The German companies do it a bit different than American companies, they pool resources for the common R&D good. It's why they had stuff like CAN bus while Ford and GM were all developing their own unique busses.

BMW, VW and Benz all have a lot of research into this. I sat in on a grad seminar given by VW engineers back in 2010 on lane change obstacle avoidance. They certainly have the IP already, even if they aren't announcing it state side. They even have ISO standards for how to test obstacle avoidance: ISO 3888-2:2011 defines the dimensions of the test track for a closed-loop, severe lane-change manoeuvre test for subjectively determining the obstacle avoidance performance of a vehicle, one specific part of vehicle dynamics and road-holding ability. It is applicable to passenger cars as defined in ISO 3833 and light commercial vehicles up to a gross vehicle mass of 3,5 t.

If there is any group of car companies that is going to give you autonomous driving with manual over ride it's going to be the German ones. German drivers also have a different mentality towards driving. Driving falls into two categories, either you have to do it and you can automate it or you want to do it and you don't want to automate it. I would say of my driving there's a good 80/20 split. 80% of the time I'd like the car to just get me somewhere but 20% of the time I do want an autobahn experience.

The TÜV doesn't mess around when it comes to safety or testing and I trust anything they verify much more than the DOT.

I recall reading a year or so ago about one of the founders of a tracking company. He says the sheer amount of shadow profiles on people are staggering. He said if gathering and collating this data were ever to be taken very seriously by anyone in power, the average person would be screwed. A good portion of the country just sucks to crow crops. Poor soil, terrain, and climate conditions just make it impractical to grow crops in a significant amount.

For the parts that can grow crops, economic sanctions have had their effect to. Having very limited access to commercial pesticides, fertilizers, petroleum products, and electricity for irrigation results in significantly lower crop yields than what a modern farm would yield. Add in severe natural disasters, lack of diversity in crops, shitty seed, etc and you have a recipe for the current agriculture conditions.

Plus it's just hard to grow plaster fruits and veggies.

Alternatively, maybe it wasn't that he felt he needed immunity, but he just didn't want to talk. Without immunity, he could always just plead the fifth, saying that he didn't want to talk on the grounds that he might incriminate himself (see previous point... he doesn't actually have to believe he did anything wrong for it to be the case that he might incriminate himself). By granting him immunity, the DoJ removes his ability to refuse to testify. If he won't tell them what he knows now, they'll haul him in front of the judge and have him up on contempt charges.

How fucked-up a "justice" system is that?

I don't see how any system could be significantly different in this respect without being worse. The laws and regulations could be simpler, which could make it easier to know if you've committed a crime, but, as the ultimate example in that video I linked points out, that really doesn't matter. Something which is absolutely true and could not possibly incriminate you could still cause you trouble in court (see 21:35 in the video).

Salary transparency is a good idea and it can make gender or racial discrimination more difficult. But what does that have to do with eliminating salary negotiation? Employees (new or old) could still negotiate based on their worth to the company. And transparency would mean that everyone would know what their salary was. So everyone could judge whether the employee was worth what they were being paid. It would be possible for each worker to determine if they were being short-changed because a less talented or less hard-working employee was being paid more. That is exactly the information that is necessary to engage in principled and informed negotiations. And preventing that knowledge is exactly what companies like to do to prevent informed negotiations.

Exactly, salary transparency has nothing to do with salary negotiation. Knowing everyone's salary doesn't mean you still can't negotiate your salary. In fact, usually after it's all public, people start negotiating.

The only reason we don't have it is threefold. First, most companies disallow it because keeping salaries secret benefits them. Second, it's cultural - people would rather talk about their sex lives than money (this is an American thing). Third, it's rooted in the fear that if everyone knows what they're paid, they may face a salary cut because they may be overpaid compared to everyone else.

#3 is a false belief - it turns out employees don't feel like someone is overpaid and call for their salary to be cut, but rather they are underpaid and begin negotiations for a raise.

AC the "revoke" issue wont work to try and keep it for "one" physical. The request is for code that is on a drive that is given to the US gov. The computer code can then be used to open product lines at a state and federal level.
The code as a method on a computer hard drive is been conscripted for a generation of phones, not one physical phone.

I've read his book "The Elegant Universe". He's very much into string theory, his description of gravity and it's ability to transverse dimensions explains dark matter to me - right or wrong I'm comfortable with my understanding of it. It's best described in the DVD's that comes with the book. The book itself is easy reading and the library normally carries it.

But it's the 8 episode series season 1 of "How the Universe works" narrated by Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs) I've watched untold times, it puts me to sleep at night :) it's Mike's voice, knocks me right out. and the series does indeed explain how the Universe works, I've learned much from it. Perhaps support for autonomous vehicles is not so much about believing autonomous vehicles are failsafe, but that autonomous vehicles are safer than human drivers. Human drivers are notoriously bad at driving. We don't really have the perception necessary to drive, as as this video shows, where many people won't be able to count the number of passes successfully. Quite frankly, our brains tend not to have the capability to accurately perceive the world around us.
