CDs are Crappy Presents
I'm pleasantly surprised that this site is still around.
CDs make crappy presents. Don't buy them.

Obligatory "second opinion" ;-)

Re:The patch is flawedjust in case I, or anyone in my family decides to buy a MediaMax protected CD (or are given one as a gift)
Spread the word, CDs make crappy presents.
If somebody gives you a CD for Xmas, simply refuse it like you would a moldy fruitcake.
FWiW, I'm yet another person who'll never buy anything from Sony, ever again.

Re:Death of filesharing?I hate the assumtion that people buy blank cds so they can pirate music. First of all, copying a cd so you have a backup in case it gets scratched (or better yet, so you can use the copy so the one you paid for doesn't get scratched) is legal, is fair-use, and not piracy. Second, there are thousands on things I have done with blank cds that have nothing to do with music. I buy cd-rs by the hundreds and I don't think one in a hundred of them gets music on it. I read some stupid article the other day that had some quote from some crying music store owner about how people only come in for blank cds anymore, not for music, and I just wanted to say "HELLO!" blank cds are not just for music. If your store sells cd-rs for cheaper then other stores, I'll buy hundreds of cd-rs from you, but that indicates I'm stealing music about as much as it indicates I'm stealing breakfast cereal.
If you are only using blank media for legitimate purposes, then a)good on you, and b)you are in the minority.
Whilst legitimate use is entirely possible, you cannot tell me that you seriously believe that all the buyers of blank media are only using it for good not evil (feel free to invert the 'good' and 'evil' based on your beliefs).
I personally believe that media cartels are unnecessary, evil organisations that should be wiped out. They give nothing to the artist and the give nothing to the fans. They are parasites. Anything that aids their demise (ie. filesharing, etc.) is alright by me. See here for some good reasons they should go.

Re:One hundred channels of "Public Access"
Because the collective mind here will dub it "better then teh EVIL money making corporations' crap!!111" Add the keywords "open source" and they will fall all over the concept, no matter how unrealistic or unlikely projects like this one will succeed.
Granted, the hypocrites here are probably not going to watch this crap either. I wouldn't be surprised if for the most part the device ends up being used to download commercial TV shows and movies, then to watch "The life of Joe Blow #2342343242."
Given the source of the device and their "why pay/this should be free/the companies are Satan!" attitude, I am willing to bet that is what they are really intending do to with it. -
For those of you just joining ...
If you are new to this topic, check out Downhill Battle or EFF or my website. By the way, the Xmas season is almost upon us. Time to remind people that CDs make crappy presents.

Re:Gift Cards are a dumb idea
OK, better example. I want to buy my brother a CD, but you can't return CDs here and if he doesn't like it, or already has it, I'm out the money. If I give him cash, he won't use it to buy a CD, he'll blow it on fast food and crap like that. I give him gift cards because he simply isn't very good with money but definitely wants CDs.

Well, let's see. Since you obviously can't click.
Just sitting on your hands and whinning about something when you can quickly find out & decide for yourself is silly. I'll humour you for a couple more clicks, though...
WhatACrappyPresent is their creation, and they've been in the news a whole bunch. You can even call Nicholas, one of the creators of the site, at home via the whois info. I'm sure he'll be happy to answer your questions. -
I love Slashdot
I love Slashdot. It always latches onto some single study or report and drives it home as evidence for their entire viewpoint. For instance, when the RIAA sent hundreds of thousands of lawsuits, and a couple of them happened to end up at places where someone used a grandfather's computer or some 11-year old girl used her mommy's computer. Suddenly, the RIAA is bullying! And the mantra repeated is that it's "crappy music" that is hurting sales, even though both crappy and good music has always been around.
Now, a single Australian study shows that sales went up instead of down, and suddenly that's evidence that MP3s and CD-Rs don't hurt sales. Meanwhile, COMMON SENSE AND LOGIC dictates that someone would rather go online and download an album for free in 10 minutes rather than go to the store and buy it for $10.
Nobody on Slashdot can offer a single valid justification for downloading music without paying for it. Not a one. I feel sorry for the artists that get ripped off. Here comes the part where people try to reply with "BUT THE RIAA RIPS THEM OFF EVERYDAY!1" even though the bands willingly signed contracts with their labels.
You want to know how much of a joke it's become? See What A Crappy Present. Kids aren't going to be buying albums anymore because you people have made downloading so commonplace. Think it through. What do you think is going to happen? Labels will stop taking chances on bands because they don't get returns on those investments, since "culture movement" people like you download the fuck out of them. -
I got your crappy present
right here!
Although the end result seems ok :) -
uh oh

Hey kids, tell your folks!
RIAA companies CDs: " What a crappy present!"

Re:Not Another Penny From MeWhat people disgusted by RIAA actions need to do is to work hard to educate the public about why the industry does not deserve our support.
This is quite an apt link along those lines - http://www.whatacrappypresent.com. Something light hearted like this is generally much more effective that preaching (no matter how good your arguments are).

Tyrrany is powerless against mockery. What a crappy present!
