Re:What I think should happenA copyright security company called MediaSentry downloaded those 24 files from her. She was sharing considerably more.
The recording companies accused Thomas-Rasset of offering 1,700 songs on Kazaa as of February 2005, before the company became a legal music subscription service following a settlement with entertainment companies. For simplicity's sake the music industry tried to prove only 24 infringements.
He said MediaSentry downloaded a sample of them from the shared directory on her computer. That's an important point, given Davis' new instructions to jurors.
IMO she was guilty- but still don't agree with how they categorized her infraction as "willful infringement". The punishment was ludicrously excessive and she probably will not be able to escape it through bankruptcy. Jury Rules Against Minn. Womain in Download Case

minnesota is actually involved in a similar case with the same company: http://wcco.com/crime/breathalyzer.lawsuit.minnesota.2.669505.html. the only difference is that in our case, the state dept of public safety claims that its part of the contract that the source code be made available to the state and cmi is still refusing to provide source.

Re:policy
Yeah, and you can thank the "Union" for that.
Bullshit. Ain't the "Union" handing out awards for shooting up the wrong house.
-
Re:public relations ploy - quite likely,
While it's excellent when police DO apologize for mistakes, and work for restitution to the victims, we must not forget that the opposite also happens:
http://wcco.com/iteam/swat.team.honored.2.783216.html : SWAT team raids the wrong house, engage in a gunfight with a homeowner. They receive medals for "courage under fire" and for how they handled the situation. I wonder how things would have turned out if the homeowner had killed one of them in the process of defending his family.
The idea that the government should be exempt from criminal or civil punishment for wrongdoings is an abomination, IMO.

Stillwater lift bridge
In Minnesota the Stillwater Lift bridge spans the St. Croix between MN and WI. It was stuck open recently due to a computer malfunction. I did some digging to try to find why back then and it turns out they had just upgraded to Vista and the console locked up for about four hours. I don't think it crashed or froze because of Vista, just because the bridge is old and Vista choked on data it wasn't expecting. Can't find much about it now, though.

Re:It's not tortureAlso, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a case where the officer doesn't first say, "Settle down or you are going to be tased." Often this warning is issued repeatedly before action is taken. Like the time a cop didn't like a guy sitting on a bicycle asking questions?
Also, even if they issue a warning, is it still justified to tase a suspect if they literally sit unmoving after the warning? (Such as the multiple instances of tasering people who were in comas or in shock at the time?)
What if you had four officers on top of a person who had already been overpowered by just one of the officers alone? -

The pictures were left anonymously at the administration office. Either by a student or a parent of a student more than likely. I went to this high school and the admin has more than enough things on their plates than to surf Facebook looking for underage drinking.
The students who were suspended from sporting events because they made a commitment to the Minnesota State High School League stating they would not smoke, drink, or use drugs. They did not honor that, so they're being punished. -
Re:Not Censorship - BS
While you were asleep w/ your head up your own... The citizens of the US gave up control of our country to the businesses... The US hasn't been Of the People, for the People and by the People in ages... It's now of the Corporations, for the Corporations and by the Corporations. Haliburton, Diebold, the entire Insurance industry currently rapeing US homeowners... (Their excuse to FL home owners is "You shouldn't live there then.." OK, I'll move to Minnesota... http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_231080417.

My technique
I have a method of Minnesota infrastructure maintenance that can assure sound bridges. My technique involves billing the Twins owner for the $392 million of government revenue (collected via a sale tax hike) being used to fund the new $522 million baseball stadium. My technique also involves continuing to dash the hopes of Minnesota football fans for a new government funded $0.5 billion football stadium. Instead, let the team owners rely on sports geek revenue to fund their stadiums, and misappropriate the tax revenue into infrastructure.
On the other hand, perhaps it isn't necessary to piss off all the Minnesota sports geeks (read: voters) and instead utilize the $2 billion dollar state surplus to deal with the states bridges. But alas, there are voters to buy with that money.
This is about the priorities of the citizens of a staggeringly wealthy nation being focused on everything but the infrastructure. -
Re:All Cars or Trucks Too?
You are shamefully uninformed. Gasoline taxes have not been raised in many years and contribute a minority of the funding for roads at this time in most states. Here is an example from Minnesota, where property taxes pay the MAJORITY of road funding. Every property owner pays for roads whether or not they use them.
I don't know what state you live in, but I will bet you a gallon of hi-test that your state pays a large share if not a majority for roads using non-fuel/license/registration tax dollars.
I think the fuel tax should be indexed against construction costs, which have been skyrocketing in most areas for 20 years. The fuel tax has not been raised nearly as much in this time, leading to the current budget crunch and funding from inappropriate sources. I also think developers (which effectively means the buyers in the development) should pay the entire cost of new roads and road expansion instead of burdening people who don't use the new development. -
Re:Infrastrucutre in place?
Dude. You haven't lived until you've lived within smelling distance of an ethanol plant. Here in St. Paul, we had a (now defunct) brewery that was so desperate for cash that it conned the city into letting it turn most of its production over to ethanol.
It was barely a mile from downtown -- and upwind of it, too! I can't imagine how awful it must have been for them; I lived up a hill and two miles away from the joint (and away from the prevailing air currents), and I still smelled them half the time
... imagine a jillion bakery ovens, all cooking the sickliest-smelling, yeastiest bread ever, and you'll get an idea of what St. Paul smelled like for the few years it was operational. But, ya know, the thing's gone now. And the whole town's lousy with ethanol pumps; I'm well within walking distance of more than one of 'em. So as long as the plant is properly NIMBY'ed (say
... Fargo, or thereabouts), ethanol ain't such a bad deal for the Average Midwesterner. -

It IS a real fire hazard
It is not really a security issue but it is a real fire hazard problem. Dell batteries have a documented history (some with pictures or videos) of bursting into flames, and I would not want to be on an airplane at 40,000 feet when somebody's Dell bursts into flame. I know that the recall is only for certain models but it would be too onerous for the flightcrew to sort out which Dells or Apples could become airborn flambeaus.

Re:To keep up with Dell
Apple has already implemented that feature in their older ibook line of lapt...I mean notebooks
;) -
Typical Dell.
How is it possible that even images of their own device on fire could look so boring. They're so devoid of composition, of sensitivity.
In this other example, the victim has taken time to place the burning device against a backdrop of roughly hewn rock, and has done so at a time of day deserving of the generous tones cast by the flames as they lash, even swagger about the white plastic..
Dell, here this: even in death, one should look positively gorgeous. -
This is a common occurenceI was going to make a joke linking this story and a recent story about an iBook catching fire (on video as well) with Dell now listing Apple Mac OS X as a choice on their driver download page. This is serious though.
People, do not use your laptop on carpet or in situations where it may not get ample ventilation. It can burst into flames and harm people or property... well definitely the laptop at least. Read your manuals and follow the disclaimers.Warning: Do not place your iBook G4 on a pillow or other soft material when it is on,
as the material may block the airflow vents, in particular the rear vents, and cause the
computer to overheat. -Apple iBook manual (Page 70) -

Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
Democrats were only accused of doing this by the Republicans and only laptops (the easiest and most valuable hardware to steal) were taken, quickly from an office where they were plainly visible from the street.
And can we assume that the Washington Post will assign a modern-day Woodward and Bernstein to investigate and report on this and the other breakins? I thought not.Engaging in vandalism against Bush offices by teenagers is not quite as bad as tearing up valid registrations.
So it's only bad when your crimes benefit Republicans?Criminally negligent op-ed pieces do not facts make.
Fact: liberals burned swastikas into lawns that had Bush-Cheney signs. Or is it only voter intimidation when Republicans do it? Or is it only a hate crime when the KKK burns a cross in a black family's yard?Accusing a group of committing illegal activities with no evidence is a typical Republican tactic.
Yeah, only the republicans ever falsely accuse their opponents of committing illegal activities.Press releases aimed at creating a non-existant scandal and failing are pretty weak as a source.
Must you liberals always have your research done for you? Finally, defrauding a company by making up fake voter registrations to earn more money in a $9 per hour job is not making people think they are registered when they are not.
And shooting someone is not stabbing them. Either way, it's murder. And either way, it's voter registration fraud. Or is it, once again, only bad when it's a Republican who does it?Take off your DNC-issue blinders, and maybe you'll see that both sides engage in all sorts of nefarious activities to make sure their side wins. Nothing to see here, move along.

Re:One good point...
Billboards in Minneapolis have sprung up recently, saying "Don't Vote".
Some people are concerned because some of the billboards are in areas with high minority concentrations.
Clear Channel, the owners of the billboards, say that it is a teaser for a "non-product" ad campaign that will be revealed October 11th.
My guess: this is actually part of a pro-vote campaign. Get people riled up by telling them not to vote, then post new billboards with some consequences of what happens if you don't vote. (Like the prov-vote ad on the radio where the guy gets his car painted lilac by a body shop who "made the decision for him".) -
