Re:But all the on-line content sucks
You want a Network Media Player. eg an IcyBox MP305 but there are loads of other players based on the same chipset (realtek 1073), or the competitor (sigma erm.. something). They're all quite cheap - £80 or so (ie probably $80)
They all tend to have 1 or 2 USB ports for attaching an external HDD, an ethernet port to connect to your router, and HDMI and composite/optical outputs. They will stream quite happily from a DLNA server (eg PS3MediaServer, TVersity or Twonky) or a SMB share (thought setup can be tricky if you have any security on the share).
I love mine, it just works for all my, erm.. legitimately ripped backups of my DVD collection.
You can find a lot more information on them on my favourite AV forum

Re:Track record
Well, to start, according to Apple that's 13W @ idle, but 110W with CPU load. Big difference.
If powersipping is what you want try the ASRock ION-330 Nettop. The reviewers here couldn't get it to draw more than 40 watts, at full load. But there are differences between this and a Mac-Mini:
1) Mac Mini has a Firewire 800 port, Bluetooth, 802.11n, Mini-DVI-out port, and DisplayPort, and slightly faster processor (although ASRock comes with overclocking package to easily reach 2.1GHz)
2) ASRock has HDMI-out, VGA-out, 1 more USB port, and costs less than 1/2 as much. So with that other $420 you save you could buy a Class 1 USB Bluetooth adapter, a USB 802.11n adapter, and a 24" monitor, and still have change left over for a Dinovo Edge bluetooth keyboard.
Who knows, you just might even be allowed to open it up and upgrade the hardware (RAM, HDD, DVD/RW to Blu-ray, etc) without voiding the warranty. -
Re:Smoking Gun? Hardly
This is a good example of what I find is one of the least desirable traits of the Linux community in general: a tendency to blame everyone else for any failure, whether it's the user who's too stupid or Microsoft who's too mean.
Damn right!
Sure, MS has a bad track record and I have no doubt they tried their best to use their influence in this case
Wait...so you are blaming Microsoft?
;-)Let's look at it this way, via a hypothetical conversation:
ASUS: "We designed an ARM-based Android netbook."
MS: "We don't support ARM."
ASUS: "It's OK; we have Android."
MS: "What percentage of your netbook product line runs XP?"
ASUS: "About 95%."
MS: "If you release the ARM netbook, we'll raise your price per unit from $15 to $100."
ASUS: "Well, I guess that's the end of the ARM netbook. Can we somehow make a public apology?"
MS: "All too easy."Now I ask you: is there any level of mind-blowing Android or Linux OS awesomeness that's going to change that outcome? Don't hold back; really cut loose with your imagination. The answer: no. There's no way they can make up all that expense with one new product.
I could be mistaken. ASUS might have just spent all this R&D and Q&A money on a new kick-ass product, and showed it to the world, and only then realized that Windows didn't support ARM. Or maybe they got too much positive feedback, so they pulled it.
Did you watch the video here? This is one sweet machine that vanished. And from the looks of it, it's not because of the shit OS.

"The great ion.simian.c" (NOT): Proof inside...
Arstechnica's JEREMY REIMER (a blatant FAKE) was caught red-handed alongside his friends impersonating me on his OSY website (to which his hosting provider removed large portions of his website for, lol, & his ISP nailed him for email harassing me, as well as making threats to my family no less, which got law enforcement involved in Canada (& Reimer stopped right there, lol)).
So much for your "edited" arstechnica posts that are not even myself (they like to impersonate others, because that's ALL they have)...
Anyhow - Here we go now, ready (as to your errors here):

All you need is @ the URL from Windows IT Pro (including discussions from email w/ the police + Reimer's ISP/BSP) & as far as your question from w/ in this exchange to myself of "Are you Dr. Russinovich"?
NO, I never said I was - We'd both done paid work for a couple of the same companies @ the same time in the mid to late 1990's in this field & that how I know he, in addition to my helping him find AND FIX problems in his applications (never the reverse though), but I am not he, I am myself. No thank you.
(I wouldn't associate myself w/ they by ANY means - they were caught impersonating myself on their forums, caught email harassing myself by their ISP's, & had law enforcement summoned upon them for it no less, and lastly they were caught impersonating others (via posting as them & admitting to it no less after being caught doing so @ Windows IT Pro magazine forums, no less, publicly to their humiliation worldwide))

Re:What I want to see
If you're willing to accept random block access instead of database access, TweakTown has what you're looking for.
Incidentally, the article is about the FusionIO, which spanks the pants off of the Intel x25 one against eight. The slashdot article is fundamentally wrong.
-
Re:What happened to Fusion-IO ?
It got recently benchmarked, quite unusually as they put it on a "general purpose computing review site".
And there's obviously a market for such devices since Intel/Micron are trying to compete with them.
-
Re:I rather have an eee
I don't think so at least not unless you have the facilities to desolder and replace a BGA chip.
When a laptop designer is trying to save bulk the CPU socket is often sacrificed and this was certainly the case with the EEE.
-
Re:I rather have an eee
It is under the same bottom hatch as the RAM and HDD on the bottom of the Eee PC 1000H.
It had an AzureWave AW-NE766 Mini-PCIe card factory installed so just I removed the standard white and black antenna connectors and swapped cards with my Intel 4965AGN card. (because the Intel card has more features and is well-documented.) I just had no third antenna to connect to the center "gray" antenna connection on the Intel card, but it works fine.)
Here is an article of an EeePC 1000H it with the back cover off, etc... http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1474/2/asus_eee_pc_1000h_under_the_covers/index.html -
Re:Thats what they get
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind, safedisc harmed performance so much that the developers removed it in the first patch. The nocd crack was recommended by just about everyone.
Part of the problem is that the developers don't usually install any DRM, it's usually done by the distributors.
So even if the developers thoroughly test a product, but the public always beta tests the DRM. -
Re:vista onlyYou can either set up Windows Media Player to share your audio and video files to your 360, or any other media streaming service. If you're having trouble with the WMP streaming, try Tversity. It's a great media streaming solution for the 360 (and other devices like the PS3). You can find an article on setting it up for your 360 here.
With this you don't need to worry about formats. It will transcode anything that the 360 doesn't natively accept. It plays my ogg music and xvid video files without issue.

Re:I know that OS X is more secure TRY THIS!
" I am a Mac fan boy, but only because Windows continued to let me down." - by AccUser (191555) on Tuesday December 18, @02:13PM (#21742070) Homepage Read, AND APPLY, what is listed here on a Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 & even VISTA setup:
http://forums.tweaktown.com/showthread.php?s=95da64f88f66f615773c4e77ac12ca87&t=25596
& let Windows "let you down", no more, in terms of security...
Just by following a tool (CIS Tool) that guides you thru MOST of it, & then some more tips that page advises you on in 12 relatively simple steps & rules to use, you won't get "burned" by nearly as much malware of any kind IF any @ all anymore.
(Yes, sometimes you sacrifice some "glitzy" animations & such online, but big deal - better than paying for a spyware/virus/trojan/malware removal).
APK
P.S.=> I've been running the SAME setup since 2002 on 1 system here using the setup noted above on Windows Server 2003 & another system also using it here (not sharing files between them, just online via my LinkSys router), & no virus/trojan/malware/spyware etc. et al on EITHER of them... how? By simply applying what is noted above, & not being stupid... apk -
You can play any vid on the 360 now
Sort of a slashvertisement but it's related to the topic here. Microsoft, being the douches they are, give you a perfectly fine piece of hardware in the 360 but lock it down so you can't view anything but approved videos on it. They put in the really cool feature of streaming off of your PC but again, the PC needs XP, has to be running MediaPlayer 11, and using proprietary MS formats. Sucks, right? But no longer.
Using this neat little program, you can host videos on your PC and use it for the share connection rather than mediaplayer. Videos are transcoded to an acceptable MS format on the fly. The only drawback is that transcoded files have to be completed before search features will work -- no fast-forward or rewind. You can work around that by force-starting the encode cycle and then renaming the resulting cache file and playing it directly.
An installation guide.
The TVersity software download.
Granted, you'd probably find yourself having less of a headache if you just built a dedicated media center PC and sat it next to the Xbox. Myself, I just find the thought of having to buy duplicate hardware offensive. -
Re:Great
BTW at least one firm make a nvidia based graphics card in pci express X1, http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1045/index.html . Maybe you could use a couple of those to drive extra displays.
-
Re:When will old PCI die?
Hah - I can answer both of these.
1. There are PCI-e 1x gigabit NICs and some of 1x video cards around. I think I've seen some 1x RAID cards as well, but I wouldn't swear to it.
I've got a PCI-e 1x gigabit NIC I put into machines without onboard gigabit - performance and CPU usage are both excellent. Gigabit on PCI tends to saturate the PCI bus and have much higher CPU usage - you should always check that any onboard gigabit NIC is PCI-e.
2. Tweaktown did some comparisons of a 7300GT on 1x and 16x - the results show significant differences:
http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1045/pci_e_x1_gra phics_performance_with_galaxy_geforce_7300gt/index .html
Tom's Hardware have two articles comparing 1x, 4x, 8x and 16x by masking off pins on graphics cards. The performance graphs are very interesting.
Original article - X600XT, X800XT, 6800GT
http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/11/22/sli_is_comi ng/index.html
Newer article - X1900XTX, 8800GTS
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/03/27/pci_express _scaling_analysis/
The basic conclusion is that you only need 4x for lower-end resolutions and quality, but if you're pushing high-end cards you really want 16x. -
Mmmm, Karma
Summary.
Advantages of solid state - Lighter, low access time, lower power, no heat.
Disadvantage - Expensive.
Tweaktown solid state 16GB 2.5 HD Review -
Re:HDTV (component 480i counts) only?
To turn the 360 into a useful media center use this program http://www.tversity.com/. It takes a little bit of effort to set up, i.e. must have codecs and such (install help - http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1002/playing_di
v x_and_xvid_content_on_xbox_360_an_easy_guide/index .html), . It runs on a networked PC and transcodes, on the fly, various video formats from your PC (including xvid) into wmv so the 360 will play them (assuming the 360 has a reasonably recent firmware update). It does what I thought the 360 should have done out of the box. After getting this working on my 360, I have since canceled my cable. -
Re:Don't playa hate, congratulate!For #1, check out TVersity (free). There's a decent step-by-step here.
I've had it running on my setup (xbox 360 wired in, Vista RTM on a laptop connected wirelessly) for a while now... works flawlessly for streaming audio, pictures, video... if you've got the codecs, TVersity will stream it.
It replaces the Media Player-based media sharing... not sure how it will affect your MCE setup.

Where is TheTorrent?
What's with not using the word torrent in the whole summary?
Here is the part of the article:
"Applications lets you enable/disable the router's inbuilt applications - Download Master, Download Daemon, Download Share, Photo Album and Media Server, as well as do some basic configuration like specifying the port range and default seeding time for the BitTorrent client, and the default web server port. You can also configure the settings for an attached USB webcam, enabling to run via a web interface, and even turning it into a security camera controlled by the router, which can enable motion detection and email alerts. And finally, locally-attached USB printers can be configured and shared out - ready for connection from UPnP-enabled clients."
And here is the link :)

Re:From someones who owns an HDTV
"Regular signals look like GARBAGE on an HDTV. People who say they can barely notice the difference between progessive scan and an interlaced signal, obviously don't have a HDTV. Its tough to describe, but a 480i signal just looks muddy. And what's worse, each TV varies in how good it displays a standard definition (SD) signal."
With computer generated images the "muddy" look is not necessarily fixed by simply increasing the resolution; as an example read this article which should act an an introduction to AA and AF
http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide& dId=601&dPage=1
Pay particular close attention the the KOTOR section; it has KOTOR running at 1280X960 and when you compare the PNG images the one with neither AA nor AF looks really muddy, on the other hand by simply using AA and AF you get a really crisp clear image. If a developer had to sacrifice AA and AF to get to the higher resolutions you may find that the image produced would be far muddier than the one produced at a lower resolution with AA and AF. -

Doesn't Intel HD Audio encode AC-3 in real-time?The article blabs on and on about how nVidia's SoundStorm is the only audio chip that encodes Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC-3) "on the fly" in hardware and sends it out thru a digital output. But doesn't Intel's new High Definition Audio (part of the new LGA775 chipsets) do this? I'm not sure if the encoding is done in hardware, but Dolby's press release (June 21, 2004) seems to contradict some of the article's claims about SoundStorm's supposedly unique capabilities.
From Dolby's press release:
Dolby Laboratories announced today that the Dolby® Digital Live encoder has been integrated into select 915 chipset-based Intel® Desktop Boards featuring Intel High Definition Audio. Dolby Digital Live is a real-time encoding technology which converts audio signals into a Dolby Digital bitstream for transport and playback through a home theater system via a single digital connection.
From the SoundStorm-worshipping article:Using this technology, users can enjoy PC-based audio entertainment in thrilling surround sound through Dolby-equipped A/V receivers or other devices. PC-users simply connect a single digital cable (such as S/PDIF or optical cable) directly to the home theater system, thus eliminating the confusion and hassle of multiple cables and ensuring the quality of the audio signal.
Additionally, PCs featuring Dolby Digital Live technology enable PC gamers to enjoy realistic and exciting Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround effects during interactive game play by reproducing the audio cues and effects to correspond with the onscreen action.
Not only was the nVidia SoundStorm APU the only sound solution capable of encoding Dolby Digital on the fly (which produces true and accurate 5.1 surround sound via either optical or digital coaxial cable to a set of computer speakers supporting these connections or to an external amplifier), it was also hardware accelerated meaning it does not chew up precise CPU cycles like other inferior onboard solutions which in turn reduces frames per second and do not have the ability to send separate digital signals to anymore than two channels. You'll get 5.1 sound using three analog cables but this type of setup is nowhere near as impressive or realistic as what the SoundStorm produces.
...the beauty of the nVidia SoundStorm APU is that it is capable of encoding Dolby Digital 5.1 on the fly via hardware acceleration and not software (CPU). This means that in any games you play and as long as you are using optical or digital coaxial cable with your surround sound speakers (anything above 2.1 channels), the hardware APU will do the intensive job of reproducing the sound from the game to Dolby Digital 5.1 or AC-3 so you get proper positional surround sound.Onboard sound solutions utilizing their digital SPDIF output (whether it be optical or coaxial, depending on what the manufacturer chooses to go for) can only output to the front two speakers as without an encoded 5.1 signal from the computer end beforehand, what is being sent through your digital optical/coax cable is limited to stereo (two channels) of sound...
The only way you can achieve proper positional surround sound in gaming with all other sound solutions on the market apart from the mighty SoundStorm is to utilize their analogue outputs (centre/sub, front, & rear jacks) but then it is not digital so you don't get the true to life effects of proper digital.

Re:ATi?
ATi does have a product for this; or rather software. http://forums.tweaktown.com/archive/index.php/t-1
4 119.html has a description of ATI Easyshare. It should let you install the MMC software on both machines (the tv tuner as a server). This will allow you to switch channels remotely and automatically does Timeshifting. -

Q: what's with the code-name Whistler'?
A: They were "Odyssey," "Neptune," "Mars", and before that they were using city names "Chicago," "Detroit," "Memphis". But now they've turned to mountain names: Whistler and Blackcomb are popular ski resorts a few hours from Seattle, located in British Columbia.

So they're the culpritsI'd never previously bothered to check who was responsible for those almost invariably completely irrelevant ad-linked words on some sites - [random example]this article, for instance[/random example].
I can see how Vibrant's marketing people could spin this to potential clients, though. The relevance of their machine-generated ad-links is incredible. I mean, how could you possibly tell the difference between one of my link-infested reviews and a page where the word "developers" in a sentence about game programming is linked to this page? Later on, "PC" links, just as spookily perfectly, to the Dell.co.uk Back To School Sale.
Well, actually, that link's broken right now. But I'm sure that's just because of excessive server load from all the people clicking on it.
The Hostway link's there again, from "control panel", as in "graphics card driver control panel", on the next page. In that same paragraph the laser-like specificity of the term "computer system" triggered another perfect-bullseye Vibrant Media link, to some remote network admin software.
If site operators can get themselves some useful income by defacing their pages with these mouseover-box-triggering, reading-interrupting irrelevancies, then more power to 'em. Lord knows I've cluttered my own site with pop-ups and banners galore (which I encourage my readers to block). But Vibrant must have some bad-ass sales people if they can convince anyone to pay any significant amount of money for this kind of advertising.

Installing SP1 and other updates on pirated WinXP
Tweaktown's guide to installing SP1 even on pirated windows XP.
Other updates can be found on Security bulletin search - everything except SP1 (and updates that require SP1) will install on pirated Windows, just will take you more care and effort to select those you need. Alternately, and probably much easier except for the big download, is Autopatcher which is a downloadable which will patch everything up for you - except SP1, which needs to be installed first. -
