Attach rate could also indicate more than one thing. Software like Wii Sport Resort and Wii Fit Plus are selling very strongly showing that lots of people found the originals fun enough to buy sequels and expansions. Many people also do not want to buy a 10 hour FPS game and a 60 hour RPG every month.

That would mean something if you could prove that games are reviewed mainly on how much fun the average consumer would have with the game. Instead they are rated on things like graphics, story, marketing spend and the personal preferences of the narrow demographic who self select themselves as game reviewers.

It seems to me that the legality of this is *very* dubious here in the UK.

A click through contract or EULA isn't exactly legally binding here unless it is made clear at the point of sale. Even then, if it states anything that would overide our statutory rights it wouldn't be legally binding.

Our statutory rights include the data protection act, which should make EA liable for all sorts of compensation claims if they ship this spyware in the UK.

One thing makes story sequences where the user is control worse than many cut scenes. When I'm bored with the story I can't do anything to cut to the chase. But it's interactive, so whopee, I can go and look at the wallpaper while some NPC's have a conversation.

A designer can choose to let a really game character animation play that ruins the gameplay just because it's pretty. A designer can move the camera to a point where the new bump mapped pixel shaded metal walls look absolutely amazing at the expense of playablility. Oh, and that new spangly game engine can only render one small room at a time? Never mind, just shrink the levels and put the game on rails.

Well, we all have our own bugs to bear. The voice acting could have been better, personally I prefer no voice acting at all in games like this with everything text only. It's normally better at getting the information across and it gives the imagination more room to work in.

  10. Re:Creepy is not disturbing on When Will Games Disturb Us? · · Score: 1

Different way of saying the same thing.

People arn't forced to sit through something disturbing that they don't want to see in a movie any more than in a book or a game. It might have an effect on you but that doesn't mean that you can't engage with it any more.

I recently read Specimen Days by Michael Cunningham. Parts or it were disturbing, especially in the first story. I neither gave up on or read it one session, there was no sense that I just had to passively sit back and wait for it to end. It was just a well written book with an engaging story that I wanted to read.

Just be thankful that nobody made the Rez trance vibrator reference and was modded +5.

You say that people only stay in movies after being disturbed because they are stunned. I acutally walked out of a movie once after being disturbed, but that might just be because I'm weird. Once something hooks you emotionally at that level you are more likely to want to find out more about it, I walked back into that movie then bought it on dvd. I've certainly read disturbing books that I haven't given up on.

  12. Sanitarium on When Will Games Disturb Us? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I found the game Sanitarium fairly disturbing at some points. Incase anyone missed it, it was a point and click adventure where the player assumes the role of a mental patient. You drift between fantasy and reality and try to sort out your memories, and save the world or something. I forget.

It's disturbing not because it tries to shock you with weird stuff, which it certainly tries to do and doesn't do that well. It's disturbing because as you play through the fantasy worlds you get the impression that something very wrong is going on in the real world that you are powerless to stop.

The answer to how to keep players playing disturbing games is so simple that it's sort of depressing that people get mystified and ask if it is even possible in games. Give the game a compelling story, what they are going through now may be disturbing but maybe the characters and scenario will develop. You could also, like, make the game fun to play. Worth a try.

I'd hope that the DM would be setting the scene and adding atmosphere rather than doing some of the things that happen in computer game cutscenes. Do they describe events and conversations that the players shouldn't have knowledge of or take control of your character to do and say things that wouldn't have made your character to do?

  23. Re:Xenosaga anyone? on Cinematics Are Killing Gameplay? · · Score: 1

I think that this is what this is all about. Some people really love cutscenes and others don't have much time for them.

When game designers make games they have to work out if hit and miss content like this skippable. Even if they make it skippable the type of person who wants to skip content like this is going to be annoyed if they think they are missing out on something.

In a multiplayer game marmite content like this really has no place, unless everyone in the party likes marmite. (http://www.marmite.com/)

Personnally, I don't play that many japanese RPGs because I don't like the long conversations where the only option is to press a button to show the next dialog and the level grinding random encounters. In general any game that starts with a really long cut scene annoys me. If the cutscene is before a hard boss or before the first save point in ages I find the game almost unplayable.

Final fantasy games don't need cutscenes to be Role playing games but they apparently do need them to be Squaresoft games. Many RPG games do quite well without them, and I hear that Dungeon Masters in pen and paper games often don't have the time and resources to develop short CGI films to make their games more entertaining.
