Re:Dumbasses
No, they were doing a news report on how well the Waymo cars actually drive, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. You can see a summary (including the police stop) here. The basic summary: they're good at stopping for threats, but they suck at lane changes and some turns. Despite being in a tightly geofenced area (aka, the cars are "trained to the test"), they found one left turn which the cars could never manage to take without human intervention.
It's understandable that people would be upset if they see the cars as bad drivers. You don't have to invoke motives that people see them as a "threat to their future" when the people are literally telling you that they're upset with how the cars drive.
-
The reason you're not seeing competition
is because capital costs and profit margins are too high. That sounds like a contradiction, and that's the trouble. Like a lot of things it doesn't work the way you'd expect it to.
Let's say you decide to compete with Comcast. You're gonna have to spend billions of your own dollars on infrastructure. You might be tempted because Comcast charges $100-$140/mo for something that costs maybe $10-$15/mo to actually provide. You could, over time, do it for $50/mo and make a killing.
Except Comcast knows this. They can and will drop their price to $20/mo and still make good money. Meanwhile you need to charge $50/mo for a decade or more to cover the interest on the loans you took out to finance all that infrastructure you built.
The real problem here is you're trying to put a square peg into a round hole. We _all_ want telecommunications. It's as essential and valuable as food and water. We couldn't live without it. Our civilization would collapse without the ability to spread information. For one thing we couldn't make enough food.
When something's that important and that universal you stop letting private corporations handle it. That's why we have a post office. But don't take my word for it, here's a much better list of the reasons not to privatize industries and how to tell the difference between something that belongs in the public and something that should be private. -
Re:You were told nothing of the sort
Not true. Community Reinvestment Act was never about making loans to people with bad credit. The "regulations being ignored" started 2002 by George W. Bush:

Re: What ratings?
Personally I don't understand the supposed SJW themes that are on the show.
But this last season has just been dreadful with the plots: boring, stupid, no actual humour or clever writing.
I really grow to hate the term SJW. It's an excuse to be lazy and tag something with a name to avoid having to consider anything on a deeper level. Basically its the same script repeated endlessly through the ages. To destroy something, you first redefine it to be less than it really is, then attack the easier target.
I've not seen the last year or two of Doctor Who. I'll watch it at some point, thought I agree that plot is the thing they have most lost. As a counterpoint, Babylon 5 had more plot than most comparable shows, which made it great to stand the test of time, but less so to keep people interested, cause if you miss something, then your lost.
For Doctor Who, the best companion of the ones I recall would have to be Sara Jane. The best doctor, well probably the fourth, though Christopher Eccleston was good too. The worst was probably that spoiled brat Turlough. The Brigadier was also excellent as were Donna and Rose.
One thing that stood out with the Bridadier was an episode where the bad guy asked, "Pitiful. Can this world do no better than you as their champion?" "Probably. I just do the best I can." link
Too many times new scifi seems to be about scifi solutions to problems. That is okay sometimes, but most problems are about people not engineering. Quite often the solutions are there, but the weak humans need to be the ones to make the hard choices. Sometimes the hero should be the little guy, not the giant.

Re:The Lesson
Except, it did not show that at all.
Except it did. I've looked into it in detail, read both sides of the argument, and everything I said is true.
Pointing to it as an example of the "dishonesty" of the vast majority of researchers is pretty disingenuous.
The researchers involved were heavy hitters and proponents of the "hockey stick", the widely promulgated graph of global warming.
"The EPA notes that in fact, the evidence shows that the research community was fully aware of these issues and that no one was hiding or concealing them."
I tried looking up the citation for Wikipedia's claim here, and the direct link did not work. I would like to see an exact quote from the reference that backs up this claim.
Regardless, there's a political climate around propping up the threat of global warming, and a lot of whitewashing going around. Rather than rely on Wikipedia or summaries, I looked at primary sources. I looked at the graphs, the emails, and what, exactly, "hide the decline" referred to.
I looked at how Phil Jones told people to delete email. How he said would rather delete data than give it to climate skeptics. At how the internal debates regarding the uncertainties of climate science was not communicated to the wider public. Quite the opposite, it was actively hidden.

Re:Stopped Watching After Capaldi
Ahhh yes, pretend its because of "wamens" and not the fact that its gotten more preachy than a Baptist church on a Sunday...uh huh.
The word you are looking for is NOT misogynist, its Anvilicious which is what the SJW plague has sadly done to much Sci/Fi, See Star Wars and Star Trek for just 2 examples. People want to be entertained, not preached to with all the subtlety of getting hit upside the head with a brick and as we have seen with everything from CBS not being able to get a plug nickel for the rights to ST:D overseas (boy is those initials apropos) to the piles of Last Jedi Blu-ray stinking up the cheap bins in the Wally World people are sick and tired of it and are just walking away.
The majority of the fans didn't give a crap if the Doctor switched genders, hell he's switched personalities every single time he regenerated (and if anything what annoyed me and a lot of others is that they ignored they were dealing with an ALIEN that had spent 8000+ years in one type of body so there should have been more dispassionate examination of the new form, things like lack of reach being a downside while agility being a positive, that sort of thing) but instead it just got more and more preachy and "look at how woke we are!" like the 12th Doctor in the Xmas special constantly saying to the first "You can't say that"...dude you are a fucking ALIEN TIME TRAVELER who has saved the earth countless times, quit prostrating yourself like a fucking cuck! A simple "I was a bit of an arrogant ass when I was a kid" since the first Doctor in the canon is literally an infant compared to the extreme age of the 12th would have sufficed, but...nope, gotta drop them anvils...ugh.
But as others noted luckily we have decades of Doctor Who were they cared about good stories and fun instead of bating you upside the head with their politics so like Star Trek and Star Wars let it die, good riddance.

I'll believe it when they find pieces of the drone embedded in the nosecone or find LiPo residue. There is a disturbing fervor regarding the "dangers" of drones at the moment that can result in some hilarious/disturbing claims about their capabilities/risks. I have literally had family members believe that the palm sized quad-copter I have is going to chop off their fingers, and police have made some outlandish claims that were later proven to be demonstrably false.

Re:JFC...
Windows dominance in the next 10 years is another question. It might indeed die a painful death and be replaced with Chrome/Fuchsia OS or something similar. But this doesn't exempt from the fact that GNU/Linux is a failure on desktop which is mainly due to fragmentation, bugs and lack of backward/forward compatibility. Even Linus Torvalds (the creator of Linux kernel) agreed in a recent interview that GNU/Linux is a failure on desktop.

It's about on par with the damage you see from bird strikes, and they weigh about the same. The difference being that birds are mostly soft pieces of meat which compress to absorb energy and bounce off, while drones are made of hard components which concentrate their energy into a smaller surface area and can thus penetrate further.
Odds are it's a bird strike, not a drone strike. There are something like a hundred billion birds aloft at any give time, while there are probably only a few tens of thousand of drones aloft at any given time. And there have been bird strikes before which left little to no organic matter. Not saying a drone strike can't happen, just that a plane is much more likely to hit a bird. -

Re:Yes, sometimes you get this form Amazon
I worked at Tim's growing up (prominent Canadian coffee shop, for you internationals) and we'd throw out large amounts of food/donuts at the end of the day. These were still very much edible for at least another day. (Trust me... they were.)
My first job was at McDonald's. The story there was pretty much the same: food that sat around too long (10 minutes for burgers, 7 minutes for fries, etc.) was "QC'd" by dumping it in a bucket, which then made its way to the trash periodically.
One time, someone made the comment that we were throwing out so much stuff and I just had to ask, "Hey why don't these go to folks who actually need some food?" and the answer was simple; they can't risk the lawsuits if someone gets sick.
I was told pretty much the same thing.
Skip forward ~30 years, and now there's this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogOJwTdJJ3c
If only this could be more widespread. Basically, excess food off the serving line is flash-frozen and stored until needed.
(Disclaimer: I work for Catholic Charities nowadays, though not in the dining hall. My opinions are mine, not theirs.)
