An Elder Scrolls Retrospective
With the release of the fourth chapter in the Elder Scrolls saga last week, UGO has put together a piece looking back on the long and successful history of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series. From the article: "Some RPGs take the restricted world premise so far that they are practically on rails. Thankfully, the team at Bethesda Softworks decided back in 1994 that that wasn't the way things would be for their series The Elder Scrolls. Now at its fourth installment, we have decided it was about time to take a look back at the series that broke the mold on what an RPG should be and that gave players the most important ability of all - the ability to choose how to play the game. So ready your horse, grab your finest set of gauntlets, and prepare to embark on a journey through the history of the series that brought the amazing world of Tamirel to life, and don't be afraid to slay an orc or two in the process." -
Grand Theft Auto Retrospective
Sadkey writes "In light of the release of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PSP, UGO has posted a retrospective around the GTA games. "Come take a trip through time, and see how a franchise went from a cult hit to a cultural phenomenon, set the tone for an entire generation, and made open-ended gameplay a buzzword of the early 21st century. It's a long, bumpy ride, but at the end, Grand Theft Auto stands tall as the game that changed everything.' ." I remember playing the top down GTAs and just loving it. Great games. -

Top 50 DVDs
Muftakkabe327 writes "TheForce.net points to UGO's Top 50 DVDs feature where Star Wars makes a healthy appearance at #11. Whether that's high enough to keep fans from rioting remains to be seen. Other nerd-friendly fare on the list include Evil Dead, Lord of the Rings, Ghostbusters, Akira, Dawn of the Dead, Freaks & Geeks and Led Zeppelin. " -

History of Star Wars Video Games
Leafel writes "UGO has posted a feature on the history of Star Wars video games, dividing the timeline into 4 categories: The Golden Age (up to 1990), The Silver Age (1991-1996), The Gaming Renaissance (1996-2000), Modern Age (2001 on). From the article 'December 2004 saw the latest release in a long line of Star Wars related video games. As a sequel to one of 2003's top role playing games, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords has made a lot of Xbox owners and RPG fans very happy. In honor of KOTOR II's release and in anticipation of May's Revenge of the Sith movie event, we take a look at the long history of interactive Star Wars entertainment, complete with all of its highs and lows.'" -
A Brief History of Contra
downwithlove writes "Seems most of the sites out there are not digging Neo Contra. I actually think it's better than Shattered Soldier, that one being ridiculously hard. I caught this History of Contra feature on UGO that briefly outlines the progression of the series from Arcade to Next-Gen system. Good for those looking to remember their first NES romp, before the three-dimensional polygonse." -
A Negative Review of Halo 2
KaiEl writes "An avalanche of glowing reviews has already made Halo 2 the second-highest ranked game of all time on GameRankings.com. Looking for an alternative viewpoint? The Video Game Ombudsman has gathered the bad points from nine separate Halo 2 reviews into the only negative review of Halo 2 you're ever likely to read. Useful as a cautionary tale about out-of-context quoting and as a reference manual for rampant Microsoft haters who might want to make the Halo 2 argument a little less one-sided." -
Star Wars Galaxies Jump to Lightspeed Reviewed
UGO is running a feature on Star Wars Galaxies, a week after the launch of Jump to Lightspeed. They have reviews of the expansion both from a veteran player and from a new player to the game. From the Vet: "Jump to Lightspeed is a dream come true for many loyal SWG players that have been itching for a new reason to dust off that old flight stick or buy a new one." From the Newb: "As time went on, the bloom started to come off the rose, for a number of reasons." If you've been considering getting your dogfight on, give them a look. -

Broadband Bits
rtphokie writes "In an article covering bringing wireless and high speed internet connectivity several rural counties near Fredericksburg, VA, a county commissioner comments that transportation issues were once considered the top issue in economic development discussion, now it's the lack of high-speed Internet." Reader Darmok0685 writes "UGO has an interesting feature that explores the future of broadband, with in-depth sections that explore such technologies as Broadband Over Power Lines, WiMax, Fiber to the Home, Stratellite, and ADSL2/ADSL2+. It delves into the pros and cons, as well as giving backgrounds on each." -
Gearbox, UbiSoft Confirms Brothers In Arms
An anonymous reader writers: "On Blue's News, there's the official announcement of Gearbox's Brothers in Arms, a tactical WWII shooter with first-person action but the ability to 'command elements, which are your fellow squad members', to be published by UbiSoft, initially for Xbox and PC later this year (though 'PS2 and Gamecube [versions] will follow in 2005'). This was the Gearbox title rumored under a different name earlier this week. But better yet, UGO has the first in-depth preview with screenshots of the game. Looks sharp, sounds like it plays sharp, but we'll see - WWII games are a dime a dozen, but they seem to be getting better in quality recently." -
George Lucas DVD Audio Commentary Leaked
Lucasfan04 writes "Apparently a few clips leaked out from the upcoming Star Wars Trilogy DVD. They're from George Lucas' audio commentary, and you can hear him talking about the films. Five 3-minute or so clips are featured." -
The Toy Fair's Top 10 Strangest Products
FloggingMollyrox writes "UGO looks at the recent 2004 Toy Fair's Top 10 Strangest Products. Forget about Lord of the Rings and Spider-Man, the real stuff was an art farm that grows vegetables, a pogo stick that shoots you over the moon, 'real' shrunken heads, and an educational plush toy based on an alien invasion." -
Lucky XIII Wins ECTS Game Awards
Thanks to Gamesindustry.biz for their report on the results of the annual ECTS Awards in London, documenting the ceremonies based around the E3-like English trade show. According to the piece, "Ubi Soft's cel-shaded FPS title XIII... [walked] away from the ceremony with the Best Console Game and Game of Show awards tucked under its arm. The company's multiplayer FPS title Far Cry also won the Best PC Game award, while Everquest 2 - published in Europe by Ubi - picked up the Best Online game award." Interestingly, the Edge Award, chosen by editors of the boutique UK games magazine, went to Capcom's Viewtiful Joe, while Half-Life 2 only came away with one prize, the London Games Week award. -
Driver 3 Aims For Filmed Car Chase Nirvana
Thanks to UGO.com for their interview with Martin Edmondson about Atari's Driver 3, the PlayStation 2 driving sequel due in early 2004. He explains the point of the game: "Driver was always about the most realistic car chases possible on a computer or console and Driver 3 is very much true to that... So you can set up your car chases and then have all the cameras positioned as you choose... it should look like a car chase movie, and that's the whole point behind Driver." But the developers of the previous Driver titles and Stuntman shy away from certain comparisons: "The thing is, we're not trying to do Vice City. Driver actually started the whole city, car-chase environment, so it'd be a big mistake to say, 'Let's do [all the GTA features], instead.'" -
True Crime - Streets Of L.A. Ratchets Up The Vice
Thanks to C+VG for their interview with the producer of Activision's True Crime: Streets of L.A., the Luxoflux-developed, rather Grand Theft Auto-esque game that's due out for multiple consoles this November. The game is pitched as "...an extension of the genre... We have the cinematic flair of The Getaway with the freedom to explore like in GTA." The idea of an open-ended experience is also pushed: "...as you get into the game, you don't have to repeat a mission you get stuck on, you can carry on playing through the game, which gives you more of an ability to play through - you can always go back and try that mission again later." There's another recent preview over at UGO.com for the game, which vies with The Simpsons: Hit And Run as the only GTA-styled games out this Christmas. -
Raph Koster On Star Wars Galaxies
Thanks to UGO.com for their interview with Raph Koster, creative director of Star Wars Galaxies, discussing the launch period for the much-discussed PC MMORPG. He suggests that: "The launch was a little rockier than we'd like, so we've tried to be really proactive.... We're making a real concerted effort to constantly improve the game", and talks about new features: "Another big thing that's going in is gambling. So we're working up to Sabbac [the game in which Han Solo wins the Millenium Falcon from Lando]... We're gonna be adding slot machines and roulette." Also touched on are the mission diversity complaints: "The missions were never intended to be rich and complex and deep... they're intended to only take a little while, not be incredibly complex. But, of course, players have found them to be a great way of making money." -
Deus Ex - Invisible War Probed
Thanks to UGO.com for their hands-on preview of Ion Storm's Deus Ex:Invisible War, the forthcoming sequel to the much-acclaimed FPS/RPG hybrid. The feature starts: "Few RPGs have offered the level of open-ended gameplay, the Hollywood-quality back story, or the innovative character development that Deus Ex did", and goes on to describe the changes to the sequel, which include a "simplifying [of] its character-development system" and a new interface that's "similar to Metroid Prime's visor view" - in fact, "when a menu pops up, it'll be emblazoned directly on [the new lead character] Alex's eye." The game is currently due out this December for both PC and Xbox. -
Temple Of Elemental Evil Discussed
An anonymous reader writes "Just writing to let you guys know that UGO has an interview with Tim Cain, co-founder of Troika Games (makers of Arcanum), talking about their latest game, Dungeons And Dragons: The Temple of Elemental Evil. The game appears to be based off the popular D+D module of the same name. Cain is best known for his work on the fantastic Fallout games from Interplay." -
Underworld Trailer
Scoop writes "Just wanted to let everyone know that UGO is exclusively hosting the trailer for Underworld, an action movie set in a world where werewolves and vampires exist, and are at war. Pretty cool stuff, check it out." -

Extra Scenes in FotR Special Edition DVD
gdr writes "Lights Out Entertainment have an article on the extra scenes that will be in the Fellowship of the Ring special edition DVD. It will be nice to have the relationship between elves and dwarves fleshed out a bit. I'm not sure the final battle scene really needs to be any longer." There are quite a few bits mentioned for the extra 30 minutes of footage that I'm looking forward to seeing. Just be careful to buy the November 12 release and not the august release if you want the extra mojo. I'll be waiting. -

Tribute to Nien Nunb and other Star Wars Bit Parts
Nien Nunb writes "This Star Wars feature tries to give the little guys a leg up, like the aforementioned Nien Nunb, who only shows up for one action sequence, but he was copilot of the ship that destroyed the second Death Star. Star Wars is full of forgotten faces like his and you can see all their wretchedness here." -

Is Video Game TV Closer That You Think?
Gamer Bitch X writes "Someone's trying to launch a gaming news channel (G4) and someone else is there to chat 'em up. From an interview at UGO where they ask if G4 were to feature a McLaughlin Group-style show, who would be your ideal panel and host?" CEO from G4: "Shigeru Miyamoto, Alexey Pajitnov, Chun Li, Will Wright and Max Payne , hosted by Bart Simpson (I still love him from my Fox Network days)." Okay, I take it back. If the above were true, I'd watch this in a heartbeat!" Riiight. I wouldn't mind seeing a few real shows about video games, but I'd want it hosted by Old Man Murray. It'd be nice just to quickly see video clips, but somehow I doubt that it could be done with integrity. I imagine a video game network being more like an infomercial channel, and well, yuck. -

An Interview with JRR Tolkien and Other Tomfoolery
Lord of the Links writes: "These wackjobs pretend to interview JRR Tolkien with a ouija board as well as slapping together other nonsense, like photoshopped Ringwraiths from the movie doing bizarre things. I laughed once or twice, especially the diary by Gollum. The girls side left something to be desired, but the script revisions were kinda funny. If you feel like feeding into the Lord of the Rings hype, check it out."
