817 &

11,) CruTcHy says code should be easy to debug & yet doesn't use error-handlers -> http://developers.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3258205&cid=42016197 (we ought to call you "Mr. Crash & Burn", lol... change your nick to that, might as well, after that... lmao!

Re:Homebrew with JoGL
It's 'under the radar' at the moment. You can take that as me being full of b/s if you like, but as an indie/homebrew dev I'd prefer to STFU until very close to release (don't want to promise anything I can't deliver within the next half year). If you've seen or played DCS:Ka-50 or DCS:A-10C then just below that is the quality of product I'm aiming for, but multi-platform (and leveraging all those lovely Java technologies I mentioned, which have saved a huge amount of time - plus all the usual Java goodness like JAXB, JVisualVM etc etc that makes even lil' ol' me much more productive per unit time than someone working on C++).
Sorry I can't give you more info amgo, I intend to reveal a lot at the end of the year. Meanwhile, I'm mid-way through implementing Eric Bruneton and Fabrice Neyret's superb research papers in JoGL/GLSL : check the excellent videos for Proland, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AVh1x-Uqjs, and then just imagine modern multiplayer jets running around there, such as these turbosquid models I licensed:
So, I hope my points about Java + JoGL + JOAL + JoCL + JInput are taken seriously, especially by homebrew/indie game devs that otherwise might be trapped by using XNA when very good free tools are available (I can get less than 1 ms rendering time/1000 fps on an Nvidia 9600 GT mobile on my 2009 MacBook Pro using OpenGL VBOs for the F/A-18 Hornet with around 50k polygons and several textures and a shader for the limb-darkened sun - so Java/JoGL is definitely fast enough for modern games).

Hmm, where have I seen that before..

Re:Cost analsysis time...
You're doing something seriously wrong if you're doing mocap for a month.
Also, there already is a 3D model market, see TurboSquid for example. However, you're assuming that a game is only a patchwork of random disparate elements. It's not. It would pretty much break the fourth wall if you started to notice that you saw that particular soldier in another game, so you'd need people to retouch the models and assets anyway. Besides, you probably want all the models to have the same visual style, so it's probably less effort to just create the models from scratch instead of having to tweak something you bought.
Also, you failed to see that asset production is pretty much a pipelined process: a modeler makes a model, which is then sent to a texturer and an animator to complete. Also, a lot of the costs related to assets are mostly related to client demands. If someone at Disney or Warner doesn't like the look of character X from their license, well, you have to rework it, then send it for their approval again, hear them whine again, etc. Having asset libraries in that case doesn't help.
-
Re:FOSS games
Well, you can always try http://www.turbosquid.com/ Most models there are for sale, but there are quite a few free ones there. I do remember getting a free model of a football (soccer) ball from there sometime ago.
-
cool
everyone knows that prepacked stuff is used in games all the time. There's a whole industry based on it. Check out http://www.turbosquid.com/ sometime. I sell a lot of stock photos of ashpault on there quite a bit. I suspect most folks buying those are game designers working on car related video games...
-
Re:XNA is not bad
I attended the XNA Open House this evening. The first demo consisted of downloading a model from TurboSquid, adding it to a XNA Game project, writing about 15 lines of code
... and boom -- there was a rendered ship that was lit, spining and was controlable by the 360 controller. Ridiculously easy.
The entry barrier has been lowered significant. I forsee alot people taking advantage of this platform. -

It's been done already
I am astonished that no-one has provided a link to the original thousand year old beacon.
I mean really, are we still living back in 2001 or something? -
Why do the assets always go to waste?I'd like to see more instances where the teams of cancelled projects either release their assets into the public domain or license them via a system like Turbosquid. This may not be appropriate for all projects -- for example, in many instances, there is no single owner of all of a game's IP -- but I've seen too many cases where gorgeous art assets, (take a look at Wish's, for example) go essentially wasted.
As an independent games developer, this strikes me the same way as a bakery tossing away perfectly good bread one one side of town while someone's hungry on the other side. Remember when Crack-Dot-Com went out of business and released its content to the public?
Around July, Crack first missed payroll. August came and we moved out of the office. September offered no new news, so we decided to call it quits. Rather than letting all that hard work sit around and rot, we released it to the public domain.
There's a special place in Indie Valhalla for the Jonathan Clark and those like him. Why don't we see more of this?

You know, I had to read that one twice. I kept thinking it said a mace.
I was trying to think how you stayed out of prison all these years. -
Re:I have always wanted to seeWell, you could always do it yourself, now that it's public domain.
Get a hold of Blender for 3D animation and rendering. You can use Terragen to create photorealistic landscapes. You can grab a kick-ass free model of the martian tripod, or if you've got $65 to spare, you could buy a pre-made model of a martian tripod. I don't recall what type of ship the Thunderchild was supposed to be, so I can't provide a link to that, but there are lots of free models you can find for that, too. That should just about do it... all you need for a CGI recreation of the scene, on a budget of $0.
If you don't like CGI, you could just make a paper model of the martian tripod and shoot it on video in your kitchen sink. The quality might suffer a bit, though.
There's a really cool collection of various WotW artwork here that should help inspire you.

Even 3D developers will be confussed
Personally i've been freelance developing 3D art and models for companies for a few years now, and i've learned a couple of things.
Turbo squid is better for artists.
And 3D objects don't get better with age (at least not yet)
This will be GREAT for the production industry (which has moved off shore) as users will be able to forget their skills of automatic recall when it comes to part recognition and sucumb to the all mighty 3D shape database. -
3D on the web has its place / problemsJust like most tools, sometimes 3D is the best. When you need to see something, particularly a product you are considering purchasing online, being able to control the "camera" and see things like what connectors an electronic device has, different colors on cars, etc 3D is very communicative. Down the line, this tech can also be used for 3D games and other purposes.
There is no doubt that 3D is terribly complex -- it's like software in a lot of ways. It has different complexity for each object, and productivity is completely ignorant of Moore and his law. One solution which Intel and Macromedia have been pushing to help with this is creating online marketplaces where vendors from all over the world can publish and aggregate their 3D content for reuse, similar to component reuse in software. One website that does this is Turbo Squid. Why build a ps2 model everytime? If the world can aggregate enough cheap and free 3D content, hopefully 3D will be used frequently and used in a context that makes sense.
