Re: 4 meter wing spans?
Oh, and another thing: this article says that there was no claim of responsibility. Nonsense. FSA Free Alawite Movement claimed responsibility for it, and promised more attacks.
-
Re: 4 meter wing spans?
Indeed, an ammo dump at Slinfah was hit by one of them as well - it was first assumed to be an Israeli airstrike, and only later determined to be a drone attack. The drones are perfectly designed for hitting soft targets - rather than single powerful charges, they use 8-20 PETN bomblets, packed full of ball bearings.
Concerning tracking them... these are not that large, and made of wood. I imagine they're pretty hard to track and home in on. Plus, having to waste an antiaircraft missile on someone people glued together with bargain basement parts is asymmetric to the benefit of the rebels. Russia's Hmeimim base is packed full of their most advanced antiaircraft systems, yet they still lost planes (ironically, as usual, they spent the next several days both simultaneously confirming and denying that they got hit
;) ). Locals described the sky as lit up by antiaircraft fire. The US should take a lesson from this and seriously up their efforts toward anti-drone defenses. For now, I expect Russian/Iranian/Assad/Hezbollah/etc forces to put more effort toward hardening depots, airfields, etc against attacks from the air. The drones have a 100km range, which lets them reach from well behind the frontlines.
I would expect GPS to have been jammed at Hmeimim. If not, Russia is incompetent. If so, the drones would appear to be prepared to deal with the loss of GPS signal. Russia was apparently caught off guard with the sophistication of the drones and is now trying to claim that they couldn't have figured out how to make them on their own. I don't buy this at all; both anti-ISIS rebels and ISIS have long been working on drone technology, as well as other "advanced" technology (such as remote-controlled robotic guns).

Re: "Your state is a shithole"
There are 10 countries from which 10 countries currently receive temporary protected status: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. These are the 10 countries that Trump labeled as shitholes. The 10 countries that Trump wants to reduce immigration from, and labeled as shitholes, are all predominantly inhabited by dark-skinned people. The demographics are not in question. Trump then said he wanted more immigrants from Norway, which is mostly white. The fact is, Trump wants to reduce the dark-skinned people entering the United States, and to increase the white people entering the country. The demographics are not in question.
Trump made a racist comment, one of many. Trump is a racist. You're a racist for defending Trump.
Did you just assume Norway is rich and prosper because it is mostly inhabited by whites and that African countries are poor and corrupt because they are predominantly black ?
And you call Trump a racist ? Wow. Project much ?
Also, he didn't call Haiti, Honduras or El Salvador shitholes. Fake News CNN clarified what their source said, after again it seems, pushing out Fake News :

Neo-Nazi charged with terrorism in attempt to wreck Amtrak train, complaint says
A white man who was involved with neo-Nazi groups and who attended a "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville has been charged with terrorism for attempting to wreck an Amtrak train, according to a criminal complaint filed in US District Court.

I also made a helpful graphic for determining when something is "terrorism":

Re:Input latency
A few years back, John Carmack tweeted that he could ping transatlantic faster than putting a pixel on screen. He then explained more fully at superuser.
Since I run smokeping from my home server, I can definitely say that most online services are reachable from my home internet connection in ~20 ms round-trip - or 10 ms one-way.
For contrast, one frame at 30 FPS is 33 ms. (Kind of slow by modern standards, but I'm old enough for 30 FPS to be the threshold of being acceptable).
While it certainly matters to the experience, 2-3 frames of latency between my input and rendered pixels doesn't detract from the experience -- especially for games played with a gamepad (instead of a mouse).
It might not be suitable if you're playing an FPS game professionally, but it's fine for RPG and strategy games.

Uh, really?
Republicans keep claiming liberals are calling them Nazis, but this from Ryan Mac of Buzzfeed news:
James Damore's lawyer Harmeet K. Dhillon: "It's acceptable at Google to promote violence against conservatives." She then brings up memes of punching Nazis that are shared on Google's internal forums
So. There you go. Damore thinks Conservatives are Nazis (all the more worrying as he publically identifies with the former.)
Damore is not a good person. He's an extremist who knows how to couch his arguments in a cloak of faux-rationality. Those of us on the left have been trying to warn those of you susceptible to his arguments that he's not actually being honest. Maybe we shouldn't care, but I really don't actually want anyone fooled by this nonsense.

Re:Because they are waffling on own standards
Nonsense. Trump just has a more demotic and/or laconic way of saying things but his statements are completely equivalent to those of Obama and Clinton. And it's not like the DPRK is reacting any differently. In each case they've reacted in much the same way. E.g. to Clinton
The United States must ponder over the fatal consequences that might arise from its rash act," the statement said. "If anyone dares to provoke us, we will immediately show him in practice what our bold decision is.
Of course as they didn't actually attack the US. Though since Clinton's time they've got both warheads and the missiles to deliver them. And regularly threaten to attack the US and its allies. Pointing out the dire consequences to them of such an action is at this point a pro forma response that any US POTUS will make.
Actually even beefing up missile defences is another thing that each POTUS has done too. I.e. Trump's argot may be distinctive but his actions are well in line with long standing by partisan US foreign policy.

Re:No rules
Not true in the least, Twitter has ethics of a sort. But those ethics only support a particular view point, and in this case Trump feeds the people who are screeching that "Trump's goin' down, really now, any time, RUSSSIA RUUUUUSSSSIIIIIIIAAAA!" If they were being truly ethical, they would have banned terrorist groups that use it, or banned black bloc and antifa members who openly supported, promoted, or engaged in violence. Instead you've got multiple cases where the people who were victimized by them were banned.
Just remember who their "trust and safety council" is, and it suddenly becomes very clear what form of ethics and viewpoint they're going with.

Re:They did not test AMD or ARM
AMD seem to think they're not affected by Meltdown:
AMD processors are not subject to the types of attacks that the kernel page table isolation feature protects against. The AMD microarchitecture does not allow memory references, including speculative references, that access higher privileged data when running in a lesser privileged mode when that access would result in a page fault.
BTB it is almost certainly this email, sent on 26 December, which led to the Meltdown vulnerability being made public, causing the disclosure timeline to be moved up.

Re:Not a climate change article
You know, that was my first reaction too. Then it occurred to me: climate change isn't really a scientific controversy. The controversy is political.
Who was it again who put climate change on the table for this particular localized weather event? A lot of people still listen to that man, which means any story about the North American cold Snap of 2017-2018 has to address their politically rooted misconceptions.

This could be massive
The developers behind the GRSecurity project measured up to 63% performance loss. If most common tasks are equally affected, Intel is sure fucked. Home users might not need to bother, but large cloud providers might be seriously affected.
Meanwhile the Linux kernel has received the largest incremental minor patch in its history (229KiB) - perhaps kernel 4.14.11 already contains all the required fixes.
I have a sneaking suspicion Intel shares will fall through the floor in the next few weeks because Intel CPUs might have suddenly become quite slower than their AMD Zen based counterparts.

Re:Always the left pushing "hate speech" laws.
take a minute and read his tweet:
https://twitter.com/realdonald...
this is after he called for the NFL to fire those protesting.
He took a pledge to uphold the constitution, if he cannot do his job as president without violating the constitution, by directing the government employees under his authority (as he hired and is able to fire the director of the IRS, FBI, FCC...) to take direct unconstitutional actions; he should step down.
So he has the right to free speach, but when that speach violates his oath of office, he should step down. The same is true when he called on the FCC to pull the broadcast licenses of Networks that are not supporting him enough, in his opinion.
I understood that the president speaks on behalf of the country, and is always the president, which is a office of the federal government, and thus covered by the constitution, where am I wrong? If constitution thus applies, he is not allowed to direct through his office, using his official communication channel to call to violate the constitutional rights of individual citizens. He has taken a oath to do the opposite, to make sure they do not.
Of course like so many of his tweets, this one was also wrong, that the NFL has no preferential status..

Re:Always the left pushing "hate speech" laws.
> "freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequences"
Correct, but the first amendment actually prevents the US government from restricting speech, without a overwhelming societal interest. Using a political office to directly restrict political speech is clearly a violation of that amendment. Especially when it is just to protect the presidents ego, because the president stepped into a solved concern, that was handled by the league, until the president made it more than 100* worse by stepping in. I see no problem if the team wants to fire a player, and if fans want to boycott the team. That you have the highest office of the government threatening through their designated official communication channel to take official action if harm doesn't happen to those who don't support his view.
Of course it isn't all the right, at least John McCain understands this president is doing permanent harm to the country: https://twitter.com/SenJohnMcC...

Re:Spider Gwen is pretty popular
Yeah, yeah, the crazy feminist who runs your local community college's woman's studies program is pretty annoying, amiright? But then you've got Harvey Weinstein.
Ah, just the right place to start. Instead of properly attacking the problem of creepy fucks like Weinstein, the crazy feminists you speak of go the #metoo route. Which is making more problems than it fixes. A world where due process is thrown out with the pursuit of justice isn't going to be quite like most women want.
To be perfectly honest, it seems more like those "male feminist allies" are the problem, and since they can't compete any other way they're using the ally path as a means of reproduction. It's not dissimilar to the anti-gamergaters, who turn out to be committing sexual assault, rape, and calling in bomb threats. Projection all the fucking way down. In a year or two, it won't surprise me if this becomes similar to the "anti-gay firebrand" who ends up being caught engaging in the exact stuff that they were railing against.
And let me say, watch the video. Watch it. Sure it's 30 minutes long, but every single one of the people promoted themselves as "male feminist allies" every single one, and went out of their way to attack anyone else who dared to question the feminist talking points or narrative. Just like those anti-gay firebrands.

Re:Leave them alone
If the rest of the worlds leaders can resist opening their mouths there is a good chance Iran can be another success story like Tunisia.
I don't think it is a good chance. After all, Obama stayed out of it during the 2009 protests and they still failed.
But I would say that it is their best chance. Unfortunately, the mullahs have already seized on the "foreign interference" excuse by citing Tom Cotton's self-serving statement.

Re:This is Trump's fault somehow!!!
Oooohhhh that Trump! I can't eat, I can't sleep! All I think about is Trump and I get so angry I just go outside and scream and scream!!!
Nothing like virtue signalling by screaming at a robot.
He's just like a monkey that's proud he jerked off in public and then threw a turd.

Re: Bots
> Not really. It's still text and binaries.
Everything is text and binaries.
Usenet was far more of discussion medium - there are threads in which things are discussed and argued amongst multiple people. Twitter is far more of a soap box medium in which people make a statement which generates some discussion but the format isn't really made for those discussions. For example, the front page of twitter right now has some video of a baby on it: https://twitter.com/dustingrif.... There are 56 comments on it, but 53 thousand retweets and 139 thousand likes - it's pretty clear that the dominant form of interaction isn't actually replying like it would be on usenet.
Bots taking up space in the conversation would be far more intrusive on the discussion format of usenet than on the retweet format of twitter.
> You have chosen to ignore the fact it was used for tarnishing people who weren't involved to begin with and for launching witch hunts.
No I addressed that.

Re:CensorBot
What was curiously absent from the article is any mention of attempts to report the impersonators, twitter has a policy which states that impersonation is not allowed after all.
No, I think twitter's impersonation policy is about impersonating someone specifically.
I found the linked article a useful reminder, I don't always think about this thing about impersonating a type of person. The twitter impersonation policy doesn't seem to make using an image automatically a violation, so I can see how reporting these types of hate impersonations wouldn't do anything, thus the need for this imposter buster bot. If you agree with it is a different story, but you can't say the bot is pointless. -
Re: Wrong approach, kill the nazi faggots
The party was dismantled generations ago, there are no more Nazis.
So those chaps making Nazi saultes, chanting "blood and soil", wearing swastikas and so on---what would you call them exactly?
If you want a good argument about it, I suggest you try arguing with this chap:
https://mobile.twitter.com/Har...
His take on it:
I guess I got confused when they gave the #Hitler salute and chanted "blood and soil" b/c it reminded me of who I fought in my youth.

Re:Bots
Yeah, Twitter has a bot policy.
https://help.twitter.com/en/ru...
Yeah but Twitter's biggest problem is also how to clamp down on abusive trolls. A former Twitter employee called the platform: "a honeypot for a**holes”, even Twitter's CEO started worrying about the a**hole factor when celebrities got fed up with the trolls and started abandoning Twitter. It seems to me this bot might be the answer to Twitter's problems rather than one of their problems even if they only used it to monitor the abusers more effectively. They should be sending these people joboffers instead of ban notices.

Bots
Yeah, Twitter has a bot policy.

If Obama wants Trump to shut it on Social Media...
.. he should simply tell his media fanboys/lackeys to actually report the news, instead of hiding in bushes, taking pictures of a man on Christmas break (https://twitter.com/mkraju/status/945787636756738051 - Manu Raju, Senior "Correspondent" AKA Gossiper in Chief)
Maybe then we'd know that :
- Tax bill is NOT a tax cut for the rich (the people who are facing taxe increases are 6 figure earners with homes in high tax states like New York and California, everyone else is seeing a cut)
- Businesses are responding well to the tax cuts, with already announces for bonuses and salary increases to employees
- That the job market is booming and businesses are responding well to the Trump administration cut on Regulations
- The Dow record breaking performance in Trump's first year, each being fueled by the Administration's announcements of changes in policy
- That no, you don't get to keep your doctor, and that Obamacare deductibles are a scam, and that fining people for not getting healthcare they can't afford was a big mistake
- That yes, the Travel Ban is ACTUALLY LAW.
- That moving the embassy to Jerusalem was a bi-partisan decision, voted 90% in favor by the house and congress, and not "Trump's idea".
- That the Russian Dossier is considered a sham, and that this sham of a piece of fanfiction was used in a FISA court to obtain a warrant for the sitting administration in 2016 to spy on a political campaign.
- That yes, the Mueller probe is Partisan to the core and that it should be scrutinized, especially since it's who foundation is previously mentionned sham dossier
- That the FBI has been politicized under the previous administration. And the list goes on and on and on. The media are simply not reporting the news anymore. They have a single purpose and that is to push the #Resist bullcrap and Democrat Party agenda, rather than report the actual facts.
On btw, yes, ISIS has been defeated. Took 11 months. Sure he promised 1. Still better than the previous administrations did on that front.

Re:Huh?
Absent new law that grants the FCC the appropriate powers, Title II classification is what gave the FCC the power to mandate net neutrality.
As for why net neutrality is important, one only needs to look at the situation in Portugal: https://twitter.com/RoKhanna/s...
"Last mile" service to homes (and businesses) should be no different for Internet access than it is for telephone access. Without Title II, AT&T, for example, could charge extra for its customers to place or receive telephone calls to or from, for example, Verizon. Or AT&T could even only allow calls between AT&T customers, which would require businesses to be customers of both AT&T and Verizon (and, probably several other phone companies).
Likewise, without Title II (or other law), Comcast, for example, could charge its customers extra to access services provided by customers of other ISPs. Or require those services to be Comcast customers.
Also, note that Comcast owns NBC and Universal Studios, so is not just an Internet Service Provider. It is also a content provider. Therefore, it has a vested interest in promoting content from NBC and Universal and demoting content from other content providers.
