My parents bought it for me to learn how to use a computer and type due to my disabilities when I was like seven years old or so. I was scared of it. And then, I found out it can do computer games since I was a video gamer (Atari 2600 and arcades). I played its leaked alpha/beta or whatever it was and tried it on my king ant's 386 portable work machine (IBM P70). It was beautiful, but not playable.

Then came shareware release after 12/10/1993, but I couldn't play it (too choppy and no audio card). So, I gave a copy to my next door neighbor with his 386 DX desktop PC. He played it for a little bit and told me it was amazing, but he had to study for his college freshman finals. I finally played it when I got my own custom built 486 DX2/66. Then, came dial-up multiplayer with him. Oh my, that was the best game when we played together co-op.

Then, came in making my own DOOM 2 mods. I also hung out with a local BBS with people in making one/1. Even it got SirDOOM working to have 4-players multiplayer over dial-up! We even recorded demos of it. It was incredible and worth it! :D

I was addicted to ftp.cdrom.com's DOOM stuff. I have many other stories too. I even had dreams!

As I got older, I gamed a lot less due to busy life and no energy. These days, I use the Internet to read, see, socialize, etc.

I still do play games once in a while like in IRC with Rbot's turn based card games (e.g., Uno and Junkyard). I did briefly play John Romero's classic DOOM maps and those were fun like old times.

Heh. My parents got me a Texas Instrument 99/4A computer so I could use it for homeworks when I was young. I hated it, but I found out it could do video games like my Atari 2600 and arcades. I still have and use my Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (ST380011A; 7200 RPM; 80 GB) HDD for storage/backup/secondary in my current Debian stable box. I was a teen(ager) back then! I got it from a local BBS, but couldnâ(TM)t play it. My next door neighbor could on his 386 DX machine, but he had to study for finals so he only played a few levels. Haha. Years later, I made two DOOM 2 mod(ification)s: http://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/files/doom2/j2doom/j2doom.html ⦠I think I played DOOM at 9600 speeds with my next door neighbor (we both had 14.4k modems! :().

Does anyone remember what time DOOM 1 shareware was released to the public? I couldn't find that answer.

When I had my cranial surgery (due to my locked jaw -- had to open my jaw -- it was so bad that I couldn't stick my tongue out), the doctors had to break some nerves to fix this (from my neck and right side of my head near the ear area).

After the complex surgery, the right side of my face were unresponsive (i.e. couldn't move and feel). That included my right eye where I couldn't move my eye lids (not even close fully).

After about two months, I went to another surgery to fix these damaged facial nerves. The doctors fixed this by connecting working nerves to the damaged ones. Basically, they were rerouting these signals as if you were rerouting a network.

Some of my broken nerves are currently recovered, but it will take years to recovered almost fully (not 100%).

5/15/2012: Nope, they never recovered fully. I still can't close my right eye lid fully and can feel a little more, but still can't move fully. The feelings still funky in other areas on my head/face/neck. Heh!

I wonder how much has improved from 1998 if I had that nerve reconstruction in 2010s.

Is it because you played too much DOOM like me? I was a DOOMaholic. I made mods, maps, visited ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idsoftware/doom.../ daily to download stuff, played a lot, etc. Here's even sadder. I still have DOOM 1 and 2 installed, but with Doomdays Engine stuff. I haven't touched it for ages though.

OK. After playing Crysis single player demo, I only got 9-10 FPS average (0 FPS minimum!) with high settings (I refuse to go lower, did turn off motion blur which drove me nuts) according to the two batch benchmark files. I just upgraded my system last December 2006 too! That video card was expensive (almost 300 bucks) enough! :(

My current computer specifications can be found here:

I use the latest NVIDIA drivers (including betas), 1280x1024 native resolution on my 19" LCD monitor (helps to use lower native resolutions since I don't need larger one :)), no FSAA if FPS is needed, and 16X anisotropic (no anisostropic didn't even help for Crysis).

Is it worth getting a newer video card (e.g., 8800) to help the newer games' FPS like Crysis, World in Conflict, C&C3 (not too choppy like the first two), etc.? I do not want to upgrade my motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc. at this time. I am not sure where's the bottleneck is. Video card? My CPU? Something else?

I have an Athlon 64 3200+ (754 CPU) with 2 GB of RAM and Windows XP Pro. SP2. I also have a
GeForce 6800 (AGP; 128 MB) [being RMA due to problems so using my old ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW
card]. Are you saying I am GPU limited and I should upgrade my video card? I was hoping to
upgrade my motherboard, CPU (Conroe or Athlon 64 X2 dualcore), and RAM later this year or when
Vista comes out to keep up with the latest games. My detailed system specifications are shown in

Right now, Obilivion, Call of Duty 2, and other newer games etc. are not smooth on my system
with all graphic details at maximum. I don't use FSAA, but do crank up anisotropic (16X). In
FEAR, I got like 25 FPS average with its timedemo.

So should I just upgrade my video card again (AGP) or will my CPU be a bottleneck? I am still
going to keep my old parts like my old IDE HDDs, SB Audigy2 ZS, PS/2 mouse, 17" CRT, Antec case,
PSU, CD-RW burner, DVD-ROM drive, etc. to save money (don't make that much :P).

Two biggest problems with computer cases for me are that I have physical disabilitles and heat control.

I have problems moving computers (even minitowers), and opening and closing cases, using screwdrivers (even electronic ones), removing case covers (sliding types still fail for me). Are there any out there work for me so I don't have to get someone to do it for me?

Second, heat!! I have problems keeping my computers stable for every upgrades. My room can go aboev 85 degrees(F) in the heat wave. A/C won't do well since my room is upstair so all heat rises. I don't even overlock.

Note: Have seen CPU go up to 150F during stress like gaming in 85+F room (don't remember the peak temperatures for motherboard).

No, I am not getting water cooling. Too much work, and my disabilities will not work with that setup.

I am planning to do redo my hardwarwe setups when I get my Athlon 64 x2 in autumn (much hotter than now).

I don't care about the look of the case as long as it is not pink color. :)

It seems like my multiple physical disabilities make drawing blood a lot harder for trained nurses and doctors because of the ways my veins are even after heating my arms! The most attempts was on 7/23/1998 according to my journal/log/blog entry for 7/27/1998:

At around 6:30 AM or so, I had to change my cloth and get IV shots. This part was not fun. It took about 13 needle shots to find my tiny veins. I have had never gone through this many. Sheesh, the doctors, nurses, and I were all frustrated. I finally got drugged out and passed out. You won't believe where the last shot was done. I still have the holes and broken veins on my body.

Hopefully, nurses and doctors will get some strange vein setup to practice on so next time, I only get one friggin shot!

This a bit off-topic, but related to the parent reply. Are there any good players in Linux and MacOSX? I don't mean XMMS because its engine sucks for MOD, S3M, 669, etc.

I use ModPlug Player in Windows. It has all sorts of goodies. It even clears up some of the old tunes even for a three years old player! I wished Winamp and XMMS used this player for the plugin.

Texas Instrument 99/4A was my first computer. My father bought one so I could learn to use a computer except I learned to use it for games. I was into Atari 2600 games and arcades (e.g., Pac-Man).

Recently, I finally got TI99/4A to work in MESS emulator. The instructions can be found here in case anyone is interested. Some of those games still rule! :)

Is it worth getting this version for my old Red Hat Linux v7.1 and v7.2 boxes (currently running Kernel 2.4.20)? Will I see any performance improvement?

I mainly use them as a workstation (7.1 as a private server for personal usage) for gaming (e.g., RTCW, RTCW:ET, Q3A and its mods, surfing, IRC'ing, watching videos (DVDs, AVI, etc.). I haven't really noticed any IO problems.

I did noticed dragging video windows (e.g., MPlayer) and my SB Live! (emu10k1 driver from opensource.creative.com) stop playing audio until I let go of the mouse button. Does this Kernel version fix this problem?

In my opinion, ModPlug Player sounds better than any of the other players for MOD, S3M, XM, IT, etc. I have a small collection of my favorite tunes on my personal Web site. :)
