Why is it that everybody assumes that women aren't attracted to smart, sensitive guys?
I'm smart and sensitive (not my words, mind you) and I never had trouble finding girlfriends and now I'm happily married.
Of course if you don't take care of your personal hygiene and can't talk about anything else than SCO, Microsoft and Linux you'll have trouble. But then again, you are not being smart and sensitive in the first place.
Actually even talking isn't (initially) that important. Women can talk endlessly about themselves and their friends, so all you have to do is to keep listening and ask something trivial once in a while to show that you're paying attention.

The funny thing is, girls tend to be attracted to men they find 'mysterious', 'shy' or 'quiet' (see mysterious). All you have to do to be mysterious is strike up a conversation then let her do all the talking. If she likes you and she gets comfortable just let her yak all night while you throw in a 'uh huh' or 'really?' once in awhile. It's really easy to feign interest with someone who loves to hear their own voice.:)
I have had incredible success just repeated whatever they say back to them in the form of a question. Works like a goddamn charm because most women (and people for that matter) love to talk about themselves. For example:
Girl: And then, we like, went to Gina's house and got, like, really drunk.
You: You went to Gina's and got drunk?
Girl: Yeah! And then we were like, so drunk, and like, we went to the bar.
You: You went to the bar huh? How drunk were you?
Girl: We were like, blah blee blahbbyblah.
You: Blahbeblahble? Did you blahblahblah?
This can go on forever, just don't be too obvious about what you are doing. I guarantee if you can handle hearing her spout for this long that you will at least get a number. (Maybe not the right one, but maybe you had bad breath.)

First, I know this is OT. However, it's as OT as the rest of posts....
This reminds me about an interview Richard Feynman gave a long time ago. It was after he finished working at Los Alamos. He was depressed. Everywhere he went, he couldn't understand why people were building things anymore. He had just spent the last 4 years helping build the most destructive weapon known to man. He was sure the world was going to end any day now. Safe to say, he was wrong. We've had apocolyptic doomsayers for a long time. The world didn't end in 1944. It didn't end over Cuba. It hasn't ended over the middle-east. Look, I know there are priorities. However, your post could randomly apply to anything. Certianly death and war is more important than games, the California election, movies, sports, and most everything else.
My guess is that your depressed about something else. So for whatever it is worth, I stop worrying about the world along time ago. I've learned to hate all politicians equally, let vocal religious extremists argue among themselves, and I don't have a preference for the spelling of the word flavor/flavour.

It seems a bit incomplete in the sense that it's lacking two of the four more modern consoles (at least, he only mentions a PlayStation 2 and a Dreamcast). There are definitely games worthy of collecting on both the XBox and the GameCube. Also, as a collector, has he ever actually played all of the games that he owns? I imagine that that would be pretty much a full time job, though if he can afford all of those gaming devices, he's probably independently wealthy.

I'm a DP'er... (Digital Presser?) Joe, the guy that owns that nice video game setup, is one of the guys behind the Classic Gaming Expo that was held in Las Vegas for the past few years. He's big into the scene and really knows his stuff. He's the editior in cheif of the Digital Press Collectors guide. The guide shows the rarity and dollar values they believe older games are worth. DP is/.'ed now so I can't provide a link to the guide. He does sell the guide at a few places besides the dp site. Ebay is one of them:)
It's a great community. Everyone is friendly and welcome people of all ages to the community.

Err, that's a pretty lame comparison. Why would a coin collecter spend some rare penny on a piece of one cent candy?
Anyway with things like coins and stamps you can't really "use" them, but with autos and especially games you certainly can use them.
Owning a recently made toy(ie form the last 20 years) and then not playing with it is fairly retarded. Things from this time period simply aren't worth enough to worry about. I could see not wanting to risk really rare games that are worth hundreds of dollars, but most gaming equipment and software is easily replaceable and under $100 dollars on ebay.
I say play on.

Very true, but this is slashdot after all. That's why I titled my post Obligatory girlfriend remark. Someone had to make it:)
This is one hell of a collection, but I can't help but wonder if he does anything to prevent bitrot or is preserving these games in some way. It's cool now, but in 20 years, he will be left with a lot of worthless plastic and silicon.
I'm in the same boat as this guy (although my Vectrex needs some work on the display *grumble*), and I *am* doing something about bitrot.
I'm keeping copies of ROMs for every game I own on my PC, and back them up to whatever off-site media is available reasonably cheap. Started with tape, moved onto CD, and just finished with some DVD-R's of ROMs.
If I keep this up, my game collection will more than outlive me, although I've yet to see any bitrot on any game I own, and some of the original Atari VCS cartridges are 26 years old now.

Say what? If you're talking console cartridges, then there's no "bit-rot", because those use factory mask-programmed ROMs, i.e. the data is etched into good ol' silicon. This is as good as it gets in terms of long-term reliability. Many arcade machines, OTOH, use EPROMs, which tend to "discharge" over the years. But real ROMs are built to last.

North wall: the other Vectrex is just to the right, alongside the Adventurevision. behind that, a loose ColecoVision game collection. Loose Nintendo games are behind the Millipede mobile. East wall: on the shelves are the nicer boxed titles for Atari 2600 and 5200, just to the right are the Intellivision boxes. Below, a custom-made storage rack holds over 350 Atari 2600 games. East wall: here's the rest of that wall. Intellivision occupies the three top shelves to the right.
West wall: various things tucked into this corner, blocking my way into the drawers (pics below). North wall: when you open the closet behind the hanging marquees, this is what you see. Game Gear, Arcadia, Vectrex, Game.com, books, and miscellaneous peripherals are kept in here. Note the "gun rack" on the door. I really like that collection.. The beach towels are cool, I remember when I was a little kid I had those.. Which I had kept them up instead of using them till they were faded and tattered.. I do still have a lot of old nintendo/mario oriented figurines and stuff I bet you'd like though =P One day I'll have to gather my collection of games/consoles/etc and make the 'storage room' look nice =P
If you'd asked two weeks ago I'd have said "Nothing but the PSU + HP mobo" and given it to you cheap. Now however, after about ten days of hell trying unsuccessfully to cure an XP networking issue that worked for a year and suddenly hated me, I'm using the HP case as a router.
I didn't go with HEX, I just started with numbers and had more than 9 images. Going to 11, 12 etc would have messed up the list, so I went to letters. If I'd had more than 16 I'd be using G, H, etc. =)

How bizarre, I just came home with my game collection (well, just the boxes anyway) from my mother's basement... As always you can always find someone who's bigger, better and faster than you on the internet.
Hi all,
that's my room in the main link, but my addiction is well-shared, if you happened to check out all the others (many of whom are way bigger than me... isn't that *something*... envy?).
The girlfriend idea is a good one. I've been thinking about that for several years now. I don't know if my wife of 12 years will have a problem with it, but maybe she'll be up for a threesome, sounds like good clean fun. Thanks for the suggestions!
The bandwidth sucks but at least we own our own servers. Never been slashdotted before but I welcome future links now that I'm prepared for it.

Some form of decent project setup. Not the old behind-screen projection TV's that were known to burn with video games, but a decent overhead. Than perhaps a modified KVM switch to swap between consoles (and a couple nice power bars to allow many of the consoles to be plugged in).
Throw in a nice gamers' couch, and he'd be set. Having a few thousand games isn't much good if all you have is a hard floor and 13" TV to play 'em with .

Hi all, that's my room in the main link, but my addiction is well-shared, if you happened to check out all the others (many of whom are way bigger than me... isn't that *something*... envy?). The girlfriend idea is a good one. I've been thinking about that for several years now. I don't know if my wife of 12 years will have a problem with it, but maybe she'll be up for a threesome, sounds like good clean fun. Thanks for the suggestions! The bandwidth sucks but at least we own our own servers. Never been slashdotted before but I welcome future links now that I'm prepared for it. I should stop by here more often. Some form of decent project setup. Not the old behind-screen projection TV's that were known to burn with video games, but a decent overhead. Than perhaps a modified KVM switch to swap between consoles (and a couple nice power bars to allow many of the consoles to be plugged in).
Throw in a nice gamers' couch, and he'd be set. Having a few thousand games isn't much good if all you have is a hard floor and 13" TV to play 'em with .
