Re:But what of the long term value?
Doom, Quake, and Descent were playable online through software like Kali which allowed you to run IPX over a dial-up connection with a DOS PPP Packet Driver:

They already did...
Time-Warner bought Atari before their death and renamed them Time Warner Interactive...
Time Warner Interactive was probably best remembered for Rise of the Robots Rise2: Resurection (the sequel of the former) and Primal Rage...
Of course all of these were fighting games, but they did a few that weren't fighting games...however, their games were infamous for their suckitude...even those games that had fans (like ROTR) were nothing more than eye candy (no real playability)...however, this was honestly close to the end for the origonal Atari... -
Doonesbury actually had a game way back when
Well, its funny that the post mentions SimCanidate. The only game I remember was the EXCELLENT and exceptional Doonesbury Elecection Game Campaign '96. Read about it here and here. The game itself was fun if you were a political junkie but it did have its own quirks.
I personally loved the game because of my love for doonesbury (you could have doonesbury characters as part of your campaign team). Bonus features of the game were video clips of classic US political incidents in the past 50 years. Highlites of debates, tv commericals, Dan Quale snafus. The game is most enjoyable for people who like to follow politics and I am guessing that the lack of interest might be why there wasn't a 2000 version. You can still find copies on eBay and I hear that some poli sci professors still obsess for a copy.
The doonesbury model itself is pretty eceptional covering a broad range of '96 topics and a huge array of canidates. The real difficulty with a political sim is the emulation of political dissent and sentiment (get people out to vote, create a better 'image' and getting points for well coordinated events (al gore's 65 year old medicare patient for example). you can even hire duke to do 'dirty work' and create smear campaigns. overall i would recomend the game but I still have a hard time seeing my gf play it over rollercoaster tycoon 2 or the sims. -
Oddly named products
I do actually have a copy of the Microsoft Wine Guide sitting on my desk.
I did a double-take when I saw it at the library.
(It's not on Microsoft's site anymore, but the first Google hit was a review of it). -
Re:Dumb.
I used to buy this argument, but I don't anymore.
(Note on the last one, I purchased that once for $2 just for Beamrider, which remains a truly awesome game.)
Of course it need not be a "threat to civilization", it need only harm a bottom line, and the argument can be made that it indeed may. (Note a lot of old stuff is coming out for the Gameboy Advance, for instance; I purchased the Phantasy Star Collection recently, and I am pleased. What I'd really like is the Bard's Tale on the GBA, though. If it weren't for the infernal need to make money that would be a cool development project to undertake. -
Re:playing directly from cd
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure already did this, it ran totally from the cd.
A litte info I found about it -
Re:I thought the original was cool..One sequel, "Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure" was released several years ago. It was a standard platformer, with some very nice graphics for the time. It was notable for being one of the very first action games to run inside of Windows.
A new sequel, Pitfall 3D was released very recently. I don't know much about it.

Best I could find.
And in that case, wouldn't it be a "Hunnypot"? -
Re:Yes, damn that Mozart!
Try this link for Mozart's musical dice game as a CGI program, along with the rules and a bit of background on the whole thing.
Enjoy :-)
