Re:and so i announce my plan to prioritize traffic
-
conserve your bandwidth the smart way.
as in this foul year of our lord 2016 bandwidth is apparently as limited as rations during the great war, Ive a few tips to preserve what little interactivity many of us have with the internet.
1. use adblock and noscript to prevent wasteful and potentially dangerous content from hijacking your limited resources.
2. null-route known advertisement servers. in a traditional model of internet access, content is sponsored and supplemented with advertisements. However, due to Americas constrained bandwidth and limited access to choice of provider many will have to go without advertisements. These servers are simply too wasteful and prevent a timely rendering of normal content.
3. Use torrents as they maximize efficient and quick access to content. netflix may fail to properly render, and other streaming services may include advertising content thats simply too costly to render for american internet users. Whereas torrents can be downloaded and stored for repeat access without delay or cap.
4. Make sure to avoid cloud services that can require access to high bandwidth internet that might not be available in your market. -
caps? time to trim the fat.
Once Time Warner introduced a data cap on my broadband service, I instituted several efficiency improvements on my network. Im certain most ISP's will understand, after all, many of these are just content throttling to improve my user experience.
1. Null routing known advertisers: Its a fact of life, that many advertisers cause a strain on my network by utilising far more bandwidth than they should. If advertisers wish to continue, they can purchase additional bandwidth from me or enroll in my advertiser affiliate program for a nominal monthly fee.
2. Ad blocking software: ublock, and noscript are used to help curtail loading flash, tracking, or advertisements that some websites feature. these services also prevent downloading injected advertisements by my network provider (see affiliate program for more information.) 3. torrents: Netflix and hulu use an inefficient protocol in many cases compared to torrents and magnet links. I can watch the same video or listen to the same song at my leisure, whenever I feel like it, without reaching the cap or limit imposed by my provider. -

Re:Well no shit, Sherlock
Google blocks AdAway and is working much harder to prevent root. This jailing of the user is meant to force the use of the app store which allows them to monetize personal data (being "scrubbed" (year right)) and targeted marketing.
When apps that help to truly make your experience secure ( such as adaway that use fdroid and require root) by blocking horrible ads, scumware, malware, and other trash used by marketing on the internet.
I use various lists just on hosts via android and dns creating blackhole zones with these lists:
https://adaway.org/hosts.txt
http://adaway.sufficientlysecu...
http://hosts-file.net/ad_serve...
https://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers...
http://sysctl.org/cameleon/hos...
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ho...
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp200...
http://someonewhocares.org/hos...Fanboy has some good lists as well
A lot of these lists are not for blocking ads but for blocking really bad content from coming into your browsing experience.
When Google and Apple actively prevent me from cleaning up this rubbish on a device I own and they kill all apps that attempt to do any of this and they remove all the hooks from the OS to allow us to do this its really a poor situation.
Now I have to worry about fdroid going away while Google claims this is a fight against amazon - scamazon. As much as I dislike Bezos and Scamazon and want Google to keep them with a better offering, banning 3rd party appstores and apps is a bad idea because its the only way we can bypass the draconian and ridiculous "rules" the official rules of either Apple or Google app stores force on developers. There are a lot of useless apps out there but they have banned many useful ones because they conflict with their interests and not with safety or security.

Re:To refine the question, with subquestions
Besides the someonewhocares list, I've used the yoyo list with dnsmasq for years, on a cron job updating every 2 weeks or so. http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/...

Re:Need a good HOSTS file
See also: http://someonewhocares.org/hos... http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/... (not hosts formatted: https://spam404bl.com/spam404s... and http://mirror2.malwaredomains.... ) I'm using a shell script to aggregate those into a blacklist used by dnsmasq for my LAN (altough it is somewhat discouraging to see how often my android devices tries to phone home when on my wifi).
-
the whole argument is moot.
whether it existed or not, recent common carrier reform from the FCC made it sacrosanct. You cant cap, shape, hijack, or rate limit internet. Carriers are toeing a dangerous line by continuing to experiment with pre-2015 policy as though no reform had ever happened.
Until the big penalties start rolling in, i suggest taking back as much bandwidth as you can. noscript and adblock get the job done, but you can also null-route known advertisers servers and subnets. http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/
If youre running internet in a household with more than one person in it, strict firewalls are also a good way to prevent random windows bloatware from phoning home or gobbling data without your consent. -
Way out of hellLuckily there are several simple solutions to get out of this insanity:
1) Use Solitare from e.g. Windows 7 (google for Microsoft Games Patcher).
2) Update your hosts: http://pgl.yoyo.org/ and http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ . -

Re:reduces some traffic, enables others.
try microblock instead. And dont rely on just adblocking plugins to keep the network clean. null route known ad servers at home and work using a blacklist http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/. the same process can be applied to rooted android phones as well, creating an ad-free experience that saves you money.
I tried uBlock but it let through a whole pile of crap that Adblock+ didn't so I had to go back. Seriously.. WTF?
-
reduces some traffic, enables others.
Adblock plus has a coloured history of cherrypicking advertisers to quietly ignore. It was accused of accepting bribes from google to allow their ads. it has a whitelist of ads it considers tasteful enough to allow as well. Its also been fingered for slowing the browser experience for many users.

Re:None of them.
I use this on my Android device with AdAway with tremendous success. I also use Android Firewall with some custom rules to block annoying apps from trying to send my data through servers in China, Romania, etc.
Here's my AdAway custom lists:
http://adaway.org/hosts.txt
http://hosts-file.net/ad_serve...
http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/...
http://someonewhocares.org/hos...
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ho...Use these, and you'll have a nice, clean, tight setup. I also use Squid on my LAN, and my router is configured to send every packet through Squid (custom iptables rules on the router; a Buffalo Wireless running dd-wrt), and on the Squid side, I block about 12,000 separate ad URLs, domains and sites, so again, the experience for anyone on my segment, is nice and clean and fast.
The side benefit of Squid, is that I can see every single request, phone home, ping, malicious or otherwise, that my devices try to do, and I can permit, prohibit, redirect or block entirely based on schedule, as I wish.
You'd be surprised how chatty a standard iPhone and Android device are, without "training" on the Squid/AdAway side.

Re:Or, use a big hosts file
It is true that the default Windows/Linux hosts file cannot do wildcard matching. However there are some apps like Acrylic or angryhosts which may allow such wildcard functionality. These seem to be Windows only however. For Linux there may be other options like DNS Chef. I am not completely clear however whether DNS Chef would work for this.
Of course hosts file blocking lists like mvps and yoyo would have to be updated to support wildcards. I guess someone could write a simple program to wildcard every domain in those lists and then maybe the list maintainers could be convinced to maintain wildcard versions. I think this is the only way that this DNS based ad blocking can move forward.

Agreed, 110% (unfortunately)... apk
The reason I state this, is because I've been building up a successful blacklist (albeit NOT vs. "spam" or phishers only, but more vs. online threats in maliciously scripted sites &/or servers known to serve up malware etc.):
Yes, thus - I'd have to say, based on 15++ yrs. of experience doing it (based on reputable & reliable sites listed below) that yes, MOST of it comes from those nations (& that's why I said "unfortunately" in my subject-line - since I know their people are NOT "all bad", just that they have a lot of what you state going on).
I base this not only on "opinion" but HARD DATA too!
From a list I apply in custom hosts files of over 1,967,147 such bogus sites/servers that grows by almost 200 - 2,000 such sites each day, approximately (that *might* strike some of you as "fantastic", but it's real)... I get my data from the following sites:

Why? Simple - it works, & on the SIMPLEST PRINCIPLE OF ALL: What you can't touch, can't hurt you... & I never was the type of person to just "sit around & take it" - I do something about it, IF possible. Hosts file on the router...
I use some domain blocking entries, plus a hosts file from http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/serverlist.php?showintro=0;hostformat=hosts on my router, with local DNS enabled. It redirects about 2500 URLs to 127.0.0.1. DD-WRT for the win! I would imagine other third-party firmware allows this, too. When I have company, they sometimes comment how much better the web pages look and how fast they load on their laptops when they use my AP. They also wonder why Facebook and Twitter don't work...

Jorge, you can name me all you want, but there is no shame is using a hosts file to block DDoS Packets. I have a foolproof list that blows away your arguments.
P.S.=> There's other methods also, via native to OS tools for network-wide propogation of fresh clean updated hosts files that program yields IF you only installed it on a "central server" for clean hosts for all nodes/workstations/servers:
I.E.-> Centrally managed hosts files? Easy as pie via logons scripts, or parse of autoexec in Windows @ bootup via GPEdit & group policies company-wide!
OR
Using taskscheduler on each workstation/server node periodically
P.P.S.=> Of course, your HOSTS file will need to have the domain/hosts name of the C&C servers, & that you have to obtain for this to work vs. threats like bogus servers &/or maliciously scripted sites. Here's some good sources for that above & beyond mvps.org (I noted them above):

This concept & technique is VERY simple to understand, as far as how to install a custom HOSTS file, how to get data to populate it (& if need be? An Access import & "SELECT * DISTINCT FROM (tablename) ORDER BY ASC" type query & export can do the deduplication/normalization end even).
E.G.-> I've taught it to people who have NO CLUE in computing in fact, & they took to it like ducks to water - especially custom editing their custom HOSTS file with text editors once they understand what speeds them up (hardcodes) & secures them + how, by blocking out bogus sites/servers!

P.S.=> Of course, your HOSTS file will need to have the domain/hosts name of the C&C servers, & that you have to obtain for this to work vs. threats like bogus servers &/or maliciously scripted sites. Here's some good sources for that above & beyond mvps.org (I noted them above):

http://www.malwaredomainlist.com/hostslist/hosts.txt
http://mirror1.malwaredomains.com/files/ (justdomains here)

https://spyeyetracker.abuse.ch/monitor.php?filter=lastupdated
http://www.malwareurl.com/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ (updater for Spybot "Search & Destroy" & it fortifies HOSTS files)Those are some of my regular sources that are reputable & reliable for custom HOSTS file data populations vs. known threats online - I consolidate them here via programs I wrote that normalize/deduplicate repeated entries, sort/alphabetize the results, & change from larger + slower 127.0.0.1 (longer & loopback ops happen here) to the faster & smaller 0.0.0.0 (or even 0 on Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003): Enjoy!

Re:Wow.
here is also a nice urlfilter.ini (one of many formats available here actually) generator http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/

O. is great except on Google & Microsoft servi
It bothers me how Google undersupports Opera and how much effect it has on usability of their services. Plus is not working very well, for example the translation of link inserted into new stream entry does not work as in other browsers, Picasa is just lame in it, extensive usage of Javascript in Gmail can make the responses slow sometimes... Opera has to update the browser.js to make it work at least somehow.
However I love the way how can I customize Youtube with extensions or usersrcipts, how add blocking works (btw here's a generator for common ad source in many formats, one of them is Opera's urlfilter.ini here http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/ It completely different experience to surf the web with ads blocked or not.
Microsoft services like Technet and MSDN forums are also crippled in Opera but I know it is not Opera's fault.
Opera is unbeaten in working with lots of tabs - try working with 30+ tabs in other browsers and compare the speed and responsiveness of the user interface. Opera link is just great - there is simply no need for services like Readitlater on Instapaper if you have Opera Mini or Mobile on your phone / tablet, the bookmarks just sync there too. If it has problems it is most probably Flash error or situation where too many extensions and/or userscripts are processing the page.
I miss just better session manager preferably with syncing via Link. -
Re:Can it run adblock, flashblock and noscript?
I do a global block of ad-servers via self-inflicted DNS poisoning. Essentially I use dnsmasq to redirect all ad-server requests to 127.0.0.1, then default all other dns requests to google's dns servers. You can find the ad server lists here.

Link for hinted version
I thought I would have a look at this font but it looks terrible on windows with cleartype on at 11points, however I managed to find a hinted version at:

Re:Does it have Adblock?
- get the ad server list here: http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers
- add list to your host file
- reload browser
- enjoy the benefits of adblocking without a plugin

Re:Slow News Day - WTF?
If you're going to the trouble of setting up a squid proxy, I'm surprised you haven't thought of using a DNS blackhole... Just use a list from a site like http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/, with a cron job set to automatically update the list. It's doubly trivial if you're running a squid proxy, since you could simply update it as a hosts file.

Re:Wake me up when...
Use the modified one, SRWare. If you don't want to, there's always privoxy.
Or, if you don't want to maintain a HOSTS file yourself, but still don't want any other software, there's this excellent ad-server list which can be downloaded in all kinds of formats (yes, even as a HOSTS file). If you're REALLY lazy, you can use this link along with a 1 line shell script and a crontab entry (or windows scheduler or whatever it's called) to automate updating your HOSTS file.

Re:Filtering my own results
implement ranking in a way that's weighted towards users similar to you...maybe using time-on-site data from their pool of analytics would be better
But how well would this work for getting relevant results for people from that slashdot that will all likely be thrown into a similar group? I'm sure more than a few
/.'ers have long had google-analytics blocked (hosts file or ad blockers), I know I have. -
Re:This is exactly...
Unfortunately, they probably did. I know several well paid network engineers and sysadmins who really have no understanding of how the internet works, and would think a local ISP DNS block would work. The typical training for these positions is heavy on the "how", and light on the "why".
More realistically, they know exactly why it isn't working and aren't trying very hard to implement it. It's called "paying lip-service". A DNS block does work fine, as long as your users don't want to, or don't try to circumvent it. Case in point, I'm using DNS block on my home/small business network to block out adservers, using the list from http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/. Works great, because nobody on the network has any interest at all in circumventing it. If I were blocking something like Google, the users would riot. And they'd switch to a different DNS server.
Most people in the kind of position where they'd be able to implement a DNS block know that the only way to enforce it would be to block DNS traffic at the routers... or to silently redirect DNS traffic to the ISP's DNS server, something that's ridiculously easy to do with most routers/gateways/firewalls. -
Re:Same question as always. Why isn't there a chart of the various licenses ranging from least restrictive to most restrictive?
You mean like this
http://www.petefreitag.com/item/533.cfm
or http://www.croftsoft.com/library/tutorials/opensource/
or http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000833.html
All found with a very cursory Search on Google. If these are not enough you could always open a little program called OpenOffice and create one. Given how many of the above are crosslinked, You could find any number of people to host it.
I think though the proper place for your chart is probably at OSI itself

Why stop there. Block 'em all!

They don't even get a chance. -
I won't notice....
SmoothWall Firewall
DansGuardian Content Filter
Domain Block of Ad-Servers.
Nope...I won't notice at all. -
Re:Vista
I'm glad it's working...
But it's worth mentionning that it isn't really *that* hard to set up a basic DNS server. Once it's up, there's really not a lot of maintenance you need to do. Actually, there's none if all you want to do is cache your ISP's DNS locally, except for the occasional security update (which isn't even that frequent; I can't remember the last time I heard about a major DNS exploit).
The reason I'm running one, though, is that the computer is up anyway. It's running on my web/mail server (which is behind a firewall, only ports being forwarded to it are 25, 80, 443, and 993), and it allowed me a single point with which to update the list from http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/ -
Re:How is this a new thing?
Likewise... I use the ads as an excuse to get a drink, check my e-mail, visit the loo, etc. Ads on TV are pretty harmless, really. Besides... I like some ads. Every now and then, they'll come up with a witty, intelligent ad that makes you laugh. I'll actually watch those ones...
As far as crap on the Internet... Firefox 2, Adblock Plus, the list found at http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/, and on my mail server, milter-greylist, SpamHaus RBL, and SpamAssassin with a sensitivity threshhold of 1.0. (and a daily cron task that has SA learn my "Spam-Bin" folder on IMAP as spam). Oh, and ClamAV, too, to block viruses. -

Re:How about an API
Yes, it does. The interface is real easy to use, and you can add or edit entries if you want broader matches.
If you just want precompiled lists, you can go to http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/
Either way, it works really well. -
Re:What's also funny is its really hard to get rid
I just love how
/.ers seem intent on biting the hand that feeds; but, if you are investing time on cleaning your mozoogle searches, it's time wasted. Unless you're masquerading your browser headers somehow, google will still see all. Tinfoil hats, anyone? -
Very interesting...This is a very neat process that I would enjoy having the ability to root around in. Very nice tool, and looks like it has created some excellent data.
I would enjoy seeing some of the nastier data put forth in a simple list so that I can add them to my banned domain listing on my firewall.
Currently, I knock down ads(from the ~1800 most active servers), with the wonderful help of the following gentleman.

Re:Opera?
- select "in opera url filter ini format", "no links back to this page", "view list as plain text" and hit "Go".
- Save all the text except the blank lines and ones starting with "#" into your Opera directory, naming the file "filter.ini".
- Close Opera if it's running
- Add the line "URL Filter File=~/.opera/filter.ini" to your opera6.ini under "[Adv User Prefs]".
- Start Opera and not see ads anymore
- Eat pie - cuz itz goooooood
