People are under this false impression that they can just go buy a program that will retroactively fix any and all virii and spyware. This is a lot of times impossible. Once a virus or spyware truly infiltrates your system you most likely have to reload Windows and then load antivirus/spyware protection from scratch (like they should have all along).
The Windows registry is craptastic, but it exists and as long as it does many virii and spyware will be able to prevent repair software from installing successfully.
You can't really expect Symantec to log into your computer remotely and hack your registry enough to install their software and then remove all of the bad stuff for you for free.
End users are idiots.
To be perfectly honest, there is probably no study out there performed by a reputable research company that can show the network stack in Linux is THIS MUCH faster than the Windows network stack.
In fact, I would be willing to be the driver on the Compaq running windows for the network card is the compaq-provider driver and is rather stale, or even better the NIC may be a different revision than the one in the other compaq running Linux. Also, if the download speed test was performed in Windows first, chances are that Comcast had the files cached for a quicker download if the tests were performed back to back.
There are too many variables to warrant this post even being displayed, and there are no whitepapers out there that will back this performance difference.
just shout "Well-well look. I already told you!! I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people? "
I haven't seen any applications for Windows that require you to be logged in as an Administrator to RUN THEM, only to install them, which is how most operating systems handle installations.
Having said that, the article sort of disturbs me in that MEDICAL EQUIPMENT is run on Windows. Why are manufacturers abandoning QNX or embedded systems to do these mission critical tasks? I have a couple Windows boxes on my linux-dominant home network, and they haven't crashed on me since I built them over a year ago, not one application hang, crash or error, but there are still a lot more layers of potential for a crash than there are with single-task oriented platforms.
I will say this though, I really want to get one of the new cars out there with the Windows Media based system, 80gb in the dash and a video player, etc. It may be Microsoft but it's pretty cool
If I had some very classified information that was super-important, $1000 or less for a round trip ticket to anywhere in the world would be money well spent.
so you can't play online games for a couple days --- who cares? Filing a class action lawsuit? What the hell is wrong with people these days? It's just a gaming console
I look at the couple of neighbor's open APs as redundant backups for when my internet connection is down (with at&t as the telephony co, it happens a bit)
I used to say "If I could purchase a track for a buck i'd buy more music, because then I wouldn't have to buy 10 or so other crappy songs with it on an album" Then the itunes store came around -- then i realized i couldn't easily transfer songs to my non-apple mp3 player
i think now i WILL actually buy some music in digital form --- kudos to amazon
Office 2007 provides a ton of new features, as well as saves documents in an XML format instead of the older format.
I personally want my kid to be learning the office environment that most of the employers out there are operating on.
Very few people like Microsoft, but it's the standard, why make your kid use some inferior product simply to prove a point?
An ipod is plugged into an unauthorized computer and all of a sudden dozens of crappy songs are downloaded to it... songs that no one wants to hear like

I have met and went to school with far more articulate kids than this boy. I don't understand why people are stating that he speaks well. It sounds EXACTLY how I would imagine a young boy to speak about a science project to his teacher.
Do YOU honestly think that dell is going to give a $300 pricebreak for getting Ubuntu instead of Vista?
NO.
They have to pay for all that extra support somehow.
Buying a Dell PC without an OS was only $50 cheaper than buying with Windows before, so I dont see a huge price markdown
Nearly every time i am in a room with someone who yawns, i yawn. I do not yawn too often on my own, sometimes i can go 5 nights in a row without a yawn. But if I see or even SENSE a yawn in the room, I yawn.
Also, reading the article and seeing the word YAWN made me yawn. It's a psychological thing possibly, but whatever makes it contagious, IT IS.
Juris Law --- which is used by a ton of lawyers, will not work on vista at all.
Jonas Construction software -- which is used by MOST large industrial A/C contractors, gets random errors printing forms due to vista.
Also, this is moreso a minor bug with vista, but when installing Adobe Acrobat 8.0, if you have User Account Control turned OFF, it errors out and says the TEMP FOLDER is full... i've seen a couple of apps that need UAC turned on to install, seems stupid
there are a bunch of others i've run into on the job, i'll keep you informed as the calls come in
Any application that was written to use the Documents & Settings folder to store some information/install does not work.
I get 3-5 reports a day of clients that wanted to be bleeding-edge and go with new vista machines and their software doesn't work.
Maybe they should buy new software, but I'm just stating what I'm seeing in the real-world.

Even most Mac-centric firms use Microsoft Office

That, and he has a lisp.
Yeah, excellent speaker.
