Re:Possible High "Parental Factor"
You must be using windows to try to rip the movie.
I set up a FreeNAS server to share the drive. I then set up a second system to do the conversion.
Both my desktop and the conversion server (Linux) use dvdbackup to backup the dvd to the NAS. I can share it as is, but it takes a lot of space to store the whole backup (4 to 8 gb) So I queue the backup for conversion to xvid/avi on the conversion server. The xvid conversion is done with omgrip http://ogmrip.sourceforge.net/en/index.html
It processes about 10 dvd's a day with no cropping and no down scaling of the movie and the file size fixed at 1024m.
10 dvd's a day? lol...
You must be using a smartphone to rip those movies.
Try a desktop with an i5 or an i7. It takes me exactly 30min to rip a standard length ~90min DVD.
On Windows. Processed to be able to stream to my smartphone or just carry on the 32G chip. That's a 2 step process... it actually only takes 10m to rip the actual DVD to vobs, where I leave most of my collection.
DVDFab to rip to HD. http://www.dvdfab.com/ ~7-11m
At that point I decide if the movie is worth keeping at that format (action movies, or movies with elaborate sets/locations).And if not, I queue up the ones that get turned into avi with Auto Gordian Knot. http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Auto-Gordian-Knot ~15-22m
Go thru 3-4 an hour... should be able to do a small DVD collection in a week, a large collection in a couple or so. But with the price of HD's
now, (flood notwithstanding), no sense really going beyond ripping. Even a pretty extreme DVD collection should be under 5 TB. That's $300.And if you do that you should be able to do even a pretty massive collection in a week.

Re:Why is there still microwave oven interference?
I don't have much experience with this kind of thing but from what I can extrapolate from this wikihow article it's just that some microwaves are poorly designed or are old.
No, It is because it is nearly impossible to eliminate all emissions. WIFI is designed for extreme speed, so receiver sensitivity suffers as a compromise. It doesn't take much power to mess with WIFI. An oven putting out 800 to 1000 Watts is bound to radiate levels above the WIFI receivers sensitivity. -85dBm (typical WIFI sensitivity for acceptable operation) is 3.16E-09 Watts or 3.16 pico Watts. Doesn't take much to mess with it.

Re:Camera Vandalism?
There are a million ways to get rid of a camera, here's a bunch
http://www.wikihow.com/Blind-a-Surveillance-CameraThe problem is that the camera feeds into a security center and say you disable it, you have 30 seconds before the security guard runs outside, if your just looking to vandalize this is acceptable, however security cameras are usually used to secure something rather than spying.
Taking the concept straight out of movies into real life, it is possible to have a camera "loop", but not the way most movie goers imagine it. You'd need 2 things...
a loop that can pass for the regular feed from the camera, very good networking knowledge of the dark side. Also, the camera must have it's own IP, most camera's don't, newer ones mostly do, so you must know what camera it is, this is easier than it sounds. You'd have to use something like ettercap to ARP poison the network, jack the video stream, and replace it with your own. Sounds hard, but really its a combination of ettercap and [video injector software you find yourself].Never tried it, have no reason to, probably never will, 100% theoretically possible, requires a lot of prep work.

Re:Ah wonderful
Mixture of misalignment, single failed headlight (causing the other to receive twice the current) and morons who do it deliberately. Fearing I needed glasses, I went for eyetests when I first started noticing this. Despite the constant attempts by motorists to blind me, it turns out my vision is almost perfect.
I sold my coupe and have been driving trucks for 8 years, this was one of many reasons for the change. I've no rear view yet I still FREQUENTLY have to shield my eyes from reflections in my side mirrors due to misaligned headlights.

Is it really lost?
With all the software out there to help you find lost phones, is it really lost? You figure they would have software to track it all down, especially since it's a prototype. Or don't prototypes have subscriptions to MobileMe for testing? http://www.wikihow.com/Find-a-Lost-iPhone On second thought maybe it is not working fully since it is a prototype. Then again if most of it is working. Humm... I have to continue to think on this one. Although if the person who picks it up keeps the phone off then sure it is lost. It's just funny no other phone maker has had lost phones, and capitalized on it being missing, that I know of. Makes you wonder about testing practices and marketing ploys.

Why the big hoo-haa over privacy?
Most of your information is going to be out there on the internet eventually. Sure, you can take steps to keep most of it private, but really, that soon becomes a full-time job and gets really tiresome.
Eventually, the best thing to do is to realise that it's going to be out there eventually anyway and not try to fight it.
Once you allow this realisation to wash over you, like a cleansing shower, you realise that even with all your information out there, you're still as irrelevant to the great unwashed as you were when your information was private as you now get to hide in plain sight.

http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Apostrophe
Be aware of the its/it's trap. Use an apostrophe with the word "it" only when you want to indicate a contraction for "it is" or "it has." It is a pronoun, and pronouns have their own possessive form that does not use an apostrophe. For example, "That noise? It's just the dog eating its bone." -

Re:Why does anyone use Yahoo Mail?
I did a couple searches thanks to your post and appreciate being closer to my answer.
I have one gmail account but importing twelve years of private Yahoo e-mail into gmail, which has existed a mere five, makes me cringe. Can't allow them to cash in with its advertising partners on a huge data mine for one single user. Yahoo mail never had privacy problems, and you cringe because they're the least flashy one. Good for me. Hotmail and gmail accounts get hacked all the time.
I'll settle for a pst-type Yahoo archive to be saved away from the web and potential advertisers down the road.

Poster link is on a new rearview mirror shape that eliminates blind spots. However, you can already eliminate blind spots by using an alternative configuration for your mirrors:
http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Rearview-Mirrors-to-Eliminate-Blind-Spots
I've reconfigured my mirrors some months ago. It takes some getting used to as you cannot see the side of your car in the mirrors anymore, but this setup absolutely eliminates visibility problems when changing lanes etc.

Use fine sandpaper or even better, a sharpening stone, to create a sharp edge. This edge will be where the vertical edge meets the horizontal surfaces. Not only does sanding increase the chances of your victim being cut but sanded glass is less likely to chip along the edges and has some added strength. sorta source

Can you give me some link to that research? To the best of my knowledge about 5-7 hours is the norm for a typical adult. Not all people need the same amout, but 8-10 is well more than most adults need.
I'm not suggesting you sleep-deprive yourself, I'm suggesting you don't sleep more than you need to. For children and teenagers there are reasons for longer sleep, for an adult it's just a waste of time.
Personally I usually sleep for about 5 hours. Doesn't matter how late or early I go to bed, I always wake well rested in about 5 hours.

Re:Hm...
The lock can only be cut by a diamond saw used by professional thieves...
Are you sure? It looks like your U-lock can simply be popped open with a car jack (probably a Volvo car jack, a truck car jack, or some other brand). The red part might be designed to expand, but I doubt it would hold even if that were the case. You may want to supplement your article with this information (no attribution necessary). In the University town I lived in, this was common knowledge and I doubt that this method of breaking U-locks was restricted to professional thieves.
This is why painting your bike with fluorescent crap, having it registered with your city/police department, and actively using a second lock (of a different type, which is easy to use -- just like your "chip control" lock), is so important. Every layer of protection, however small, helps a little.
Note that you can also purchase bones to fill in the remaining gaps in your U-lock where a would-be thief could stick his car jack in. And I don't know if it's customary in the Netherlands, but in some cities in the US, the police recommends to etch the registration number you got from them into the frame (instead of just using their stickers which can easily be defaced and/or painted over).

Re:GM
Very true. Monsanto and friends have bought off the political side and continue to lobby heavily so that clear labels on GM food are not required - preventing consumers from making an informed choice in the free market. Now as part of this broader campaign of voter/consumer deception, they just need to convince all the consumers that are not paying attention that their products are all A-Ok for consumption - so they trot out people like this Jonathan Jones so called "professor" to use his credentials to sway public opinion.
They have to do this campaign to deceive, since consumers tend to avoid GM Food in droves - just look at how fast McDonald's had to drop GM potatoes from their fries. They may be able to buy politicians and hide their GM labels, but consumers are still a force to be reckoned with, and thanks to the internet - more informed than ever.

Re:Just give us a nameI see you're too lazy to search: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost,_mislaid,_and_abandoned_property#Mislaid_property
Mislaid property
Property is generally deemed to have been mislaid or misplaced if it is found in a place where the true owner likely did intend to set it, but then simply forgot to pick it up again. For example, a wallet found in a shop lying on a counter near a cash register will likely be deemed misplaced rather than lost. Under common law principles, the finder of a misplaced object has a duty to turn it over to the owner of the premises, on the theory that the true owner is likely to return to that location to search for his misplaced item. If the true owner does not return within a reasonable time (which varies considerably depending on the circumstances), the property becomes that of the owner of the premises.
So, quit saying that the law doesn't say that
...Also, the car title example is used in law schools all over the country, so quit saying it's bullshit. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to get title to a car that the person refuses to remove from your parking space.
So, to quote you - "You do realize the law is based on more than just what you think it should be, don't you?" Look in a mirror. All you've provided is what YOU think the law should say. No citations. Your claims are, in your own words, "utter bullshit."
As for housing titles - there are now several cities helping people enforce adverse possession claims to abandoned homes, because they want SOMEONE to be responsible for them. Or are you too much of a feeb to look for that too?

Just disallow execution of avnotify.exe . detailed instructions
-
Re:Uh...Avast?
Registration is easier, but too many false positives ended up scaring me away from Avast, as well as the fact that the free license expires yearly. This prompts a slew of calls from friends and family complaining that either their 'free' Antivirus software is saying they have to pay (it's confusing to the PC challenged and they click the wrong option), or they simply ignore it and hope nothing bad happens. Both ends are undesirable.
I also found the CPU requirements seemed to be creeping up, especially with the last major update. It's starting to be a real issue on older XP era hardware., especially taxing on startup for some reason.
I ended up switching to AntiVir and disabling the launch of the ad that pops up once a day using a policy. Although they only pop up once a day, I still found it irritating. Other than that, it seems lighter weight than Avast, and I haven't heard as many horror stories about false positives trashing my mothers iTunes library and whatnot.

I went to SUNY SB at 16 in the 1980s
I went there for a combination of reasons including boredom, but the biggest single one was one bully who was difficult to deal with. I dealt reasonably successfully with bullies closer to my size, but this one was tougher, captain of the wrestling team, outweighed me by fifty pounds and was two years older, socially connected, showing off to a girlfriend, and so on. It's hard to remember how much in fear for my life I was then (not sure how justified that fear was.) Sometimes walking away towards something better is the best thing you can do when those around you don't or can't help.
http://homeschooling.families.com/blog/bullying-may-be-a-good-reason-to-homeschool
http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/
My Taekwondo instructor showed me how to kill the bully if he ever assaulted me again, but that did not seem like a good idea for multiple reasons, even assuming what the instructor taught was accurate. And I have since studied Aikido which has better ways to handle violence, including redirecting negative energy in more positive ways. Had the bully been the only thing about high school that was a problem, I might have tried harder to get the school to do something else to deal with the situation rather than my leaving, but in general the coursework was not that challenging. I guess that was also before the time of thinking about filing police reports for assaults in schools. Still, looking back from my forties, I can see many ways that I was more of an ass then (e.g. more of a praise-addicted show off and socially oblivious, if generally well meaning) -- not enough to justify bullying and violence if anything does, but certainly enough not to have enough great social connections to prevent bullying on that scale (others were probably afraid of this guy too, and the usual sad story, his father beat him, etc.). Had the teachers in the two classes we shared -- physics and gym -- not been, respectively, burned-out (taking many breaks outside the classroom) and the head of a wrestling team maybe with a chance at some regional competition that year, things might have been different. And while I was smart enough not to try to kill the bully (what a weight to carry), I was not smart enough to make him into a friend.
http://www.wikihow.com/Turn-Enemies-Into-FriendsStill, I had always wanted to go to MIT, and that then did not work out as I had not taken my SATs; Caltech accepted me probably based on my robotics work (including winning a Navy Science Award) and PSATs, but it seemed so far away and expensive and smoggy and earthquakey, so I did not go. So, leaving early essentially cost me a chance to go to MIT, where I had always wanted to go and do robotics. I had never really associated Caltech with robotics (even though I know now they are a great place for that through JPL work).
All the admissions person wanted then at SUNY Stony Brook (leaving in the middle of 11th grade) was proof that you had a B or better GPA. I was disappointed they did not want to see my science fair awards and so on. So, if kids can get into major state universities still, why shunt kids off to community college if they are academically minded? If anything, I think that I would have had an easier time of college starting it even earlier, when I would have been more focused on academics and less on social things and hormones. Maybe academically interested kids should skip high school altogether? Then, by the time hormones kick in, they're off to grad school for their PhD and can date undergrads their age?
:-)With that said, I had a sister who was a residence hall director at SUNY SB, which made it more acceptable (thanks, sis). I also had friends from the chess club and AD&D role playing who had started there the year before. I can see t
