Linux 2.6.0-test11 Kernel Released
An anonymous reader writes "Linus Torvalds has released his final 2.6.0-test kernel, calling it the 'Beaver In Detox'. Following this release, Linus says that 2.6 development will be led by Andrew Morton. The kernel's name refers in jest to the previous release, which Linus had named "Stoned Beaver". It contains a fix for the aic7xxx driver, proper error handling in do_fork(), some firewire fixes, and correction of a few skbuff leakage points. Download it from a kernel.org mirror."

he's a comic genius as well!
I just compiled test10! When are they going to be done with linux? It seems like all they ever do is fix bugs. I am about to switch to BSD or something. Redhat really needs to get their shit together if they want to be taken seriously!

If not, I'm not getting it.
So will the release of 2.6.0 now be called "Beaver in Rehab?"
Linus is so cool!

Some may scoff at changing a release name to suit customers and corporate supporters, but it is a simple and useful thing to do.
I suggest the next release should go a step further. Something smooth, something that rolls off of the tongue, something like "Clean Shaven Beaver"
I, for one, welcome our new kernel beaver overlords.
No word on a resolution for the problem with pre-empt, at least none that can be seen with a search for "preempt" in the page. :-P

A Beginners Guide
Horses are a proud, independent breed of animal. Their breed, their social
life, their training (or lack therof), and their own developing personality
are a few of the variables that must be accounted for when attempting to
understand them individualy. Horses, like people, all have individual
personalities so one must really spend a great deal of time with an animal
to develop a significant relationship. I can say with a great deal of
confidence however, that anyone that spends a significant amount of time
observing and interacting with horses can do ANYTHING with them.
Basic reproductive behavior
Horses, like most animals, depend on the sense of smell to signify the
readiness of a female for an encounter. The stallion will approach the
mare from behind and make a squealing noise...if the mare is in heat she
will "wink" her pussy and squirt a few short squirts of urine. The
stallion will have to approach her several times (unless shes a real slut)
before she will acquiesse. The mare will often prove recalcitrant for some
time, even threatening to kick the stallion. As he squeals and nips her
however, with time, she becomes acquiessent and allows him to mount her and
complete the union.
The Stallion
A full grown stallion's cock, when fully erect, will measure some two to
three feet long. It can be three to six inches thick at the base, to about
two inches thick at the head. Horses are somewhat different from other
animals in the way their cock head works. When a horse is fully erect and
excited and ready to mount, his cock head is somewhat pointed and not as
thick as might be normally observed. This is to facillatate an easier
entry into the mare. After the horse has entered and reaches a climax the
head swells (though it is more spongy then hard) into a fist sized mass as
he ejacultates. It is thought that this serves as a plug to force the
semen deep into the mare rather then allowing it to leak out. A full grown
stallion can ejaculate about one cup ( 8 ounces ) of semen. It will take
quite a few spurts to accomplish this. Each time his tail will raise and
lower in a brief flick. The first few jets are of a thin to average
consistency of cum. The final few jets are of a thick gelatinous
substance... it is thought that this serves to "seal" the mares pussy so
that the semen has time to do it's thing before leaking out. Horse semen
is extremely viscous, if you touch your finger to a pool of it you can draw
a thin string of it five to six feet long! Horse cum has a nice flat taste
to it...not at all bitter like man's cum. You can easily drink cups of it
with no discomfort.
The Mare - how to do it.
Mares can be quite satisfactory for the average well endowed male. If you
are somewhat less developed you might find better pleasure with a pony or
Miniature Horse. These are also better as they are lower to the ground. A
pony you can fuck standing up. A miniature horse on your knees or
squatting depending on the size. A mare will require something to stand on
or "platform shoes"...(IE mini stilts to raise you a foot off the ground)
so that you can reach her pussy.
Fucking any horse will depend on the horse. Some will be ready right
away...some will take coaxing. Pet the animal, talk to it softly, spend
time with it gaining it's trust. If something you are doing upsets it then
don't force it. Talk to it and calm it. If you work slowly you can make
an animal accept anything. It is just a question of helping it overcome
it's fears. All animals fear man if raised in the wild. How any animal
reacts will depend on it's own experiences. If you haved raised the animal
yourself in a loving enviroment, then you should have no problem
associating with it, if it is a strange animal that you have met in the
wild then you will have to go through an extended "courtship" to learn how
BSD is always dying, and now the Tux has hit rock bottom on sex and hard drugs?
Linux must be a fan of the Sex Pistols.
Is it really necessary to have every test release on the front page?

No word on a resolution for the problem with pre-empt, at least none that can be seen with a search for "preempt" in the page. :-P
There's no way this isn't going to sound like an absolute fanboy post but oh well -- how cool is this guy? Doesn't seem at all smug, great sense of humor, and not afraid to tell the world he's got a turkey affinity...not to mention some freudian obsession with beavers all of a sudden. He seems more people-esque instead of acting like a mega-deity (which he is), which is awesome.
/me fades into the background while doing the "We're not worthy!" chant.
Man, if I had my choice in operating systems, I'd want this guy coding it! Oh wait, I do...and sure enough, he does.
It's no wonder that the Linux Kernel development process isn't being taken seriously, what with the childish drug references and sexual innuendo being spouted. We need a wholesome, filth-free name to call the 2.6.0 release. I propose 'squeaky clean beaver'.
Wah!
I know, I know, this site is largely aimed at Open Source news and the Linux kernel is one of the flagships of the OS movement. But this is getting slightly ridiculous. What's up next? Daily revisions of nightly builds? If by now people haven't already got to know the 2.6 kernel has some very promising features in particular for desktop uses, they are either blind, daft, both or belong to the Yankee Group.
Hate me!
Then run xconfig, make sure you've got console support compiled in (this point is key) and off you go. make, make install.
It's worth saying again, no matter how many times it's been said, that Linus and his band of merry coders are doing incredible work. On older machines, like my humble P2/266 laptop, a recompile actually feels faster, a lot faster in fact. If you're running older hardware, it's worth it to give these test kernels a try for that alone, if nothing else.

This is probably what has been happening to me.
I tried up to -test9, but after a few (2-10) hours, my cpu and disk access would shoot up and RAM usage would slowly increase. I dropped to a tty, typed the username "root", but the cpu load was so hight that login timed out before I was even prompted for a password!
So I had to kill the power on my machine while I could hear that my disk was fully active. I was not a happy camper.

Sounds like I'm gonna have something fun to do this weekend though.
As of 10/06/03, I hate COBOL developers.
It looks like they are going to ship the kernel without the latest framebuffer things. Last time I made a non -mm kernel, the framebuffers were completely hosed, and I don't think the changes have been merged yet. Am I looney or correct on this?

A VIEW FROM THE GROUND
The bad guys in Iraq
Frightened US troops are harming civilians, fuelling anti-American sentiments in Iraq, says report
LONDON - Iraqi families have come forward with accounts of how American soldiers shot dead or seriously wounded unarmed Iraqi civilians with no apparent cause.
A report by the Guardian newspaper uncovers a vicious dynamic that is undermining the American occupation in Iraq: apparently unjustified harm done to Iraqi civilians by 'scared' US soldiers have led to growing opposition against them.
In many cases, the claims, which numbered over 10,000, were confirmed by Iraqi police investigations, the newspaper reported.
The US military has had to pay out US$1.5 million (S$2.6 million) in negligence and wrongful death claims.
American commanders make payments from their discretionary funds, rarely even admitting liability, the newspaper added.
In most cases, the payments averaged a few hundred dollars and in some cases, families have been asked to sign forms waiving their right to press for further compensation.
In a brief statement to the Guardian, the US military provided no figures on the number of claims accepted.
'The US pays claims for personal injury, wrongful death and property damage,' it said.
'Payments will only be made for non-combat related activities and instances where soldiers have acted negligently or wrongfully.'
In one area of south-western Baghdad, controlled by the 82nd Airborne Division, an officer said a total of US$106,000 had been paid out to 176 claimants since July.
Beyond the initial payments, there was little recourse for the families of the dead.
No US soldier has been prosecuted for illegally killing an Iraqi civilian and commanders refuse to count the number of civilians killed or injured by their soldiers.
Iraqi courts, because of an order issued by the US-led authority in Baghdad in June, are forbidden from hearing cases against American soldiers or any other foreign troops or foreign officials in Iraq.
In three separate cases, families have described how their relatives had been killed apparently without cause by US soldiers manning observation posts or patrolling through the streets of Baghdad.
In one case, a couple were killed in front of their three young daughters when an Abrams tank ran over and crushed their car.
The number of civilian deaths caused by the US since the war remains largely uncounted.
In a report last month, Human Rights Watch said it believed 94 civilians were killed in 'questionable circumstances' by American troops between May and Sept 30.
The independent non-governmental organisation concluded that US troops were operating 'with impunity'.
'The individual cases of civilian deaths... reveal a pattern by US forces of over-aggressive tactics, indiscriminate shooting in residential areas and a quick reliance on lethal force,' it said.
'The lack of timely and thorough investigations into many questionable incidents has created an atmosphere of impunity, in which many soldiers feel they can pull the trigger without coming under review.'
For the families of the dead, the killings and the lack of legal recourse have provoked a groundswell of opposition to the US military occupation.
In some cases, relatives have spoken of their plans to join the growing guerilla resistance movement to avenge the deaths of their relatives.
'I know the American soldiers are not inhumane because I saw them when they first came and they behaved well. But now they have changed and I don't know why,' said Faiz Alwasity, who works for Civic, the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict, one of the few groups that had helped secure payments for victims of the US military operations in Afghanistan and now Iraq.
'They are becoming more aggressive, maybe because they are frightened. I am afraid this is creating more resistance against them.'
It's only the odd ones!!
Now _that's_ a smooth name that just rolls off the tongue... :)
'Clean Shaven Beaver'
Looks like Tux has been replaced in Linus' heart. Thats Great! I've always prefered Beaver meat to Penguin. Plus, you can make the coolest hats out of Beaver pelts. Now we just need a name for the little fellow. How about Bux?
Well.. maybe. Or Maybe not. But Definitely not sort of.
At least Linus didn't call it the "SCO, fuck your mama" build ;)
"I bow to no man" - Riddick
I've just heard on talk radio that author Stephen King is recovering in hospital after a nasty bout of pneumonia. Even if you didn't like his horror books, there's no doubting the contribution he's still making to culture. Truly an American icon, still.
I first used GNU/Unix and C in 1978. I rediscovered GNU/Unix in 1987. I have administered GNU/BSD,
GNU/Ultrix, GNU/HP/UX, GNU/SunOS 4.x, GNU/SunOS 5.x and more flavours of GNU/Linux than I can
remember although I started out using GNU/SLS with kernel 0.9.x.
GNU/Linux has progressed so much in such a relatively short amount of time that I am in awe at
where it is today.
To GNU/gentoo. Then I remembered someone on cola mentioning a new distro named GNU/gentoo.
Once this stage has been reached GNU/gentoo is as easy to maintain as any GNU/Linux distro I know.
There is excellent documentation on the GNU/gentoo website. There is an excellent GNU/document
describing the USE variable which should be read before installing GNU/gentoo.
Apart from everything being compiled from source so that it is optimised for your hardware and the
USE variable to tailor the type of system you want, GNU/gentoo has another little gem. This is the
GNU/gentoo init system. It is based on the excellent GNU/SYSV init system but enhances it and
makes GNU/gentoo a class apart from any other GNU/*nix system I have administered. To be brief,
GNU/gentoo init GNU/scripts allow you to specify GNU/dependencies. There is no need to GNU/worry
about S script numbering as in GNU/SYSV or where GNU/you place the startup code in GNU/BSD type
GNU/init scripts (I'm referring to GNU/BSD 4.3 here. I don't GNU/know if the free GNU/BSD's have
changed GNU/things).
To summarise: GNU/gentoo is a very special GNU/Linux distro. It may not GNU/be for the the
GNU/Linux GNU/neophyte (I'm sure GNU/someone posted to GNU/cola recently that GNU/gentoo was their
first GNU/Linux GNU/install) although if GNU/you read the GNU/docs and GNU/understand what is
going on GNU/gentoo is an excellent GNU/distro.
GNU/Support GNU/is GNU/excellent GNU/via GNU/the GNU/gentoo GNU/forums GNU/and GNU/mailing
GNU/lists.

I agree with you, but would take your proposition even further. After the beaver has finished his drug rehab program, it needs to find God. Let us all pray for 'Born Again Beaver.'
Please, the tenth post about the 2.6.0 kernel almost coming out was enough for me. Make it stop.
These are not funny.
-- Fighting mediocrity one bad post at a time.
IT IS A TEST KERNEL GODDAMNITT! Stop posting this shit on slashdot, the only people who should even give a damn are on the kernel mailing lists and already know about it. Can you use it for production? No? Then shut the fuck up about it.
I think you need to reread the name:
Beaver In Detox
Now, let your mind slip a little bit further into the gutter, and I think you will see that he did name it what you said. It's just a little more thinly veiled.
I think his reason for making it vague was that SCO needs to have everything in the open to see things (think GPL code). By making it more vague, they are less likely to be in on the joke.
-- Fighting mediocrity one bad post at a time.
Linus Torvalds just took a shit!
Let's post it on slashdot!
I was designing a dam on Windows, and it was lke beep beep beep beep... and it was like.... half of the dam was... gone.
got.
When you put 1 milion monkeys with keyboards in a room, open source occurs (taken from the Bazaar and the Cathedral), or a result of similar quality.
Since most open source development is not done by professionals nor professional organizations, there is no formal QA process. As such, Linux is in dire need of testing. Especially with all the unproven claims of stability made in its regard.
It is therefore very important that as wide a variety of people as possible download it and hose their systems so that bugs get reported in newsgroups where people will get laughed at for not reading every bit of manual out there.
I think that the people posting complaints about this story were either ignorant of the open source development process, or just trolling.
Thank you.
of this release compared to Windows XP?
:-)
Sorry, could help it
"I think this line is mostly filler"
I've been running Gentoo with gaming-sources (has pre-emptive patch)... I get the same problem.... particularly when running OpenOffice, and compiling fishyfudge in background. It happened right in the middle of the "emerge" process and my disk was doing stuff, when it happened.. I too was severely bugged.
You stupid IDIOT. Obviously you HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE do you?
Maybe if you ACTUALLY READ the LAST kernel release notes you MIGHT COMPREHEND why that was so fucking funny!
BEFORE you run you stupid self important yap why don't you make sure you HAVE A FUCKING CLUE FIRST!
You really look like a TOTAL CLOWN and an idiotic NEWBIE.
get a clue you loser.
Will this test kernel have better support for acpi on my hp ze4430us? Somehow I doubt it. test9 and 10 both freeze when I try to monitor my battery charge...now how useful is a laptop if you don't know how long it will stay on?
why don't they just make the tests bigger and make the highest one 10?
This kernel is ours!!!
O Canada!
Today, thanks to conservation and silk hats, the beaver - the largest rodent in Canada - is alive and well all over the country.
It WASN'T funny there, and IT isn't FUNNY here.
Now DO you UNDERSTAND?
-- Fighting mediocrity one bad post at a time.
Since it was LINUS TORVALDS HIMSELF who original mention BEAVER OVERLORDS I guess you have taken your self importance so far that you are now DISSING THE FATHER OF LINUX as UNFUNNY?!
You are a FUCKING IDIOT EXTRAORDINAIRE.
The original poster was making an ALLUSION to the comment MADE BY LINUS HIMSELF mentioning a BEAVER OVERLORD e-mail address. So by combining a tired slashdot GAG with the BEAVER OVERLORDS from LINUS it combined to create A HUMOROUS PLAY ON WORDS. A HUMOR HACK if you will. I'm sorry your BRAIN IS TOO FEEBLE to catch it. Try to THINK REAL HARD until you experience a strange involuntary movement in your lips also known as A SMILE.
NOW FUCK OFF.
That no-one has suggested Longhorn and Beaver should go head-to-head. But perhaps I should be browsing at -1. Or -5.
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'd like to get the opinion of the folks here -- what's the reason for the (seemingly) better coverage/popularity of Linux vs *BSD? Is it the development model? Better architecture? More hardware support? Cuter mascot? ...
On the other hand, I'm drunk and maybe just imagining all of this...
.....The Beaver F0rkS YOU!
NO SIG
My only need for scsi is for my venerable old hp scanjet 4 and a cd burner, so this ancient future domain isa card works just dandy.
Unfortunately, the driver segfaults under 2.6.0-x. It worked a treat with 2.4.
Anyone else had this issue? Should I make a formal bug report? Is it a hassle to do so?
Brak: What's THAT?

kernel mantainer and diana biographer... amazingly multifacetic guy
I mean I heard all these great things about this 'Linux' so I downloaded the new kernel thingy. I went into 'My Documents', double clicked it and my computer said that it wasn't an executable. It was the wierdest thing though cause it did execute and my screen turned all blue. It wasn't very functional, but it reminded me of windows exactly. The only it could do was restart my computer, but hey you gotta start somewhere.
I know several distros have their kernels heavily patched (e.g. RedHat). Does anyone know if there is a distro which leaves the kernel totally untouched? Or, perhaps RedHat and a few others are unique in their capacity to actually fiddle with it.
Because I think Linux is a good kernel, and Linus is a great engineer, I must always laugh when he makes a joke. Nope, two completely separate things.
You are a FUCKING IDIOT EXTRAORDINAIRE.
(PS: You need to get the sac to post non anonymously.)
-- Fighting mediocrity one bad post at a time.
On the same token, respect people who demand a little professionalism and happen to dislike something that's fighting to be taken seriously being called "Stoned Beaver."
Then why did all the other test releases get headline news?
...and if there's another release in a few days, then we call it "stubble!"
As usual, I set a torrent here.
"Res publica non dominetur"
Just yesterday I managed to crash my test10 box by doing a "head -1 /proc/net/tcp". Didn't see this mentioned in the test11 patch but will try it ASAP.
Anyone else got such a crash?
I'm on AMD with pre-emption enabled. System pretty stable except when I played too much with USB host driver.

We should add a "Torvalds makes you happier everyday" section.
WTF am I doing replying to an AC at 5 A.M on a Friday night?
ARGH! I'm just waiting for the Initio ini9100 driver to be fixed in the 2.6.0 tree, and then i'll be moving to 2.6.0.
Dammit, somebody fix that driver!
Go to bugzilla.kernel.org, create an account and post all the info you have about the bug. Don't be afraid of posting huge blocks of text (and if you think it's too large, you can add it to the bug report as an attachment). Post dmesg output, kernel configuration files, the output of programs like lspci -v or cat /proc/interrupts, and everything else you can think is useful.
Since what you getting is probably a panic or a oops, if it does not have already the symbolic function names, run it through ksymoops to add the missing data, and post the output.
Is it really appropriate to run the Beaver kernel on a distro that has release names taken from Disney characters?
Though I suppose Woody wasn't a good name either. Nevermind, they'll go great together.
When I am king, you will be first against the wall
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all
In Gentoo you can 'emerge vanilla-sources' instead of 'gentoo-sources' for a plain-jane vanilla kernel. To work with developmental vanilla kernels you just 'emerge development-sources'.
If you're into manually tweaking kernels and packages I highly recommend Gentoo, you'll learn tons about Linux just by installing it.

mod it up dang you!
AMD and Pre-Empt is a bad combo. Memory errors and corruption happen often.
