To learn more about this work and to develop the background that would satisfy your curiosity, I suggest taking the time to do some research, e.g. by checking out the websites for the principles involved in this project. There's also some excellent cosmological primers available on the web that go over some of this stuff; see e.g. Ned Wright's cosmology tutorial (here and especially here) as well as Wayne Hu's Introduction to the Cosmic Microwave Background.
To go through your concerns one by one:
1. The U.S., in concert with other nations, already maintains an extensive set of scientific facilities in Antarctica, in the form of permanent bases at the South Pole and at McMurdo Sound and Palmer Station. These facilities are manned and operated year-round. Their purpose is to provide logistical support for the scores of short- and long-term scientific projects that take place in Antarctica, such as the one described in this article. In other words, the issue of logistical support for such a project in Antarctica really isn't an issue; an entire organizational/logistical apparatus has been running for many years to provide this capability for science as a whole, and they'll only be one of many projects each year that will take advantage of it.
2. There is already a significant amount of observational evidence for the presence of what's referred to here as "dark energy." One hint of the presence of such an energy component to the Universe comes from trying to reconcile two observations: the first is that cosmic microwave background data indicates that the large-scale geometry of space is flat; the second is that the matter density of the universe (both in baryons, or normal matter, and in unknown dark matter, not to be confused with "dark energy"), measured via a broad variety of techniques, can only provide about 20% of the mass-energy density required to make the large-scale geometry be as flat as is observed. What's the other 80%? If it can't be matter of some sort, then what is it? When this is combined with recent observations that the expansion of the universe is accelerating -- something only possible if such a "dark energy" component to the mass-energy density of the universe is present -- one is forced to take this possibility seriously. (there's a lot more to be said about this issue, but only if someone cares)
3. The telescope will not solely look at one spot on the sky.
4. Lighting is not really an issue; this is not a visible light telescope, but rather a microwave telescope. There are significant noise issues that will have to be confronted in the data analysis, but not really from day vs. night problems.

Speed of light
is given by sqrt(permittivity * permeability). If they're both negative, the negative signs cancel. I think what people are trying to say is that if the index of refraction drops below 1, then the speed of light will be faster than in a vacuum. Although this has been demonstrated in optical fibers in areas of anomalous dispersion , this article is not talking about that...

The Big Guns at SIGGRAPH
SIGGRAPH exhibits closed on Thursday evening, but here are some of the biggest highlights:
SGI annouced their Infinite Reality 4 option for the Onyx series... comes standard with 1gbyte of texture ram and 2.5gbyte of buffer, expandable to 10gbyte of buffer for a total of 11gbyte of onboard gfx ram. Up to 16 IR4 subsystems can be installed in a single machine. Each subsystem can drive up to 8 monitors... or all subsystems can run in parallel for greater performance. The Virtual LA Urban Simulation project demoed part of their 3D LA using IR4 and the older IR3. They currently have over 1TB of texture and geometry data from Los Angeles, mostly in downtown areas... though they have 20,000 square miles mapped out, 4,000 of which are quite detailed.
Sun was showing off their XVR-4000 gfx option, a cardset that uses the IPA slot found in most Ultra-series machines. It has about 8x the geometry performance of IR3 and about 50% of the fill performance of IR4... for a fraction of the cost. 1gbyte of texture and 144mbyte of buffer. Different market targets, but interesting none the less. -

The links on the side mostly go to other UCLA departments. Altough, they do have some interesting looking demo units available. They don't seem to pack much of a punch, though

Right now I'm doing research in very high precision time synchronization for very large numbers of very small things. My lab does work in sensor networks -- get a tiny little computer with a few sensors and a radio, sprinkle thousands of them out over a building or a battlefield or a forest. Have the network tell you where the fire started, where the enemy is lurking, which light bulb needs to be replaced, or a thousand other things.
You need very time sync to do lots of this stuff -- to track motion, for example. Our current testbed times the flight of sound to tell how far apart things are, and for that we need accuracy on the order of 10 microseconds between clocks.
My research right now centers around a new time sync scheme, called Reference Broadcast Synchronization, which in a recent study I showed is almost an order of magnitude more precise than NTP under the same conditions -- 5 microseconds between a group of nodes with a userspace implementation, and down to 1 microsecond in the in-kernel implementation (which is the resolution of the clock! I'll do better when I have a clock that ticks more than once a microsecond.)
NTP, even under "optimal" conditions -- very high query rate to a stratum 1 GPS-steered clock in our lab--- did no better than 50 microseconds. When we introduced high levels of congestion on the network, NTP degraded by a factor of 30 while RBS was almost unchanged.
Of course, NTP is still a fantastic protocol, and much better than trying to apply RBS to the Internet (which is basically impossible). But for tiny nodes that need very tight time sync, I say, we can do better :-).

Re:Let's not be too hasty
It is as you said that there are claims i) known to be true ii) known to be false iii) known to be not provable true or false (altough these might be true or false) and also finally claims iv) for which we do not know yet to which of the first three categories the claim would belong to. However to my understanding Gödel's theorem is not at least directly connected algorithmic theory (abstract machines etc).
Saddly I'm not an expert on Turing machines or AI theory (as considering whether a machine can be built to mimick human mind; I can only believe that this might be possible, but however not in the foreseeable future). BTW: a mathematician called Yiannis Moschovakis has proposed an alternative for the abstract machine approach (Mathematics Unlimited 2001).

Write a cross-compiler?
Admittedly I know very little about 4GL, but I was wondering if anyone could comment on the possibility of generating a parser/compiler for the language in Java, perhaps using a tool such as JavaCC? There seems to be quite a set of grammars already available (not 4GL, but many other languages/file formats) for use as a starting point.

In summary the Koran is in need of some tweaking, and the Imams' biased teaching of it in corrupt gulf dictatorships desperately needs a complete overhaul. Religions were created to unite the tribes, today's multicultural (in the west) world hadn't been anticipated. Islam scales very badly compared to other religions, especially when some Imams have special agendas on creating hatred to cover up their paedophilia.In my book the people that pick up the Koran and say "Hey this is cool, there's some profound stuff in here" are okay, if they accept the minor tweaks by tacitly eating pork or drinking alcohol but if their country of origin is a Pakistani madrasa then he has the culture built not around the Koran but around other crap (see above) ingrained in him, the type of guy that believes he's the second coming or something. If your Muslim friends refuse to denounce AL-HEDAYA Vol. II (Hanafi Manual) then they must kill people that don't pay the Jizyah as these people are no longer entitled to protection in an Islamic state.
However just as the mafia doesn't represent every Italian, extremists don't represent Koranic Islam, they represent a very warped Islam (Pakistan madrasa edition) which I say is unreservedly evil. Many say that Islam is spreading, but here's the secret - it's not Koranic Islam that's spreading.

Harsh criticism of GouldIt is customary not to speak ill of the dead, but it may be helpful to see some balance to the high praises of Gould being sung here.
A letter in the New York Review of Books by two researchers at the UCSB Center for Evolutionary Psychology begins:
John Maynard Smith, one of the world's leading evolutionary biologists, recently summarized in the NYRB the sharply conflicting assessments of Stephen Jay Gould: "Because of the excellence of his essays, he has come to be seen by non-biologists as the preeminent evolutionary theorist. In contrast, the evolutionary biologists with whom I have discussed his work tend to see him as a man whose ideas are so confused as to be hardly worth bothering with, but as one who should not be publicly criticized because he is at least on our side against the creationists." (NYRB, Nov. 30th 1995, p. 46). No one can take any pleasure in the evident pain Gould is experiencing now that his actual standing within the community of professional evolutionary biologists is finally becoming more widely known. If what was a stake was solely one man's self-regard, common decency would preclude comment.
But as Maynard Smith points out, more is at stake. Gould "is giving non-biologists a largely false picture of the state of evolutionary theory" -- or as Ernst Mayr says of Gould and his small group of allies -- they "quite conspicuously misrepresent the views of [biology's] leading spokesmen."[1] Indeed, although Gould characterizes his critics as "anonymous" and "a tiny coterie," nearly every major evolutionary biologist of our era has weighed in in a vain attempt to correct the tangle of confusions that the higher profile Gould has inundated the intellectual world with.[2] The point is not that Gould is the object of some criticism -- so properly are we all -- it is that his reputation as a credible and balanced authority about evolutionary biology is non-existent among those who are in a professional position to know.
And goes on to close,
Now, given the foregoing, one is left with the puzzle of why Gould so customarily reverses the truth in his writing. We suggest that the best way to grasp the nature of Gould's writings is to recognize them as one of the most formidable bodies of fiction to be produced in recent American letters. Gould brilliantly works a number of literary devices to construct a fictional "Gould" as the protagonist of his essays and to construct a world of "evolutionary biology" every bit as imaginary and plausible as Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. Most of the elements of Gould's writing make no sense if they are interpreted as an honest attempt to communicate about science (e.g., why would he characterize so many researchers as saying the opposite of what they actually do) but come sharply into focus when understood as necessary components of a world constructed for the fictional "Gould" to have heroic fantasy adventures in -- adventures during which the admirable character of "Gould" can be slowly revealed.
In the course of these engaging tales, Gould the author introduces us to a gallery of vivid villains and ethnicities, such as "adaptationists," "Dawkins" and the soulless "hyperreductionists" with their vivisectionist appetites, "Wilson" and the sinister "sociobiologists", "biological determinists," and most recently, the holy-rolling "Darwinian fundamentalists," including "Maynard Smith" with his "simplistic dogmatism," "Dennett," "evolutionary psychologists," and "Robert Wright." "Gould" the protagonist is a much loved character (and not just in our household) who reveals himself to be learned, subtle, open-minded, tolerant, funny, gracious to his opponents, a tireless adversary of cultural prejudice, able to swim upstream against popular opinion with unflinching moral courage, able to pierce the surface appearances that capture others, and indeed to be not only the most brilliant innovator in biology since Darwin, but more importantly to be the voice of humane reason against the forces of ignorance, passion, incuriousity, and injustice. The author Gould, not least because he labors to beguile his audience into confusing his fictional targets with actual people and fields, is sadly none of these things.
Anyone in Gould's position is bound to attract criticism, but lay people may not be aware of the tremendous divisions within the evolutionary community which produced such negative responses to Gould.

Background reading.For those of you who doubt my sincerity or sanity, here are some threads that lead to an awful Orwellian world. Wonderful new technology which provides tremendous improvements in comunications and publication and could greatly enhance privacy is being thwarted and perverted by unAmerican laws and greedy corporate interests:
The cameras and microphones are on. Your correspondence will be violated by your government, as will your phone calls without judicial supervision. Your XP EULA gives Microsoft rights to search all of your documents. Recent legislation gives the governemnt unprecedented ability to collect computer records, most damningly they lay claim to all computer records collected by the above mentioned spyware.
Senator Holling's bill, obsensibly to "protect" music and movie publishers, is the final piece of the above puzzle. It gives government the ability to make good on their claims correspondence and information that might otherwise get away from them. It is the ring that binds all of the above and places control firmly in the hands of those who create and approve of the "security" software.
In a fourth amendment framework, you will NOT be secure in your home and personal effects. The government is able to search said effects WITHOUT reasonable cause presented before witnesses in a court of law.
Under such a coercive environment people will obviously NOT be able to say what they think and free speech is lost. Senator Holling's bill has the potential to further that goal by installing censor ware on all digital devices. Why not? Protect music today, public decency and order tomorrow. A little optical character recognition software is all it would take to apply this to photocopiers and other devices in the future. All other rights are lost when the first amendment is thus destroyed.
You can't do this kind of thing to an educated population, so propaganda is pouring forth to reduce privacy expectations of an increasingly ignorant population. Particularly sinister is the notion that somehow digital comunications are insecure and will be monitored. Beyond that, knowledge itself is under attack. What better place to censor things than the local library? Publishers hate libraries too these days. According to the last article, sharing information without paying is a violation of copyright, even reading the book out loud. If you have enough money to buy your own books, you are still out of luck as copyrith law treatens your ability to use your books when and how you please. What, you think publishers will continue the vastly expensive practice of printing on paper? The MPAA has shown them the way to pay per play and shifting formats will insure that you won't be able to access the work later anyway even if you are a very clever lawbreaker. Is that dumb enough for you? I don't need to prove the well known continued decline of national test performance or the lessing expectations of privacy that have been foist on us by the regulated public shcools. It's working!
Whew! That's a lot of reading, but you have to admit that it encompasses much more than pop music, "Plannet of the Apes" and other disposable entertainments. The pieces of the puzzle are all there. We can see where it's going and what's driving it without understanding programing concepts. Just imagine your paper books, TV, and pencil behaved as your DVDs, digiCam and word processor do. Then imagine it getting much worse.
When it all get's too much for you, just comfort yourself with the somewhat archaic, and disregarded text of the Bill of Rights. You don't think I'm sitting here at three AM becuse I don't have anything better to do, do you? I'm doing this because I love my country. OK, I am insane and I can't think of anything better to do.

Artistic photographs
I just finished writing to cdli@ucla.edu about the photos. Artistically they are very good. For use in a computer program to help put the pieces back together (Yeah! I know! They aren't just one big puzzle but are a lot of small puzzles.) they are not so good. The problem is that the pictures are artistic in nature. Only a single light source was used which means that some of the edges of the tablet pieces can't be easily determined. What should have been done is to have a light source at the top, bottom, left, and right sides of the pictures so the entire tablet piece is shown clearly. The black background makes a good offset to each piece because the pieces are definitely a different color than the black background. As it is, the pictures are nice to look at but would be hard to use in a puzzle program IMHO.

I never grokked why this stay-up-for-hours mentality became such a powerful meme with college students. I *always* did better by getting a reasonable amount of sleep than by staying up to cram. Give yourself a few extra days lead time for in-depth studying. Get proper sleep sleep for the period just before and during exams. Watch your performance soar.
There have been several important studies which show the importance of sleep on learning. If you want to do better on tests, get enough sleep.

But just passing mention of DOS attacks - these are boring to academics because they are easy to do and impossible to counter so there's no research to do and no papers to write.
You should take a look at Peter Reiher's work (UCLA). Namely a project on detecting DDoS attacks by observing traffic at routers near the source of the attack (sponsored by DARPA) and another project allowing routers to filter IP packets with spoofed source addresses (sponsored by the NSF). -

Links to other work on wireless adhoc networks
There are many other research programs, both academic and industrial, on wireless ad hoc networks, going back at least to the 1978 DARPA-sponsored Distributed Sensor Nets Workshop at Carnegie-Mellon University. Most of the work has been funded by DARPA, by the low-power wireless integrated microsensors (LWIM) project of the mid-1990s and now by the SensIT project. (Their projects page lists more than 25 academic research programs on these networks, complete with links.)
The University of California at Los Angeles, often working in collaboration with the Rockwell Science Center, has had a Wireless Integrated Network Sensors (WINS) project since 1993. UCLA also supports the similar-but-different "Smart Dust" program, which also employs ultra-low-power networking, but uses optical communication between network nodes.
Professor Anantha Chandrakasan at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the Principal Investigator of the uAMPS (microAMPS) project.
On the commercial side, these networks are being developed by Ember, graviton, Wherenet, and Motorola, just to name a few.
The ZigBee industry consortium is the marketing and compliance arm of the IEEE 802.15.4 draft standard, in a relationship similar to that between WECA (with the "Wi-Fi" brand) and IEEE 802.11b. This draft standard for ultra-low-power, ultra-low-cost wireless networking, now under development, should be finished this winter.

Large portions of the book are devoted to showing that historically "good" periods of growth and discovery took place while it was thought that the Universe was infinite. Well, so what? Believing doesn't make it so. This entire part of the book is irrelevent.
The evidence in favor of his theory seems mainly that electromagnetic clouds look very similar to galaxies. This is interesting, but hardly conclusive. He also doesn't give any alternative explanation for Hubble shift or a good answer to the question "Why is the sky dark?" A good overview of the debate is here. -

If they make a ton of these, what's that going to mean for our supply of Terfenol? I'm not an environmentalist or anything, but I'm sure people won't be happy.
Here is a cool article and picture on Terfenol. Looks like its main purpose is for damping and energy absorption. Kind of looks like gold!

On December 16, 1997, President Clinton signed HR 2265 -- the 'No Electronic Theft' Act -- into law. The act, sponsored by Representative Goodlatte (R-Virginia), was passed in the House on 11/4/97 and in the Senate on 11/13/97.

The problem I can see right now is that we don't know how the presence or absence of a gene can effect other things in a given pathway. For example, the gene in mice that's responsible for aging also resonsible for cancer resistance. This is a well known problem that is only now being able to be explored in prokaryotes.

Very Competitive
Well I am a junior math major at a not so pristegious university and I would say that I am in the same boat. I posted a topic similar to this on the alt.math newsgroup and I got about 50/50 = "go for it" / "Stick w/ computers and keep math as a hobby"
If I were you I would take a few more classes until I make a lifelong commitment. Math is one of those subjects where the upper division work differs greatly from most of what you see in ugrad/hs.If that hasn't scared you enough then try the AMS Job Search just to see what type of positions seem to be open in your state.
Also (although you seem quite gung ho about theoretical research) keep your mind open about other subjects for your graduate degree. Bioinformatics departments seem to want mathematicians at least here at UCLA. Not to mention if you read in last months issue of AMS's "Notices" (would link but unless you are behind a a school's firewall you can't view it) they have an article about the shortage of Phd's in Math Ed. (which is more cognitive science than math). So, I know where you are comming from. Pure Mathematics is quite a leap of faith but it's one that I am {smart|stupid} enough to take. -
Saw his demo last monthDr. Faloutsos gave a colloquium talk to the CS department at my college recently, including a dozen or so simple examples of his DANCE system. It was really very impressive.
Faloutsos' work is not actually focused on the physics models, but on the control programs for the virtual actors. This allows dynamic, force-based animation (as opposed to kinematic, position-based animation). Each model has a set of controllers for various tasks like walking, running, jumping forward, moving from a prone position to a standing position, etc. Each controller knows its "competencies" -- the conditions under which it can successfully guide the model. These are used to hand off control from one controller to the next as the model goes through a complex motion or reacts to external forces.
The sample movies that Faloutsos showed were mostly unscripted. They would start with a model in a simple standing state, which would then respond to user-controlled forces like pushing or throwing simulated balls at the model from various angles. Various balance-recovery controllers would take over depending on how the model was displaced; if none of them were succesful then the model would fall down, and then use one of its controllers for returning to a standing position. All of this appeared incredibly realistic and human.
Also, as another poster noted, DANCE is available under a "free for non-commercial use" license (not free under the FSF or Debian definitions, but a good deal in my opinion). He encouraged us to try it out, explaining that research like his has suffered from a lack of common infrastructure, leading to a lot of reinvented wheels. He expressed hope that the DANCE framework would allow more innovative research with less duplicated work.

Worse, by far, than pumping the environment full of mutants is spreading existing, organisms already adapted to their local ecosystems willy-nilly around the globe into other ecosystems in the name of "global diversity" and then allowing the verbal ones to grab control of the most advanced military in the world screaming "genes don't matter" over the din of bombing raids "to prevent ethnic cleansing".

By "reaches budget" I assume that you refer to a reduction in the price of a genuine copy of a game as demand falls off. How are you sure that a particular game will reach budget within the next few years? It won't if it's recalled and destroyed, sending the price upwards of $200 per genuine copy. This happened with a popular game called Tetyais, an independent Tetris clone for NES by Tengen that supported side-by-side simultaneous play. To learn more about the incident, start at Google. (The letter says 'ya' in Russian.) It also happened with several Super NES role-playing games by Squaresoft, but not because of any lawsuits.

I'm not sure the strict numbers back this up
I'm a biologist, but I also have a degree in comp stat, by the way.
I'd like to see (and I have not) numbers comparing heavy net users with the rest of the population in terms of civic involvement, do you vote, and so forth. Now, of course, heavy net use corrolates with wealth, and wealth corrolates with voting, showering on a daily basis, going to church, not being addicted to drugs, etc. etc. However, with a large enough sample to control for that, I'd like to see how heavy net users measure up.
If heavy net users vote more often and are more likely to be members of community organisations - and I don't pretend the know whether or not that is true - that pretty much kills Jon's argument. You can argue that they voted even more and were in even more community associations before the net became popular, but that is pretty weak.
I also want to see how net use affects your social life, dependent on age. To a certain extent, people in our age bracket (20-somethings; I have a university address b/c I'm a grad student. IANA Teenager!) use the net heavily because we are nerds. Not joiners, I might say. That's more true of people ten years older than I am, and less true of my little brother's generation.
Remember the UCLA 2001 Internet Census? We had a story about it back in early december; and it is worth a second read if you're interested in this topic. In particular, scroll past all the marketing bullcrap down to page 55. Buried in the middle of the document you find a lot of fascinating stuff about how people feel the Internet impacts their social lives - positively, if not overwhelmingly so.
On page 59 is the most interesting single result in the whole report. People around the age of 17 are about 33% likely to say that it is easier to meet people online than in person (compared to about 10% of older people.) That is a strange, and a little bit disturbing, trend, but it points to increasing socialisation on the net, whatever you may think of p2p and filterware. -

UCLA had this in 1985
When I was taking programming classes in the mid '80s at UCLA, they had a rather clever cheating detection program. It didn't look at the source (Pascal or C) code, but rather at the produced assembler code to see if students were copying others' algorithms.
So you might obfuscate your copied code by moving it around, changing variable names, etc. but it would still catch you.
