I had this for 3 years already!
Old news - I've had an app like this on my cell phone for the last 3 years, it's called PhoneSecure - http://www.wildpalm.co.uk/PhoneSecure.html

Re:System was dead before it was out the door...
Link?
A quick google search turned up GoBoy for game boy games, but no GBA emulator.
I'd consider an NGage if I could play FFTA or Advance Wars on it.

Re:OK the problem with the ngage
you still have to buy games
Actually, you can get a C64 emulator from here then go to c64.com for whatever game you fancy. Or WildPalm have GB/GBC and Sinclair Spectrum emulators. I bought the former having previously ripped all my GB carts using a Bung Xchanger for the Liberty GB emulator for the PalmOS. I did my remaining GBC carts on the weekend. Or you can download free games (and other software) from my-symbian.com -- It's run all the Series 60 software I've thrown at it so far.Nokia would have down better to bundle it with an archive CD of compatible Series 60 software from somwhere like my-symbian.

Gameboy Cellphones you say?If you have Nokia Symbian phone (like this N-Gage, the 3650, or 7650), check out this free Game Boy emulator.
It's not perfect, but it's still cool to play Super Mario Land on my phone.

The Gameboy emulator is written in C, not JavaHere is the source code for the gameboy emulator for your nokia 3650:
http://www.wildpalm.co.uk/GoBoy/GoBoy7650_12_src.
z ipIt looks to me like it's written in C, not Java. So how does that support your argument that Java on cell phones isn't slow?
Since you're such a big Java fan, why don't you port the Gameboy emulator to Java, and find out first hand how fast it runs and how much memory it requires? Please report back -- it will be very interesting to know how much bigger and slower the Gameboy emulator is, after being rewritten from C to Java. Good luck!

Re:I'll sit this one out...
There's 3 aspects to this though. You can already get Doom for the Nokia 7650, and Quake for the iPaq. So 3D gaming for portables is already here. I've also heard a lot of games developers saying that they are looking at bluetooth to do multiplayer games on mobiles.
As far as wireless broadband goes, (and this is probably massive flamebait), but it does amuse me how far behind the US is compared to the rest of the world on this. Already in the UK, GPRS is enabling up to 33,6k (or even maybe 56k, I'm not totally sure) for mobile phones. Which may not sound a lot, but in my experience 56k is plenty enough bandwidth for web browsing. And on the form factor of a mobile phone it's probably enough for streaming video.
The only technology that is currently not available is the AI Avatar. To be honest I agree with the rest of the posts on here, after initial amusement that would just get plan irritating.
I personally think that the best mobile technology to come out recently (after bluetooth) is the video phones that have just come on sale. Right now though it seems that no single device has the 3d gaming ability, bluetooth, videophone, PDA abilities. Lots of devices have some of these (plus some other useless crap) but nothing seems to completely fit the bill. Which is pretty cool because manufacturers are trying out lots of new ideas. I think in twelve months we are going to have an absolutely rocking mobile platform as the gimmicks fall by the wayside and the good ideas converge into the mainstream. Well, in the UK anyway. :) -
Re:Doom sort of...
IF you got for a Nokia 7650 (which is Sybian ER6 as the P800 is ER7) then you can actually get Doom

Nearly!
It's been available for the 7650 for quite some time now.

Nokia 7650
There is also a port to the Nokia 7650 avilable. I've not tried it myself yet but it looked playable on my mates phone
I don't think playing it with sound on the train would be such a great idea and it looks like a really good way to bring a premeture end to the navigation joystick on the phone!

Games on tiny screens?
BTW, DOOM is already available for the Symbian OS!
I've tried it on my Nokia 7650 and it works fine. Ofcourse its a tad difficult running backwards shooting when some monster's trying to blast ur head off, but its fun.
Point is, take heed of phones like the Sony Ericsson P800 - Samsung's already coming out with a CDMA phone with the form factor of the P800. IMO, phones now will look like that ONLY.
As for me, i'm an Indian, and what Reliance has managed to do is nothing short of amazing. Its not just the phone market that they are into, but also as an ISP. The backbone optical network will also be carrying data to desktops.
As for the rates, it may sound impossibly cheap to you guys, but its gonna happen - they might increase them in the future, but the benefits are always going to be there. As for the other cell phone operators in the country (Orange, BPL, Airtel, AT&T etc) they must be shitting in their pants. -
Doom on your phone...
Now you can download Doom for your Nokia 7650
:)
It works fairly well although the controls are a bit awkward.
My fondest memory of playing Doom was getting to the end and recording what the last boss said into a tape recorder, sampling it back in to the PC and then reversing it so I could understand what was said :D -
PDA no, cell phone with PDA functionality, yesI tried a traditional Windows CE PDA, but stopped using it after a while. Too bulky, too heavy, too much hassle.
I used my cell phone (Nokia 7110) instead, just to keep track of phone numbers and jot down notes. Then I got my Nokia 7650. I carry around a cell phone all day anyway, but this phone also doubles as a very capable PDA. I can even play Doom on it.
The classic PDAs are converging with cell phones to create a new class of devices that people actually do carry around and use everyday. The sheer volume of phones produced by the likes of Nokia and Sony Ericsson will ensure that prices will continue to fall, the devices will become smaller and more capable and the traditional PDAs will morph into cell phones or disappear.

Re:Games!
You can already get Nokia phones with Civilization and Doom...
-
Re:Don't even think about buying one.
Your post is blatant flamebait
... and you took the bait then and on top of that reply with flamebait yourself?
Seriously, what you describe is not a problem with cell phones per se but with the applications. As an example, with the new Symbian-based phones, the business model is cleary to have an open platform for which anybody can develop apps. Or port something really useful. -
Re:Doom for 7650!Better is to get it for free: Wild Palm.
It works quite well, but is a bit buggy. Once they sort out the Bluetooth 2 or more player version, then it will be good. Shame it uses up most of the memory though, I need to be able to take photos as well.

Re:Ahead of their time
You can already play Doom on the Nokia 9210. Full-colour, full-screen, and faster than I remember it originally playing on a 486. And if that doesn't turn your phone into a games console, I don't know what does.
