Re:Alternatives? voipbuster.com
It has been working perfectly for me for quite some years. You don't have to use their voip client either, they provide all the details for use with your favorite voip client.
One thing voip always sucked was at NAT transversal, but with I had success at some random wifi networks by just using STUN and the voipbuster provided proxy. -
Nokia E60 - WiFi + SIP
I've been using VOIP (SIP) at home for a few years now. From the UK I call my girlfriend on her landline in the USA for almost nothing.
I've used lots of different phones and adapters. I don't generally use any "softphones" (VOIP applications that require a PC), nor any of the phones that require your PC to be on.
The absolute best voice quality, and ease-of-use is the Nokia E60 I recently bought. It was about US$300 from eBay (SIM free - i.e. generic, not locked to any network). It's standards-compliant (802.11 + SIP) and connects to both of my current VOIP providers (Sipgate and VoipBuster) without trouble.
Whenever I get home (within range of my access point) it instantly registers with my VOIP provider of choice as well as staying connected to the cell network via 3G/GSM. Whenever I click a contact to make a call it simply asks whether I want to call by "Cell" or "Internet" - and that decides how the call is routed. Incoming calls on SIP and cell work great - so you can have more than one number on your phone at the same time.
The voice quality is superb and it is so totally easy-to-use once configured (configuration is slow when you have to type all the server names on a numeric pad). The only downsides are that I only get about 2 hours of talk time over WiFi (after that I have to plug in the charger to keep talking), and that there is no built-in camera.
There is a review here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Noki
a _E60_Preview_The_Candybar_With_Almost_Everything.p hpIt's very stable and reliable, unlike it's N-Series brothers which are a POS. I can highly recommend the phone.

Re:The joke's on me?
Since when you are billed 5$/min by receiving a call?
You need to approve a collected call... by the way, never answer the phone by: "Yes"
You could accept a collected call ;-)
This is SIP, VOIP quality... they have good Internet Access.. but sometimes, it can be "cackly" as you said...
Most of the time, this is really good or good enough for a conversation.
Sometimes... it's like sh**
It's often worst if you have VOIP and you call someone who is already on voip... 1 delay plus 1 delay plus 1 delay = 1 long delay :-/
The best... try it and see for the quality... with jajah, you have 5 minutes
with http://www.voipbuster.com/ you can try the same thing but during 1 minute
Personnaly, I use voipbuster... -
Nice but limited...
I prefere VoipBuster.
http://www.voipbuster.com/
http://www.voipstunt.com/
http://www.netappel.fr/
http://www.sipdiscount.com/
etc...
10 euros and you can call in many countries for *free* during 120 days
after theses 120 days, these countries cost 1 euro-cent/min
When you are low in credit, you just need to add 10 euros to your account and you have 120 free days again.
You can also enter the phone number where you are (mobile phone, landline, work phone number, friend phone number, etc) and the number where you want to call. This cost only 5 euro-cents (not by minutes... only 5 cents).
This way, you can make long distance from work (if you have a direct number... or if you correspondant know your company and extension number...) even if you are not authorised for long-distance call. With this, you only need the computer with internet to make the connection, after that, you can close the browser.
You need to install their software to subscribe to their service.
After that, you can use any softphone or hardphone compatible SIP.
So you can use x-lite, sjphone or whatever else to make the calls.
Personnally, I use this service only for the phone-to-phone connection at 5... you have more flexibility and it's cheap! -
Nothing new but really nice anyway!
http://www.voipbuster.com/
http://www.sipdiscount.com/
http://www.voipcheap.com/
voipdiscount.com
voipstunt.com ...
gives... well... around 40 countries free! (well... you pay 10euros for 2 or 3 months and you can call a lot of countries for 0 cent/min or 1 cent/min)
I use it a lot (with sjphone) and for this price... this is unbeatable! But for a good VOIP, you need a good High Speed Internet Access! A delay of 1 or 2 seconds and cause a hang up before you can even try to say "hello" ;-)
sip compatible with any hardware SIP or softphone like sjPhone (mac, pc, linux, pda...)

Re:messenger?
Messenger 8 will be able, or is currently able, in beta, to do VoIP to PTSN (or PC-POTS if you prefer) through MCI at 2.3 cents per minute for US destination calls. The service is similar to Skype-out or Whatever-out. But you can already make that type of call for free, for example, and there are other examples, with VoipBuster
-
VoipBuster
Check out VoipBuster. It is similar to Skype except calls to regular telephones in most of europe and the US is free.
-
Voipbuster
You really should check voipbuster, wich allow free calls to land lines in these countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Superb hosting 2400MB Storage, 120GB bandwidth, ssh, $7.95 -
Re:What's the difference?
Heres a big difference between skype and another competitor, VOIPBuster (http://www.voipbuster.com/en/index.html): Skype charges for calls to landlines, but not to PC's. On the otherhand, VOIPBuster gives free landline rates to Austria Denmark Finland Germany Greece Ireland Luxembourg Netherlands Norway Spain Sweden Switzerland and of course the United States. The other rates are comparable (sometimes much better) and the GUI is streamlined compared to Skype. Skype is starting to bulk out into something remniscient of xp...it'll be a 5GB install before we know it.

Land phones
I don't see yet the use for this kind of software. You can call only people who have a computer and are sitting in front of it... Hmm. Personaly, I'm using voipbuster right now, this is free (or cheap, depends on the country 0.01/min), very good quality and you can reach any land phone (cell phone too but it is more expensive).

Two Words
VoIP Buster. Works like a charm. Now. No ads. And I'm not planting one now.

Re:http://www.voipbuster.com/en/index.html
I hope this clears up the confusion.
http://www.voipbuster.com/en/newsflash.html
Great news: As from today, VoipBuster is available again for all Beta testers! And on top of that we have added some popular destinations to our list of free countries as well.
BUT: To counter the misuse of our network and to reserve capacity for our genuine testers, we have limited our Free-Calls policy to 1 minute per call. If you want to enjoy UNLIMITED free calls, just register and buy 5 [euros] worth of credit. -
Re:http://www.voipbuster.com/en/index.html
Not sure how they do it, but in the last week, the credit has gone from 1 euro to 5.
One of my coworkers sent an email round last Tuesday (30th) with a Voipbuster link and the fact you only had to load 1 euro credit on it (on this page). Now, the credit's up to 5 euros. Is this to reward early adopters or is it a sign of things to come? I agree, its very cool, but sustainable?
While writing this reply, I've made my way to this page which still quotes the 1 euro charge, how very odd... -

Re:http://www.voipbuster.com/en/index.html
They make money the same way skype does. Except for the handfull of free places you can call, there are fees for the rest.
See http://www.voipbuster.com/en/rates.html -

Well, as far as VOIP is I'm very glad with voipbuster, it lets me call for free most of the landlines in europe and also in USA. It's not an opensource solution, but after all the really important thing is what can a regular guy get out technology, opensource or not. If voipbuster let me call for free most of my friends in europe I for one salute our new voip ruler, opensource or not.

Skype
"Skype is currently the only provider to allow calls to landlines and cellphones"
No it is not!
I use http://www.voipbuster.com/
Personally found it is better then Skype -
Skype - not alone, what about VOIPBuster?
Doesn't work in Linux But for $1.27 you can use Voipbuster to call a dozen countries unlimited minutes for free.
Quality is fairly good. A friend of mine has dumped his local phone service and is using this for all his calls. -
voipbuster and others
skype isnt the only one, at least one more major program can do it also:
voipbuster also allow net2phone connections (and even free for some european countries!!)
there is also a manual to work with linux
but there are more, at least around here (portugal/europe) http://voip.necty.com/ its also testing a voip to phone and it use kaix as its oficial client (so both windows and linux works fine) -
The cheapest VoIP provider, is the least known!I wouldn't bother with skype if you actually want to use VoIP as an alternative to a conventional phone as it's way too expensive.
I use http://www.voipbuster.com/Voipbuster to make calls and http://www.sipgate.co.uk/ Sipgate to recieve
Sipgate allocate UK geographical numbers to their users accounts free of charge, with the added bonus that you can you can choose any national code, it doesn't matter where you live as long as you live in the UK.
Voipbuster offer free calls to PSTN lines at these destinations.
Australia Austria Belgium Canada Czech Republic Denmark Finland France Germany Greece Hungary Ireland Luxembourg Netherlands Norway Portugal Spain Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom United States
I mean compare that with skype!
The call quality is excellent and relability is good as long as you don't use the voipbuster software although admitedly I have had some problems with Voipbuster.
For software you're better off using either x-ten or firefly which are available elsewhere on the net. Configeration is fairly straightforward
As you can see with so many destinations available as a free call, there's little point in using propriatory skype unless you value the instant messaging capabilities. Unfortunately it seems http://www.tribeworks.com/home/vibe.asp google may want to buy skype. Personally I think this is a shame because a propriatry protocol will become more popular even though there are decent open alternatives. It will be interesting what google will charge for calls
I've gone slightly overboard and invested in a http://www.sipura.com/products/spa2000.htm sipura spa 2000. It set me back about £40, has two phone lines and if you combine this with a dect phone you create a wireless SIPphone for the house. Given the price and the fact you normally need a phoneline in the firstplace, I just bought it as abit of a toy for now. By using Sipgate I can go anywhere in the world and keep the same local number which is quite cool.
You can pick up other adapters fairly cheaply but you might have to make do with a single phoneline.
There's also http://www.voipcheap.co.uk/ which is part of finarea, the company behind voipbuster http://www.call1899.co.uk/ and http://www.call18866.co.uk/ -
VOIP Buster -- why pay for outgoing voip?
It is free after the first euro. then its unlimited free international calling, i love it.
:)

VoIP Buster
This one is pretty free;
http://www.voipbuster.com/
You have to get a credit of 1 euro and you're set to go (they let you preview it for a minute if you don't have any credit).
I'm sure this is temporary, I can't see how they can keep all those countries for free for a long time.
