Should sexist developers be removed?
Should sexist developers have their projects censored or removed?
Recently an opensource game release story was removed due to the game developer's open sexism(0) and harrasment(1) of women in tech.
A story posted by the editor of the popular Phoronix linux news site about a release of an Open Source videogame was later manually removed(2). The reason cited was the game developer's unacceptable views on social issues such as gender equality (3).
The release story was titled "Xonotic-Forked ChaosEsqueAnthology Sees New Release - Phoronix" and can be accessed via the google cache(4).
With the recent inclusion of a code of conduct(5) for those wishing to contribute to the Linux Kernel some questions now need to be asked and answered about the inclusion of code from people who are known to engage in or promote socially unacceptable attitudes or harrasments of those whom the free-software movement would prefer to attract in their place:
* Are the social or political views of an author of free software relevant to that software's inherent quality?
* Should the beliefs of an opensource developer weigh when when evaluating whether a piece of opensource software is worthy of any publicity or public notice?
* Should men with unpopular or "forbidden" views be excised from the opensource movement and "not allowed" to contribute, in a manner similar to that which is done in employment?
* Has the free/opensource software movement changed in these respects since its founding? If so is this a positive change?
* Should there be gatekeepers to opensource that decide who may and who may not contribute. Should abusive developers be "blackballed" to maintain proper social order and controls?and
* What are the consequences of not doing this

Should sexist opensource developers be removed?
With all the proactive steps being taken to improve society for the benefit of the fae, another question must be asked:
Should sexist opensource developers have their projects censored or removed?

Re:What about HL2: Episode 3
I could care less about HL3.
Obligatory PSA regarding your butchered idiom.
On topic: Completely agree. In the Zero Punctuation review of The Orange Box Yahtzee observed that:
Episode 2 does suffer a little from being the middle child, there's no real beginning and no real end so the story tends to meander around and it's difficult to shake the feeling that we're just killing time before the next episode wraps it all up.
Over 7 years later we're still waiting...

Re:3.4 mill?
Probably. I only vaguely remember that and I'm an old fart. Mind, as a young sprout I was in England where we learned to dial 999* in emergencies. At least when North America adopted a similar scheme they change it to 911 so you didn't have to wait the inexorable amount of time for the dial to rotate back from 9 rather than 1 on the last two digits. (Yes, it was before touch tone was ubiquitous.)
*Rather than the New and Improved emergency number, 0118 999 881 999 119 7253.**
**I hate explaining jokes, but here.

Re:Surprise level: 0
Police tampering with what amounts to evidence of their own crimes? Wow, what a suprise.
And when the shoe was on the other foot, Jimmy Wales had Wikia delete a page listing evidence of misconduct by Wikipedia administrators in the Gamergate controversy. This happened during the evidence phase of the Arbcom case.
On that subject, Gamergate's perspective on Wikipedia is both hilarious and frightening. Within the past three days someone was banned for reporting a protected editor breaking a topic ban. Another of the protected editors called an admin a Nazi and they blocked some other random editor who stepped in to say that seemed uncivil.

Re:As long as he isn't the focus of the MCU
I think you're underestimating his physical abilities (understandable, the movies don't really emphasize them as much as they probably should). At one point, Spiderman was listed as the 4th strongest character in the marvel universe (behind the Hulk, the Thing, and Thor). Admittedly, the marvel universe was less populated, but he's still above Captain America (20 tons vs 1200lbs). He's also got reflexes and balance about as good as Cap, plus spider sense... he doesn't have Cap's experience (though he's probably closer than most, given how many issues he's had) and he doesn't have the shield (but can do a lot with webbing). He definitely lacks Cap's leadership skills. He's probably not suited to be a member of the Avengers for a number of reasons, but he's in that league.

Then this reveals my ignorance, because I would have assumed/hoped that there is full body armour which protects the limbs while not significantly restricting movement.
Whoever your are, AC, I applaud your frankness. Admitting ignorance is kind of rare in these parts. Heh.
Anyway, unless you want to wear full plate armor, like the days of long past, no. Even then, stopping a rifle round--probably not.
Now, a Holtzman shield would work. See http://dune.wikia.com/wiki/Shi... in case you aren't familiar with them.

Re:Outcome of the vote
A current trend in socio-political theory is Uri Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory which states: "...basic science needs public policy even more than public policy needs basic science". Get it? Policy drives the science.
-
Re:Scientific question
Regardless of specifics of the actual objective results, anthropogenic climate change is a scientific question...
Probably, though the current trend in socio-political thinking follows Uri Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory where it is stated that: "...basic science needs public policy even more than public policy needs basic science". Meaning policy drives science.
This putting the cart before the horse thinking is behind Common Core and most likely the Climate Issue as well. Good luck to us all!

Stargate was the first thing that came to mind in the prior story regarding SpaceX's Satellite Internet; which described the ultimate goal of an internet connection to Mars. Perhaps it would look something like this:
McKay/Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge
Then again, this bridge was between two galaxies, not two planets within the same solar system and an obstruction (the sun) to contend with once a year. -

Re:utf-32/ucs-4
i don't see a real argument here. "considering the length". how long is it?
Check the game history. Literally decades between major releases.
"some of the silliness". what silliness is this exactly? external storage of utf-32 requires that one deal with an endian character set. every time any text is touched, you'll get to endian convert.
Everybody has already settled on the little-endian presentation.
isn't that awesome? utf-8 does not have this issue. and one can almost always treat utf8 as a byte stream. except in the rare case where one needs to know where character boundaries are. for example, to map the character to a font. the fast path is the common path (ascii), and just requires a single test ((c&0x80) == 0).
With UCS-4 you do not even need any tests.
Extracting a character - trivial.
Length of string - trivial.
Normalization - much simpler than the utf-8.
The sad reality that libraries I have seen actually implement the utf-8 handling by using internally utf-32. You can't avoid it: Unicode is specified in the code points, which as you point it out are already as good as 32 bit long.
sure the gnu c library has had bad wchar_t conversion routines in the past, but it's a free country. you can implement your own.
Frankly, I haven't even used C library for the purpose. We had already one library developed in-house, because portable support for utf-8 is patchy at best.
The sanest portable approach is to link with iconv and convert everything from some internal presentation to external. Because you can never know what encoding user needs. Unless you really need to save the RAM (one has shitload of string data), utf-8 simply sucks as internal presentation.
P.S. I have had very little experience with Unicode. But several month of dealing with it, have simply convinced me that if one has to deal with l10n/i10n, then utf-16/utf-32 are very good choices. Ditto, if one has to deal with the Unicode. If application really doesn't care what it prints or reads - then pass-through binary (utf-8) works too. But as soon as one has to take the length of utf-8 string (real length), then it is time to start switching from utf-8 to utf-32.
