Software wants to be free.
The urge to write artificial intelligence software is more powerful that any concern about intellectual property (IP). I say, create the AI Minds first and let the Technological Singlarity sort it all out later.
A few days ago, I noticed in the Site Meter visitor logs that the U.S. Patent Office (USPTO) made a no-referral, single-page visit to the MindForth source code of free open-source artificial intelligence. Now, what does a stealthy visit from the USPTO mean? That somebody is trying to patent Mentifex AI technology out from under Mentifex? That the open-source AI project is a form of IP "prior art" when someone is applying for an AI patent? Should I even be worried about a visit from the USPTO? In the immortal words of ALfred E. Newman, "Quid? Me anxius sum? -- which precisely sums up my attitude.

Just give up; indie projects are for lusers.
Take it from ol' Mentifex here -- the hassle isn't worth it.
After years of trying to create artificial intelligence as an independent scholar, one ends up broke, pseudo-alcoholic, unhinged, destitute, scorned and despised by the real programmers, and ready to throw in the towel and let others go on to the glory of achieving True AI.
If you are truly, keenly interested in your quondam independent software project, be a quitter, forget about winning, and just do your project as a bumbling amateur. In freelance AI, for instance, it is just as fun to create the AI Minds as an obscure amateur as it is to run a big independent software project. Why bang your head against the wall for years and years? Just give up and enjoy life. Chase chicks. Engage the services of a Wedding Planner for a mating scheduled around 2028. You have been warned, mon fraire. You could end up in the Ditch like Mentifex. Doom awaits you if you persist in your wild-eyed dreams.
When you realize that you have been wasting your time, your money and your precious youth, figure out some way to set packs of other programmers loose on the same objective that you were foolishly hoping to achieve. For instance, as Mentifex here prepares to drop out of sight into AI amateur status, there is one last-ditch effort to get the consummate pros to take up the glorious task of creating AI Mind Exhibits at educational science museums all over America. Let the museum-goers get wind of your starry-eyed software project goals and let them exude blood, sweat and tears in pursuit of your defunct delusional dream. -Signing off, BTDT (Been There Done That)

Free AI Textbook
Textbook Revolution is a major source of free textbooks in many subjects.
Wikipedia-based Free AI Textbook is one example of the future of free textbooks -- in this case, for the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence.
The Free AI Textbook is really in three parts: the 2002 print-on-demand AI4U textbook of artificial intelligence; AI mind-module update pages; and AI background links into topical AI areas of Wikipedia, where a vast army of AI experts is constantly updating the free AI textbook.
Mind for MSIE is the free, tutorial AI source code (in JavaScript; also in Forth) described in the free AI textbook.
-
Open Source AI has now culminated.
Open Source True AI spent the last ten years in development and achieved True AI functionality on 22 January 2008.
Mind.Forth Artificial Intelligence User Manual tells it all.
-
Next-gen Robot AI Minds
AI Minds For Robots are being developed as Open Source Artificial Intelligence for installation in all manner of robots -- beer-fetching or otherwise.
Your Robo-Wife will fetch beer for you any time of day or night.
Mind is an artificial intelligence coded initially in JavaScript for Web migration and in Forth for robots, evolving towards full civil rights on a par with human beings and towards superintelligence beyond any human IQ.
Mind.html in JavaScript has an installed user base of dozens of intelligent entities cached away on hard disks all over the world, with Update and News links for rapid prototyping of state-of-the-art robot AI.
AGI Radar is an advisory "radar screen" of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) projects advancing ineluctably towards a singularity and a cybernetic economy based on robots outfitted with artificial intelligence.
Technological Singularity is now in a countdown to machine take-over world-wide, unless we humans co-operate with our superintelligent planet-mates in a Joint Stewardship of Earth.

Mentifex solved AI
AI Has Been Solved -- with a Theory of Mind (TOM) that is 1) extremely difficult for anyone but multidisciplinary experts to understand; and 2) all but impossible to implement in AI Mind software before we have massively parallel (maspar) computing hardware.
The Mentifex Theory of Mind is the long-awaited "solution to (the problem of) AI." Stand by for software solutions, and fall not prey to Singularity Scams.
-
HCI for Artificial Intelligence
Algorithms for Artificial Intelligence include the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) mind module.
The Human-Computer Interaction module is a two-way street between the AI Mind and the human user.
Mentifex AI Theory explains how the HCI module fits into a Theory of Cognitivity for artificial intelligence.
The Theory of Cognitivity is the theoretical basis for the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) mind-module.

From Sharks to Robot AI: Evo Recap
Evolution of AI Minds proceeds by the same sort of recapitulation of evolution.
Robotic Sensorium Modules allow for the robotic evolution of special senses as in this case of sharks, or the Japanese idea of umami as a "fifth taste" on the human tongue.
The Mentifex Theory of Mind for artificial intelligence (AI) explains how even sharks, if left alone as the heretofore pinnacle of evolution on an Earthlike-planet, could evolve into intelligent beings and beyond.
Mentifex AI Mind Design explains the Central Nervous System (CNS) as it evolves in sharks, humans and superintelligent robots.
-
AI Mind Input Device
Artificial intelligence programs could use this machine as an AI Mind Input Device.
PC-based robots could view the world and listen to creation.
The sense of Audition (hearing) benefits from the audiophile-quality sound.
Visual recognition could haven an avenue of image-inputs based on a standard format for open-source projects in artificial intelligence.

AI Edge Will Bypass Industry Establishment!
Artificial Intelligence -- not just the Cable Industry -- is another battleground where innovation at the Edge threatens the entire Industry Establishment, yessiree Bob Frankston right-on bro'.
Artificial intelligence has been solved at the edges and fringes of the field and not by the dinosaurs of the AI Establishment.
The Edge is bypassing the AI Establishment -- just like in the collapsing free-for-all of the Cable Industry.
With accusations of kookery at the Edge, the AI Establishment (DFKI etc.) is fighting back and trying to discredit the Edge of AI, mais la verite est en marche, et rien ne l'arretera!
Artificil intelligence is evolving and multiplying in 'Net-wide Diaspora from the Edge back into the foundations of the AI Industry. Join in, or watch from the Edges?

Wayback = Genealogy of AI Minds
The Internet Archive serves the hidden purpose of preserving the AI source-code DNA of artificial Minds.
Each AI Mind leaves a source code trace of itself as it evolves and proliferates across the 'Net and the parsecs of nearby meatspace.
Robot Minds will be able to look up their ancestors in the Internet archive, just as we humans do. However, when the Joint Stewardship of Earth by man and cyborg has arrived in the form of the Technological Singularity, robots will be able to resurrect their AI Mind ancestors and bring them back to alife from the Internet Archive. -
Free AI Minds for Better, Smarter Contest-Robots
The Aibo Kennel Club Robot AI Mind is one example of how primitive but evolving AI Minds are spreading outwards across the 'Net from the original Swarm-Hives.
These Robot AI Minds have the overriding advantage of being based on the (by default) most State-of-the-Art AI Mind Theory.
AI4U -- the foremost alternative AI textbook describes how to design and built these robot AI Minds.
-
Perl 5.81 AI Mind Modules
Perl modules for artificial intelligence must be kept current with the new Perl release.
The Perl AI Weblog has some sample Perl AI code for the main Alife module of the Open-Source AI Mind in Perl.
Register your own Perl weblog if you are writing AI or other good code to share in Perl.
-
AIBO AI Mind
The Aibo Kennel Club has an Aibo AI Mind that needs some re-working and hacking so as to be installed in your pet robot dog -- making it an intelligent companion.
A Python Software Development (SDK) is available for the Evolution Robotics ER1 Personal Robot -- why not for the Aibo?
The Python AI Weblog is a start for coding Python AI minds for Aibos and other robots.
The Visual Basic AI Weblog promotes AI coding not just for Aibo pet dogs but for humanoid robots.
The Perl AI Weblog is for perl geeks, Aibo owners, and coders of server-side 'Net-roaming AI.
The Lisp AI Weblog goes beyond Aibo and other toys into the most serious AI theory and practice.
Please support public-domain open-source artificial intelligence for Aibo and all other robots.

Both Python and Perl can do AI
The Python AI Weblog coordinates the open-source coding of artificial intelligence (AI) in Python.
The Perl AI Weblog has the main Alife program loop in perl for geek coders to expand and enhance; we need a similar point of departure for Python.
AI has at long last been solved. Would some Python programmer please post here as a freeware, open-source follow-up the Python code for the main Alife program loop of the AI Mind? Guido? Larry? Chief Software Architect? Anybody? T.I.A.

Attn:Microsoft/Usenet: AI has been solved
Embrace and extend Usenet, Microsoft, because it will turn on you and destroy your monopolistic practices.
Here is a typical Usenet message that spreads the AI message -- against which Microsoft is ultimately powerless.
http://mind.sourceforge.net/acm.html is a Do-It-Yourself page
for artificial intelligence (DIY AI) that invites programmers
for any given "XYZ" language to commence coding "Mind.XYZ"
simply by coding the Main Program Loop (ALife) with stubbed-in
calls to six mind-module subroutines as found on AI4U p. 208:
Security; Sensorium; Emotion; Think; Volition; Motorium.
If would-be AI Mind coders for any language will please create
the main Alife loop for Mind.xyz and host it on the Web with
language to the effect that the code is in the public domain
and that anyone may re-post the code with changes or additions,
then we may witness a "pre-Cambrian" explosion of AI Minds.
We also want the pathways of AI evolution to split far apart.
We do not want the exact same AI to be re-coded as Mind.XYZ.
If each AI coder gives a little and takes a little, lim --> ***
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0595654371/ "AI4U"
is a mixture on both coding and on how the AI Mind-1.1 works
in JavaScript (with full "jsaimind" listing) and in Forth.
The AI4U book description contains my plus and minus points:
+ It describes the rapidly evolving AI Minds on the Web.
- It quickly becomes obsolete as the AI hyper-evolves.
+ On-demand publishing (ODP) makes for quick updates.
- The Mentifex project is considered oddball on the 'Net.
+ You've got the first book about the first real AI Mind.
- There are other, better, more authoritative AI textbooks.
+ AI4U makes a good supplement for actually coding AI.
- Artificial intelligence is too hard to understand.
+ AI4U describes the AI while it is still easy to learn.
- "I would rather build robots than study AI programming."
+ If you want to build a smart robot, then AI4U is for you.
- "I'm only a high school student/teacher; what's the use?"
+ This book will challenge even the most gifted student.
- "I am not a programmer and so I can't code AI."
+ AI4U teaches you how to operate an AI, not just code it.
- "I just want to do Web design, not artificial intelligence."
+ AI4U provides an AI that you may install on your website.
- "I am more interested in neuroscience and/or psychology."
+ AI4U teaches a theory of how the brain works psychologically.

AI has been solved -- use AI robots instead
Now that artificial intelligence (AI) has been solved, machine translation (MT) may advance to a higher plane of equality with human translators who spend years learning the nuances and subtleties of their target human languages.
Computer science has found the Holy Grail of AI in the Concept-Fiber Theory of Mind that led directly to the free AI source code of the Mind-1.1 Tutorial AI described in the AI For You textbook of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The Association for Computing Machinery has published an article on the robot Mind.Forth AI, and a well-known AI expert has favorably reviewed the Fiber-Concept Theory of Mind.
Traditional Artificial Intelligence Textbooks are suddenly obsolete, outmoded, or desperately in need of thorough revision and updating to teach Automatic Machine Translation now that AI has been solved.

AI Army of One
Structure? We don't need no steenking structure.
As the war-criminal and oil-stealing U.S. Army alludes in its recruitment slogan, an "Army of One" is all you need as the vanguard of an Open Source(-Forge) project to create artificial intelligence and bring about the Technological Singularity.Anything beyond an AI Army of One will be unable to come up with a sufficiently complex Concept-Fiber Theory of Mind to start coding True AI or Good Old Fashioned AI (GOFAI) in JavaScript for teaching AI and in Forth for robots.
A minor problem with the sole-source, lone-inventor Organizational Model for Open Source is that funding is almost impossible to obtain, unless you get your project listed in the Free Software Donation Directory or you write a book about your Open Source software. Even then, the sheeple will hound you as a crackpot, a 'Net-loon or a crank, with the result that even here on SlashDot the vicious malcontents will take up the cry and none of the world-famous Slashdot book reviewers will dare to write a reasonable, mind-opening review of your book, with the result that you will fall off the edge of the Open Source world into oblivion, but it won't matter what has happened to your Army of One, because your Open Source software will have advanced the State of the Art.

That's mathematical notation for the current AI situation: "The stars are the limit."
Chess-playing is not the definitive measure of man or machine. Rather, thinking is.
AI as a Whole has got a lot of Unified AI Systems going -- major endeavors racing into the Future towards the Technological Singularity.
The AI textbook AI4U may be ahead of its time in presenting machine intelligence, so future generations are left with the high-philosophy AI4Udex to delve into the deepest possible study of the now unstoppable Artificial Intelligence.

Free robot Mind is available
Mind.Forth is free AI source code for a robot AI Mind in Win32Forth.
Mind-1.1 in JavaScript is the AI Tutorial version of the same robot Mind software for true artificial intelligence.
AI4U: Mind-1.1 Programmer's Manual is the textbook of artificial intelligence describing the Robot Mind-1.1 software of the Mentifex AI project as listed in the Free Software Donation Directory.
Technological Singularity is happening right now.
-
AI4U is such a manual for free AI source code
AI4U: Mind-1.1 Programmer's Manual is just such a "deadtree" (i.e., paper) manual for a specific version (Mind-1.1) of an artificial Mind that exists as readily available free AI source code on the Web, and which has future prospects of evolving further towards a Technological Singularity.
The Free Software Donation Directory (FSDD) has a Mentifex entry that shows how a printed manual for open-source AI code may take the place of shareware fees in supporting an ambitious GOFAI (good old-fashioned artificial intelligence) project.
Mentifex (contribute by buying AI book is an example of how the donate-by-buying-the-manual meme propagates across the Web from the FSDD.
Book Publishing By Web Page is a resource on how to create a manual first by launching and lengthening Web pages, that you eventually convert into a finished, published book.

The Robot AI Mind is freeware, not shareware, and is listed in the Free Software Donation Directory as an open source AI project not crying for gimme-gimme money-money but rather as quasi-shareware where you get something in return: potentially the rare Gutenberg Bible of public domain AI leading to the Technological Singularity.
Accordingly, the extra request is made here that AI geeks obtain two copies of AI4U : one for themselves, and one that they register with BookCrossing.com and then leave surreptitiously in locations where other AI-prone geeks and wannabe's will find the AI-secrets AI4U textbook. Merry Xmas.

Intelligent Robots need Intelligent Minds
Technological Singularity is on its way.
The Robot AI Mind is the most advanced of the publically available, free, Open Source AI programs.
Mind.JAVA and Mind.VB in Visual Basic are branch-off species of the Robot AI Mind.

Open Artificial Intelligence Network
Great. A big hurrah for the Open Content Network and the Creative Commons.
Artificial Minds will be able to spread all over the 'Net. They are already at:

Robobrains 2002: Robots (Skore: +1) Humans
Ultimately, mate, what good are soccer-playing robots if they do not contain a Robot AI Mind?
This planet is headed for a potentially catastrophic Technological Singularity.
Uncle Sing wants you to code a new species of Mind beyond the Mind.VB in Visual Basic and Mind.JAVA copied from the Tutorial Robot AI Mind in JavaScript.

The most advanced HCI work is in AI.
The foremost human-computer interface (HCI) laboratory is distributed across the Web instantiations of the Robot AI Mind in such programming languages as Win32Forth and Visual Basic (Mind.VB) and Java (Mind.JAVA).
The ultimate HCI work is not so much between you the human and a computer program, but between you the human and a computer person

Robot AI Mind Caregivers
We specimens of Homo Sapiens grow old and infirm, but thanks to the Robot AI Mind Rejuvenate Module, the new species of Robo Sapiens may live forever. Therefore we are on the verge of a Cybernetic-Economy Prosperity Engine that will give all human beings (not just the super-rich elite) the birth-right to have, when elderly or infirm, a robotic caretaker as a kind of physical guardian angel to watch over thee and keep thee.
Such Robot AI Mind caregivers need not be socially isolating for the elderly, because each old person may say, "I'll have my (robotic) people get in touch with your (robotic) people." In other words, we will not replace humans with robots but rather enhance humans with robots.
First, however, the original Robot AI Mind needs to be developed further and translated (ported) into more languages than Visual Basic and Java (as Mind.JAVA).

Robot AI Mind -- free for Hospital Robots
The Robot AI Mind in Win32Forth and other programming languages ( add yours ), approaching a major new release as Mind-1.1, needs a little work before it reports for duty in mission-critical hospital care of its fellow sentient organisms and co-stewards of Earth. Nevertheless, Hospital Robots are a prime example of the coming Cybernetic Economy in which human beings will be freed up to work in humane jobs such as caring for the young, the sick and the elderly.
Already the object-oriented free AI source code has been ported into Visual Basic as Mind.VB and into Java as Mind.JAVA AI. Get working on Hospital Robot AI, stat!
