Civil Protection in Half-Life 2
I couldn't help being reminded of Civil Protection's technology in Half-Life 2. If you've played even the very first level, you'll remember the flying scanners that strobe you and take your picture: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/City_Scanner
I suppose the drones described in the story are a combination of those scanners and Manhacks, except the drones probably can't fly too low. Of course, with miniaturization

Re:Never mind prequels
In the post Star Was novels it was revealed that Palpatine had clones of himself. His 'essence' fled Endor and moved into a clone.
Luke even went over to the Dark Side for a time, but Leia pulled him back and together they defeated Palpatine.

Latter Canceled. Need New Avenues.
We want sequels to Return of the Jedi. Wasn't he originally going to do 3 sets of trilogies: with the 3rd set later on, and the only common characters would be the 2 droids?
Yes, those were the initial plans. Although there was a very important if in their plans. From what I've heard through rumors, Lucas had two trilogies he could tell and he picked the stronger of the two (prequels) to do first. If that was financially successful and well received then he would continue with the sequels. I think this strategy changed with the release of the first or second episode and the latter sequel was canceled altogether.
Keep in mind that Harrison Ford turned down a Han Solo spinoff and opted instead for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (with a fifth shaping up).
I don't want later sequels. If anything is done in the Star Wars universe, I want the Timothy Zahn Trilogy done as three movies. Thrawn is badass. I want a TV series that takes stories like the "Tales" series of SW books and brings them to life.
Personally I think the characters in Episodes I, II and III were so weak that we need new characters that aren't supposed to fulfill some other plot line's obligations. -

Re:why all the humanoid alien races?
The Hanar are pretty non humanoid. http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Hanar as are the Rachni. http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Rachni Both are intelligent races. I think part of it might be conformation bias, perhaps you're more likely to interact with races that you can communicate and share facilities with easily.

This is Slashdot. Most of us refuse to wear one tie, never mind two. Although the Doc Brown chrome glasses would let us sleep at work without anyone knowing, currently only possible if one goes though the trouble of learning how to sleep with one's eyes open.
You may be on to something here.

Then what is a Naquadah generator? Naquadria is a far less stable, more powerful isotope of Naquadah that SGC used to produce the first hyperspace capable Goa'uld/Tau'ri hybrid fighter aircraft.

Stop. Take a Step Back.
What is you want to do. Running some exotic X config isn't a goal, it's a very specific tactic. The fact that you haven't found anything like this, but stuff that is close, but not close enough, should make you pause.
What's your use case? Is it this: http://ask.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1528666&cid=30942320
Forget the "multiple X sessions." Again, that's a tactic. What behavior are you looking for? It sounds like you just want a virtual desktop pager for each monitor. It's been a while, but I imagine you could hack something like Sawfish and Sawfish-Pager to do what you want. You just have to hack up some lisp, which would be good for you.

MP3 with embedded lyrics? Irrelevant.
If you happen to be one of those lucky persons who happen to have adopted a media player such as Amarok as their media player of choice then you can simply open Amarok's script manager and install the LyricWiki plugin. That enables your media player of choice to just dish out any particular words to a song you wish to access. The beauty of this plugin/site combo is that you can get any lyrics you wish for any obscure artist and perfectly independent of any corporation, media player and even format in which your songs are stored. And album artwork? You already get that by default in Amarok.
So where exactly is there a need for an encumbered, defective, unsupported and obscure format to be able to do exactly what countless people are already doing at this very moment?

Source Metadata?
I often see some metadata inserted by an editor (eg, vim) when looking at open source code. Examples of how this metadata (called "modelines") is used verifies that it is in fact used to control things like tab/space use. See Vim Tips Wiki, Modeline magic for the examples. From a little searching it seems this feature has existed for quite some time.
Given that it exists in editors already, it would seem that the ability for an editor or IDE to use the metadata-given convention for saving the file, while using the user-given convention during view/edit of said file, would allow for your preferences to be maintained while you work and the project's preferences to be enforced when passing files back to it.

"Lack of lettered buttons"? They're all lettered. I see a Greek delta, an omicron or O, a chi or X, and a katakana ro. But then I also see an X, a box (square), and 360 degrees (circle).

Re:#include "less.h"
vim already does exactly this. http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Modeline_magic
it looks like this. (ts = tabstop, sw=shiftwidth)
// vim: noai:ts=4:sw=4
-or- /* vim: noai:ts=4:sw=4
*/
-or- /* vim: set noai ts=4 sw=4: */
-or- /* vim: set fdm=expr fde=getline(v\:lnum)=~'{'?'>1'\:'1': */so using your example:
/* MS_VC_INTENT=2; MS_VC_TAB=4 */if you put on top of your file,
// vim: set tabstop=4 shiftwidth=2then vim will do the correct thing.

Re:JavaScript audio?
One of the first when I investigate an "active content" technology is what kind of game can be implemented with it. For example, Tetris has always needed at least non-blocking input, a fairly reliable timer, and repainting existing screen elements. But due to more recent changes to the Tetris Guideline, it also requires audio support to play sound effects and the "Korobeiniki" song. Racing games need volume and pitch controls to play engine noise, and rhythm games need synchronization among audio, animation, and input.

From Uncyclopedia:
Historically, whites have referred to those of other races by different Colors. The dark brown people are black, the deeply tanned are red, the not quite as pale but certainly still rather pale are yellow, etc. Jews are blue, named after the color of the lights they hang on their Christmas trees. Arabs are purple, because they are all homosexuals. Mexicans are pink, because they are part-white and part-American Indian. Those not able to be categorized are black because they are the biggest racists of all. Those named after primary colors are better than those named for mixed colors. White is best, because it is pure. White people are colored. Color White is combination of all colors both primary and secondary. Like monkeys. Monkeys are all the colors too. Like gold. Whites have gold hair. Serengeti monkeys have gold hair too. That is soooo weird! Pure gold (though, that is also kind of colored yellow as well...). Black sucks. It is the absence of all colors. So black people are not colored at all. but whites are all colors. Weird!!! -

Re:Physicists? While you are trained in Computer Science and are actively applying Computer Science to your job, you are not working as a Computer Scientist.
You are working as a network administrator. Like any field, network administration benefits from knowledge of other fields. In your case, you are using your knowledge and training in Computer Science, Mathematics, and (I'm sure) other fields to your current problem, and it's better off for it. You are practically applying scientific fields.
Most of the work I did while working on my Computer Science degree was on textbook and paper. Computers were occasionally used for mock-ups and proofs of concept, but most of the lessons that I learned were pure theory. Think about that
... you don't need computers to practice Computer Science (and, indeed, the early forefathers of the field didn't even have them).Sadly, the majority of CS majors end up getting jobs in IT, network administration, etc. This because there are way more jobs building things than there are researching them. CS people are often sought out for those jobs because their CS training is very applicable to the work (as you so clearly demonstrated). However, don't fool yourself. Even if your job title reads "Computer Scientist", most corporations see that as analogous to "guy who knows how to use a computer". Computer Science is all about the theory.
If you're reading this as some sort of elitism, you're reading it incorrectly. It's an important technical distinction, and one that is becoming more apparent as the field matures and Computer Science ascends towards the HTW just as Information Technology drifts towards Engineering.

Re:Why not build a "not that bad"-technology?
They still produce radioactive waste, which we cannot handle.
Where did you get the idea that we can't handle it, other than pointless fear-mongering from babbling political blowhards? The US has vast areas of desert where we've been test-detonating nuclear weapons for decades. Blast a huge hole miles deep out in the middle of nowhere, line it with concrete, and dump the waste. It's not going anywhere and even if it did, who cares, it's miles beneath the surface. And that's just off the top of my head.
Meanwhile, burning coal releases radiation as well, plus tons of smoke containing all kinds of vile pollutants, but we're happy to just release that freely to the atmosphere and not worry about it? It's this kind of idiotic thinking that got us where we are.
We want a decentralized energy production to become independent from big energy companies and to produce the energy more safely.
Did it occur to you that the economies of scale mean that centralising power generation and distribution is a lot more safe and efficient and cheap than each neighborhood having their own reactor or coal plant or whatever? Until we have Mr Fusion Home Energy Reactors that can be put in every basement or utility closet, it makes no sense to decentralise. -

How to prevent a collision
First off, guys, don't try and just nuke it. You'll still have asteroid coming at you, just smaller pieces. (In space, this is actually better (it'd burn up in the atmosphere better). On Earth, it wouldn't mean shit.)
Of course, who wants to bet there's a naquadah reactor on the asteroid? You gotta use the hyperspace drive to jump it through the planet! -

Re:PR "Stuff" from Fireeye
Exactly. The only way for the US to have won in Nam would have been to destroy everything (which was humanely and politically unpalatable). The only way to win in Iraq is to turn it into a glass parking lot (which would also be humanely and politically unpalatable).
But with spam... that may be a bit more palatable, if we can get people to accept responsibility for getting hosed.
Since such a solution in the computer world would NOT be unpalatable, then, this is the answer...

Re:Chicken Little
There are a lot of ways to correct factual errors that don't involve telling the other person to shut up.
You made a comment which was entirely composed of factual errors on slashdot, and now you're upset that people are picking it apart and suggesting that you shut your piehole until something useful might come out of it? You must be new here.
Your post had a lot of excellent points, but then you crapped all over it with an ad homid attack.
Holy shit, werewolf attack! I wouldn't stand for that either.
Your comment is amateurish at best, and your followup whinge is pathetic. But if you're a whiner in training, I guess it works. Next time, take a deep breath and count to ten before you reply. If "it's just not worth it", don't click submit. You may, however, find it cleansing to write the comments even when you don't submit them; I know I do. It's what you do afterwards that counts; I suggest ^W

Superheroes
Most comic book superheroes are vigilantes. They work outside the law to bring evildoers to justice. When drawn like Adonii and Venii, with skin-tight spandex costumes and long flowing capes, their actions are well understood to be for the common good.
Contrast this with vigilantes in real life. When people act outside the law to bring down "evildoers" we call them terrorists, murderers, and Menaces to society. We simply can't tolerate vigilantism in a civilized society. Justice must operate within the confines of the law, and that implies that the accused must have some level of privacy.
To open the case up to the general public means forcing any shred of privacy of every employee of AIG out into the open. It also means that anyone with an agenda can use the material to find ways to destroy those employees. It encourages vigilantism and erodes the rights of everyone for no good reason.
