Re:Torn
In case I wasn't clear with my above post. This is the physical version of what I'm talking about.

Not yet replicated [Re:But...]
It is unlikely to be real but your claim that the error level is higher than the measured effect is AFAIK wrong. We also have replication in 3 separate places with separate groups of people using different hardware which reduces some error sources.
No, sorry, but I will challenge that last statement. There are three separate groups which have produced different results which are inconsistent with each other.
Most recently, the NASA Johnson "Eagleworks" group has tried to replicate both the EM drive proposed by Shawer and a result on a similar concept in China claimed by Yang-- and falsified both of these results. The EM drive proposal stated that the purported drive worked because of a specific asymmetry, but the Eagleworks test showed that the result was the same whether or not the asymmetry is present: the Shawer driver does not work as proposed. They also tested the Yang result, and got a result... but the result was orders of magnitude different than the claimed Yang result. The net answer is that neither result was replicated.
Also, the test that was reported at a conference was not done in vacuum (although they only mentioned this detail in the "further work" section of their paper.) There has been a post to an internet forum saying that they have now tested it in vacuum, and gotten yet different results-- but internet forums are not scientific publications.
I'm in favor of good experimental work testing these ideas... but so far, it's way premature to suggest that the results have been replicated. They're not. The results are very, very small, and no two experiments seem to show the same thing.
Here's a Wired article from last year (which was the last anybody heard anything new) with some more discussion. (Sorry it's in Wired, which apparently everybody hates now, but that's where it is.) http://www.wired.com/2015/05/n...

Re:And there you are...
Let's see... FBI takes over Onion servers, supposedly paid universities for "research", managed to find the operator to silk road 2.0, and managed a rather large bust of criminals. Then you've got the issue of "fake tor clients"... Seems to me that considering tor (be it with a VPN before or after) is really irrelevant and that the underlying technology of tor has just been under attack for two long and needs to be replaced.

Re:Could the FBI hide behind 3rd party code?
Yeah, the court seems to be following the same line of reasoning which got the source code for breathalyzers released.
It's too bad for the FBI since it turns their tactic into a one-trick pony. But I believe the strategy around that in the gangster days was to not use the testimony of the stool pigeon directly in court against a suspect. Rather, use the info learned to set up other stings which would generate enough evidence to charge the suspect. Then they wouldn't have to reveal who their inside source was. -
Re:I'm not sure what conclusions to draw from here
I'm drawing two conclusions from this:
1) Exposing yourself to cold doesn't seem to be a viable weight loss strategy. This actually makes sense since the best response to be being cold is adding insulation, either way trying to lose weight by making yourself cold is apparently a thing.
2) Probiotics may be overrated. Its true they're really critical to regulating body weight but it looks like the body has already figured that out. As much as you're eating yogurt to push the culture one way your body may be trying to push it somewhere else.
-
Re:I can see it now...
Wiredhas a much better article about what's going on with this order, they say that 1. the order leaves open the possibility that what the court is asking isn't possible, and 2. that the FBI isn't specifically asking Apple to unlock the phone but wants Apple to disable the feature that wipes the phone after 10 bad password attempts (they want to brute-force it).
-
Re:perspective.
Tor was developed by American spooks at the US Naval Research Laboratory, nimrod. It can be penetrated by the NSA anytime they choose. Please make sense before posting. The only morality police in America are the ones on campus.

Re:Two things:
Google's pet AI just got good at Go, a feat considered insurmountable for current AIs until, well, it happened.
And the kicker is, it wasn't even programmed to play Go.
I'm no longer so sure that general-purpose AI capable of self-taught complex problem solving is decades away...

Re:$52/yr is a lot for a subscription
It's just weird that the $19.99 also includes a "free digital subscription". I've taken marketing / advertising / promotion college classes, so I would expect them to push this something like this: Digital Only: $52 per year
Print and Digital: $19.99 per year
SAVE $32.01, and get a FREE HAT! -
Re:I will probably subscribe
$1 per week is not that great a deal, considering they already sell a 2 year subscription, website and print, for $30. Plus you get a hat.
-
Re:$52 a YEAR?
Damn, that's pretty expensive. A print + online subscription for the magazine is only $19.99, AND a free hat (!). Did someone in their marketing department just fail at basic math, or is this some experiment in psychological marketing?
Nope, that's pretty standard. It's $52/yr for a subscription, but if you give them your name and home address and let them mail you the ads, they'll give you a $33 discount. Numbers of dead tree subscribers are the old standard for selling ads that has been replaced with page hits and tracking, and probably still worth a lot more to them.

The plug-in Disable Anti-Adblock works great on Forbes, I'm betting it will also work on Wired.

Re:Oops
Wired has been declining in quality articles for some time. Lately their webpage has been an ugly mess as well.
This.
I was a daily reader until their mobile-first (read: "mobile-only") redesign in March 2015. It's not as atrocious as it was in March 2015, but it's still pretty bad.
And the clickbait. http://www.wired.com/2016/02/its-been-20-years-since-this-man-declared-cyberspace-independence/
Really. You couldn't put John Perry Barlow's fucking name in the headline? Must everything be of the form "This X did
..." without naming X? I'm surprised they didn't write it as "7 REASONS why it's been THIS MANY years since THIS MAN did THIS THING that will BLOW YOUR MIND" -

Maybe Wired needs new management.
Wow! From the Wired story: "For $1 a week, you will get complete access to our content, with no display advertising or ad tracking."
From $0 to $52 per year, in one jump? Maybe Wired needs new management.
"Wait for AdBlock subscriptions to be updated with rules that bypass Wired's ad-blocking blocking."
Exactly. Ad-blockers can pretend to download the ads, but not show the ads. Not detectable by a web site.
I just saw a Wired ad. To me, it was deeply offensive. To sustain a woman's interest, a man should give her things that cost a lot of money? -
AWS Sticker Shock: The Dark Side of the Cloud
Technically the cloud is fun tech, but remember the good old days when you would rent a non-scalable server, stick it in a server room and hope you did and didn't get slashdotted?
Problem with the cloud is you never know what your monthly bill is going to be. You can get a real shock and it is hard to budget because of that. Understanding those bills is itself a major drama and you forever have to keep running and checking nothing is ratcheting up costs. Even keeping a few gig of hard drive space adds up, even though Google can offer you gigs for "free" no problems. http://readwrite.com/2013/10/1... http://searchcloudcomputing.te... http://insights.wired.com/prof...
So why don't AWS offer fixed billing? For the same reason your cellular company doesn't. :-( -
Re:Sick
I have friends who get nauseous simply from the head bobbing in minecraft.
There are a lot of people who get nauseous from VR.
There are a lot of people who get headaches from VR.It's still a very real thing
http://www.wired.com/2015/04/r...Unless you are a person that gets sick from VR or have formally studied it, I don't think you can speak to that with even as a good a basis in reality as the parent poster.

Re:Okay...Yeah, it's true that Assange spread this misinformation, the same Assange convinced Snowden to flee to Russia instead of S. America.
But, it doesn't change the fact that *some one* forced to ground and searched airplane of a PRESIDENT of a country by that information. Assange use this misinformation to prove the fact that (reposted):The story, by Greg Miller, recounts daily meetings with senior officials from the FBI, CIA, and State Department, all desperately trying to come up with ways to capture Snowden. One official told Miller: “We were hoping he was going to be stupid enough to get on some kind of airplane, and then have an ally say: ‘You’re in our airspace. Land.’ ” He wasn’t. And since he disappeared into Russia, the US seems to have lost all trace of him.

It's possible to win a coin toss with practice
With practice you can win a coin toss most of the time.

Apparently they had 8 billion other reasons.
Microsoft has a long history of buying tech. By the time they get version 3 fixed, they are chasing some other fad.

Slashdot has reached a new low
Sorry, the link embedded within the article is http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/01/nsa-gchq-used-open-source-software-to-spy-on-israeli-syrian-drones/, which is a link relevant to the previous story. I have no idea how that would happen, but editors should at least check the links. The correct link is actually http://www.wired.com/2016/01/nsa-hacker-chief-explains-how-to-keep-him-out-of-your-system/.
