Here is what I use
This is great for those folks that refuse to give up Internet Exploiter(TM)(Like my Mom,Unfortunatly) Or click yes to everything--http://www.webattack.com/get/sandboxi
e .html Basically I just install all their browsers into the sandbox then when they bring it back to be cleaned I can just delete the sandbox folder after backing up their bookmarks. It really does help with the ActiveX/Toolbar style crap that so many people fall for. -
IZarc
Windows?
You might want to try IzArc
I've been using it for quite awhile now, supports not only zip/rar, but a whackload of others including tar.gz, tar.bz2, etc
Doesn't seem to have any hidden surprises in it either, just very useful (and free) software. -
Freeware Tools Listhttp://www.trickingq3.com/freeware_tools/
This wiki page is a conglomeration of work and suggestions from many different forums I am a part of. Lots of good utilities available such as:
Nokia Monitor test: Test your CRT for focus, convergence, moire, geometry, voltage regulation, etc.
Locate - Windows version of a linux utility. Creates a database of every file on your drives. You can then search and get instant results.
Unstoppable Copier - The program allows you to attempt recovery of files from a physically or logically damaged disk. The program will attempt to recover as much data as possible without giving up once an error is encountered. The program allows recursive copying of whole disks.
OpenOffice.org - Think: Free MS Office without the bloat. Has Writer (word), Calc, Impress (powerpoint), Draw (vector art program) and the DB user tools to give you all the tools you need for day to day database work in a simple spreadsheet-like form.
Here is the full list:
File Utils- CKRename - Tool to mass rename files in a folder. Works very well for renaming MP3s.
- WinMerge (Use latest RC under beta builds) - Compare document, script, HTML, etc content versions (compares what has changed from revision to revision).
- XXCopy - Extended version of XCopy. This is a great utility for scripting file backups from one drive to another.
- ISOBuster - Open CD/DVD ISOs, BINs, IMGs, etc without having to burn them. Can extract files without burning as well.
- Vim - Improved version of the vi editor.
- IrfanView - Batch Image Processing and viewer (much like ACDSee, but FREE!).
- Diskeeper Lite - An updated version of the disk defragmenter that comes with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. This version does a better job of defragging the drive and shows you more information. The site isn't the manufacturer's, but the download does come directly from them. ExecSoft doesn't have this listed on their site anywhere anymore.
- Locate - Windows version of a linux utility. Creates a database of every file on your drives. You can then search and get instant results.
- xvi32 Hex Editor - Very nice hex editor.
- 7-Zip - A freeware file archiver. It supports all of the popular formats (ZIP, CAP, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB) as well as its own format, 7z.
- Max Lister - Create text lists of files in folders. For example, it's useful for an mp3 list.
Installation / Automation
- InnoSetup - Create your own EXE installers.
- ISTool - A GUI front-end for creating InnoSetup installer scripts.
- WinINSTALL LE 2003 - Create your own MSI installers. Also edit existing MSI installers (change options, add/remove components, etc).
- KiXtart - Advanced batch processing language. Commonly used for logon scripts but can be used to accomplish many tasks (comparable to using VBScript and WELL documented).
- AutoIt - Create scripts to send keys to applictions. Commonly used to "silently" install applictions that don't natively support silent install switches.

Another mouse wiggler bites the dust....
Let this be a lesson out there to all the mouse wiggling MSCE's who scorn the uptime of UNIX and shun the power commandline. If you are running a critical Windows Server, REBOOT EARLY and REBOOT OFTEN. Remember, REBOOT-ing is part of the job description and it has to be done. Please protect our key infrastructure and reboot your servers WEEKLY! Just beacause the UNIX guys get 2 years of uptime, doesn't mean you can too. It just doesn't work that way.
Might I suggest this wonderful little tool. Poweroff. It's the only tool I know of which seems to be able to reliable reboot widows boxes, even when they are crippled due to worms and/or memory leaks. It can even close running apps. Also, you get get it to work over the network with a magic packet, in case Terminal Server crashes or is too slow to use.
The main article should get flagged as troll/flamebait due to the phrase upgrade from Unix to Windows. That wasn't an upgrade, that (as we now know) it was a disaster waiting to happen. Wait until the worm of the month comes through and shuts it down. When will people learn to use the RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB! If it has to run 24x7 forever, don't put it on Windows. Geez... -
Re:Specific solutions - try RegShot!
I think I have just the thing for comparing old/new registry snapshots -- RegShot.
It's free (as in beer).
You can make snapshots of certain points in time, and compare shots for differences. Unfortunately, the snapshots themselves are garbled (iow it's not standard .reg files), but otherwise it's a neat, simple, effective program.
I use this (and RegTick) to manage and lock down a bunch of computers at a youth center, and it's working quite nicely. -

This is a joke right?
Go download Active Ports and see what program is actually casuing that port to be open.
You can also try running this document in the reverse order to uninstall PPTP :) -

Ok...For average computer usage...
Really, it's hard to pinpoint withoug knowing what you're going to be using it for, however, for basic needs, I utilize the following (win32. I have a pair of RH boxes, but they are both servers without KDE/Gnome, so I don't use Linux desktops much):
Mozilla 1.4
(The whole suite) mail/browser with additional functionlity provided by a couple of plugins (EasySearch bar, Optimoz Mouse Gestures and the Calendar). Been playing with Firebird/Thunderbird, but thunderbird has a bit to go before it's up to the level ot the regular Mozilla mail client.
AntiVIR free Antivirus.
Updates every 2 weeks (or more if you're paranoid). Used AVG (Grisoft's product) for a while, but had issues with its W2k/XP compatibility. That was over a year ago, however.
EnZip Freeware Zip Utility
Explorer-like interface, with shell extensions and all. No nag screens!
FileZillaOpen-source FTP utility
Includes queuing and scheduling functions. Better than WsFTP lite.
Putty freeware SSH client
Nuf said!
iXplorer Freeware secure FTP client
Transfer files over SSH connections. Useful for transferring files to/from Linux hosts without opening up FTP.
WinAmp free Multimedia Player
With some plugins, can play almost any type of media file.
There's more, but I'm not going to list everything I use. Normally I'd just send you to my website, but I'm not going to /. my own site. It's just a little 486 box on a DSL connection! -
Here are some good freebees

Webattack.com
I use this site a lot. Originally it had web related apps, but they have broadened their offerings over the last two years.
Apps come with ratings, file size, link to the developer home page, and also let you know if the free apps are Adware.
They have a Shareware section and a Freeware section.

Copyrights and Copying...Copyright law only applies to what goes public. Anything used for private (meaning you and only you ever see it) is not copyright violation. In other words, using (for instance) SmartRipper to copy a DVD to your hard drive and, well, do whatever you want with it is perfectly legitimate as long as you do not try to sell, rent, lease, distribute, or otherwise try to display it to the public. This goes for all copyright material in the United States. See Lanham Act of 1976, aka the Copyright Act, aka Title 17.
This tells us two things: (1) attempts to restrict our fair use of [fill in the blank] is evidence that some very powerful people don't understand copyright law; (2) some very powerful people are willing to sacrifice the freedom of those who don't break the law (legitimate gun owners, legitimate users of CD/DVD-copying software, etc.) in order to dissuade criminals.
That's called taking the easy way out. Com'on, guys, we elect you to cushy jobs where you get paid $130,000+ (tax-free) so you can be creative and actually get stuff done for us!

Re:Dark data....
If you are being half-way serious. Try downloading Space Monger. On Windows at least it does a Great! job of helping you understand what the "dark data" on every hard disk actually is. Always amazes me how much of it is under the Windows directory.
Cheers, Leif -
Re:it's not very hard
Well, how is Joe User going to install, let alone build, a regexp-based filter on his version of MSIE?
I can see text-ads sticking around simply because you can't *easily* filter them by installing one of several apps that changes your hosts file, or by installing a custom stylesheet. -
Re:WineX
And how difficult is this file, or other commonly needed Windows libraries such as msvcrt, the VB6 runtime library, comdlg32.ocx, etc. to obtain without a Windows installation?
-
Re:It's true
Yeah. As if there aren't tons of freeware alternatives to each and every one of the programs you mention. Also, WindowBlinds is hardly a member program of a productivity suite now, it is?
WebAttack.com is a great place to find freeware utilities like zip managers, media players, etc. Stop your damn whining and do a little searching. You're starting to sound like a Windoze user... -
NothingIt doesn't provide -any- service or do anything besides displaying a message on your screen that your network admin wanted to broadcast.
Frankly, the only time I've seen it used is when I annoy the hell out of my co-workers by sending them anonymous popus using this lovely piece of Windows software.

Re:I dont enter my email"In other words, pretty much give it away for free. (90 days apart to uninstall/reinstall or in some cases reformat is not much of a pain in the ass.) Not that this surprises me coming from Slashdot, News for People Who Don't Want To Pay."
I am a student with not too much money. I try to get freeware or Free (as in speech) software as much as possible (but of course you know how piracy is on university campuses for the commercial software that they use in the labs.)
The only pieces of software that I have paid money for (online) are the following:
- Turbo Navigator - US$10 - It is an excellent Norton Commander clone for win32- The Official Page is acting funny so check this Unofficial Page if you want.
- Query-Web - US$9.95 - A highly unique program that uses SQL in combination with HTML/XML to generate pages dynamically from MS Access databases. It is how Webattack is generated. When I get into my job this summer I will have money again and probably pay for Trillian and donate to the Ogg Vorbis Project as well.
The things that these progs have in common are that I could have gotten it all legally for free anyway; There were no time limitations, nag screens or improved functionality promises for those who pay. I paid because the programmers did an excellent job of making a program that was useful to me and requested reasonable payment for it. Paying because the software will otherwise commit suicidce after 30 (90, whatever) days is not IMHO a good reason.
Going through my old credit card bills that's it for internet purchases of software but that does not include stuff like domain registration and buying computer equipment online. The things listed here are of course totally separate from the stuff bought in brick&mortar stores.

Have you checked out SWiSH.
This is what it says about itself: Do you want to get into Flash(TM) but can't afford the steep price and even steeper learning curve? Then SWiSH is the tool for you! -
Method to remove Morpheus spyware
The new Morpheus marketing program is based on a technology called browser helper objects (BHO), which attach themselves to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser
The Morpheus spyware is just a .dll that will be loaded every time your Internet Explorer starts. It is registered in the windows registry.
So this bho spyware can be removed by using bhocaptor . Bhocaptor displays all bho that are registered within windows registry. So, what you need to do is to select Morpheus bho(a .dll file) and then deactivate it.
As bho is an Internet explorer technology, those who are using netscape or mozilla should be immune to this spyware. -
Microplanet "Gravity"
I always liked 'trn' under Unix, though I think it's pretty much been orphaned now. I've also heard good things about 'slrn' and 'nn'. All of these are console-based readers. I left the Unix scene too long ago to have found a good reader that runs under X.
Under Win32 I think that Microplanet's Gravity is a fantastic reader. It got orphaned a year or two ago (and the link is down now, so the company may be defunct) but you can still get it from various download sites. Try Webattack.
When Microplanet abandoned it they released the last build (v2.50) as freeware. Good going, guys! I liked it enough to pay for it at v1.1, and I'm glad it's still available.

Downloading Proprietary Format
You can download it. Use ASF Recorder (manages ASX files too)

Fun links 4 u!
While we're waiting for the article to come back, take a look at this site about p2p, this article with statistics on gnutella and links, and of course this list of p2p clients. There might be some interesting things in this slashdot article. And yes I am a filthy karma whore, and no I have no shame whatsoever.
