  7. Abiword owns on AbiWord beats OpenOffice to a Grammar Checker · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just thought I'd drop my 2 cents and say that abiword is my favourite word processor.. It is so easy to use and fits in GNOME like a glove. OpenOffice really is a big mess code-wise. Abiword has much more volounteers than Openoffice. (OpenOffice devs are paid) I think in the long-run, Abiword (and Koffice) will be the office tools of choice because of the fact that they can move faster with their smaller code-base, as well as rely on other GPL tools more. Abiword is lightweight, and as a result keeps less prone the upgrade cycle. (YES, I'm referring to the linux upgrade cycle, the kind where applications continue to get bigger, and new computers are required.. It appears better than the windows one, but it is still an annoyance when I think that my 900Mhz computer has the same function which my 166mhz one used to. )

I went to a pretty posche high-school. (Not yuppy, just slightly below) And many students had laptops. I only found it usefull for making OpenOffice Impress from linux. (Windows boxes had different fonts as default) Laptops are a luxury really. I only got one in grade 12 for university. Laptops these days (In my price range) are so bulky that they aren't even portable. They are just portable enough to move from home to university and back for weekends. The portable laptops that have any performance worth buying end up being too pricey for me. The end result is you end up with a movable desktop. Until I got my laptop, I'd have vnc on my linux desktop, which I'd access from school computers. This was usually more than enough.

Yes it is intimidating to new linux users.. But I like having specialized distributions.

I like having varying filesystem heirarchies and all that shizzle.

It produces more robust code. Applications get tested on everything from XBoxes to Tea Kettles.

It allows for more specialization. If there was one distro targetting n00bs... Then what would happen to the 1337 people?

I think variety is awesome! Find a bug in one distro that is taking time to fix? Switch to another one.

Also, there is only so much development that can happen under one management. There is only one vision with one managing group. With the current system there are many visions for tomorrow, each one bold and new!!

Also, multiple distros mean competition!! Which we all know is great!
