Re:People who are naturally interested in programm
I've heard the stories and then saw this BBC show or something about a family that had to live with 80 gadgets, and i was sorta amazed how the the two boys just sat there and figured shit out.
I had the same reaction. Oddly enough, it was the "salesman" teaching the boy a few of the basics of programming that convinced the family to select the BBC Micro over the ZX Spectrum! Later in the episode, the boy brings a friend home from school to play at writing computer programs. (Both kids are eagerly searching the manual!).
That's something we've lost in this modern age. That blinking cursor just invited you to create. Even today, it can spark a child's imagination; the novelty of the home computer in the 80's doesn't seem to enter in to it at all.
For anyone interested, the program was called Electric Dreams and took the family through the 70's 80's and 90's one day at a time. The segment with the micro is from the 80's and can be found on youtube.

Would you jam this call?

Re:I wish they'd put them in theatres
I agree with the sentiment, but not the extreme response of installing jammers. Far better to publicly humiliate the inconsiderate fuck and toss his ass out the door. That's why I patronize The Alamo Draft House cinemas exclusively now. They don't tolerate rude behavior.

Copying
I was just watching the Developer's Preview. They were touting "a new kind of copying files
... you don't have to copy files to your hard drive anymore, they can just stay in the cloud".Well how nice! Why have the tedium of being sure your files will be there when you go for them, when you can suddenly become dependent upon a third-party service? It's not like they've ever ratcheted up the price on their customers before.
I'm just waiting for them to abandon the hard drive entirely, in favor of a coin slot. Using your computer will be just like internet video poker.

Re:Oh Frack!
There are quite a few CNG stations and there are more and more being built every day... Here's an iphone/android app that will find one for you:
http://www.cngnow.com/app/Pages/information.aspxAlso, here is a standard webpage that lists all CNG stations in the USA:
http://www.cngnow.com/stations/Pages/information.aspxYou don't have to have a special refueling card to pump CNG, that is just a requirement by that one PG&E facility... There are public CNG fueling stations. You don't need a class, it is pretty easy. If you can operate a propane tank for your gas grill, you can fill up your vehicle. Here is a youtube video that shows how easy it is: http://youtu.be/W8FkcG64Gtk
Thanks!

Re:WD Live
It's the one linked in the parent to my post.
These are the older ones:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136916
The old interface: http://youtu.be/NQdSLOhrVMcThe new interface is in the my previous post. You can also see the size of the remotes in the postings. The newer version's remote is twice the size of the old one. It's not perfect since I wish that it had a qwerty keypad that flipped out. Also, the colored buttons on the new remote are a little confusing to know which to push. But trial and error wins out.
-
Re:WD Live
Yeah, not sure why they didn't include this. The 2011 version is much better over the previous models and it plays anything you throw at it. The 2011 versions has a MUCH better UI, remote control, and has WiFi. Here is one review:
Note on how the looks are different from previous models. Don't bother with the older models since the UI is that much better.
I plug this into my car's DVD player, put a dozen or so kids movies on a flash drive, and let the kids watch what they want on long trips. No more fumbling for DVD's.
Looking at the specs of the others I don't know why this isn't included.

Re:Mac interface VASTLY improved
I hope they haven't taken away the option to have the playlist in a separate window. I do performances of nerdy songs about science where I have backing video and music being played on VLC player. The video goes through the projector and the playlist is on my Windows laptop screen. It would be an annoyance if that modus operandi had been taken away for me.

Re:This is impossible
Actually that is incorrect, computers were used for fire control on naval ships long before that, they were mechanical analog computers, but computers nonetheless.
See this US Navy training film from 1953 http://youtu.be/_8aH-M3PzM0
The need to make them small enough and light enough to put into a spacecraft brought about some major developments, but they existed long before that.

Re:Frak!
I understand the point you are making, and I'm old enough and cynical enough to suspect that there is more than just a grain of truth in your argument. Like I said above, I tend to be idealistic although I recognize that when actually putting something in place, it is rare indeed when you can actually implement an ideal -- you've got to be pragmatic and realistic enough to allow for how things work in the real world, so I agree that a pure Libertarian state would probably not work out real well. We are going to need some level of government interference to make a workable society.
However, I disagree that a reasonably Libertarian society is unworkable. What we have NOW is unworkable. Those with money and power already trample the rights of everyone else. Regulation isn't a cure-all in our current situation because those with money and power already buy off the regulators (go look up how Merck, IIRC, lobbied the FDA to fast-track the HPV vaccine for a good example of that) and out-spend the little guy in court.
My view of a Libertarian ideal is pretty simple, really. A friend and coworker expressed it best: "Democrats want to be your mommy. Republicans want to be your daddy. I just want them all to treat me like an adult." This same guy forwarded a YouTube video that explains it in a little more detail: The Philosophy of Liberty. In other words, enough government to create a stable society and no more. I'm not arguing for anarchy, and I'm not saying that the government should never interfere, but I am saying that the level of government interference should be orders of magnitude less than what it is now, particularly on social issues like drug usage, same-sex marriage, polygamy, etc. despite the fact that I am strictly monogamous, straight and have never used any recreational drug stronger than alcohol (sparingly) or caffeine (not so sparingly). -

Re:In perspective
The problem I see with your argument is that we are not doing any real space exploration. We are not sending people to mars, or building a moon station, or mining asteroids. We are only doing recreational travels to low earth orbit.
I am sure that there are many people who would accept risking their lives in other to set foot on Mars. Unfortunately it seems we are retreating from Space.
The Earth will inevitably perish. If not by our own actions, or by some tragic natural disaster; the Sun will simply die out. To have a chance to survive we must face space exploration.
