WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Release Date Announced
Mini-Geek and many others tipped news that Blizzard has announced the release date for Wrath of the Lich King , World of Warcraft's second expansion. It will be in stores on November 13th in the US and Europe. They've also released details about the contents of the Collector's Edition. Wrath will be preceded by a large content patch, which will expand the talent trees and include many of the gameplay changes set for the expansion (including the consolidation of spell damage and healing into 'spellpower,' achievements, and a new profession). The patch was installed on the public test realm yesterday, and the current patch notes are available.
* "It'll be more of the same."
* "You can never win an MMORPG. It's a never-ending treadmill."
* "Thank God I got off that crack a year ago."
* "It won't be as good as Eve/Warhammer/etc."
* "Blizzard isn't going to get another one of my dollars after that DMCA bullshit."
* "I'm waiting for Diablo 3/StarCraft 2."
* "I hate PC games. Console games rule."
I think I've covered the major ones. On that note, I have my copy on preorder.
I'm a part of the beta right now, as well as a few friends and guildmates. Sure, there are bugs now given that it's beta, and I don't expect it to be bug-free at release, but... given how many fundamental things are broken right now (continents crashing regularly, critical talents for some class builds not working, etc), I wonder how they plan to have this out in less than two months.
Then again, I'm a sucker, so I'll be buying it anyway.
Burning Crusade was a great add-on, and I expect that this new one will be just as good. Sure, some people will complain that they have to buy content AND pay a monthly fee, but I only have to buy it once. If they skimped on the content I'd be upset too, but they don't. I'll get far more playing time out of this add-on than I have gotten out of any other recent game purchase.
For I moment I interpreted the headline as meaning they just created a http://wow.slashdot.org/ category. plz dont.
Option 6 please. Oh and to make this quicker please just use the boilerplate examples provided.
you insensitive clod, now what are we supposed to talk about?

* "It won't be as good as Eve/Warhammer/etc."
Uh, I've been playing etc online for like a week. That game was crap. Eve/WAR maybe, but etc, never.
Of Code And Men
OK, there are undoubtedly people who want to live the experience of dressing up as their favorite elf maiden and waiting in line for hours to get the box at midnight, but seriously. All you really need to buy is a key to upgrade your account. Then they can let people download the client a week before the official launch date and flip a switch at launch time to enable the new content. No waiting, no order shortages, and they can use the money they saved from not having to make 50 million discs to buy gold or something.
* "You can never win an MMORPG. It's a never-ending treadmill."
Yeah, but my doctor says I need the exercise.

I said that if you play WoW the add-on is a good deal, and it is. You're arguing that WoW itself isn't a good deal. You might believe that, but that's not what I said.

This is good for everybody, for those who want to roll a DK right away, they can hang out in plague lands and the outland for a couple of weeks while everybody else hits the northrend, less competition for quests and resources.

I hope they manage to fix the issues currently affecting users running the game in OpenGL mode (most wine users.)
My wife and I are currently trying to beta test WotLK on our systems at home with wine, but many areas, upon entering, completely white out the screen. Running the game in Direct3D mode will fix the issue, but at a severe performance penalty. The parts of the game that do have working graphics seem to be quite buggy as well. I don't really think two months will be enough time to straigten out all the bugs, so it will be interesting to see how things proceed from here.
Our friends at ManaPotions.com would beg to differ.

For over a year now we have been grinding reputation, grinding gold, and grinding gear. Tier 4, Tier 5, Tier 6, Sunwell, Endless wipes on Kalecgos... And now, back to square one.
Now with "improved" talents, more level grinding, more rep grinding, special attention to things like _hair cuts_.
Completely ignore things that are really important to some people. A self sustaining economy, a trade system that is GOOD or even marginally good... Those who have played Eve KNOW a good trade skill system, and economy...
Professions that actually make money for the player instead of being an endless pit for us to wastefully throw gold at to the the 2-3 really good items that get replaced in a couple months when we clear Naxx...
I digress... I will buy the expansion, and I will play, and grind, etc. I will not be happy about it. I just cannot leave because there is nothing better yet. When there is, I and may others will just go elsewhere. Why? Because Blizzard is tuning the game to people who only play an hour a day.
Remember when "Epic" meant something? When they didn't just drop from the last boss in a 5 man?

Heh, just a day? Been hearing about people taking off an entire week to play when the expansion hits. I probably play World of Warcraft too much, and I can't say I've got my life priorities strait but I sure as hell wouldn't blow a weeks vacation to play WoW. I sure hope the servers don't totally crash for like 3 days when the expansion hits or some of these people are going to be pretty pissed.
liek my bff jill? Sorry, had to...
Welcome to Slashdot, you must be old here.
Knowledge is power. Knowledge shared is power lost.
Not if you play so much that you forget to eat.
but I don't want to be a tank. I like my 2handed sword spec arms warrior, and that setup relies a lot on the use of mortal strike + high crit rating. not to mention rend + hamstring.
to make it so that a 2handed Warrior (who has a slower swing time then anybody else in the game) has to waste 2 or more swings (one for hamstring and at least 1 for pummel) and get no damage, fine! but I want frost nova to not do damage, I want entangling roots to not not damage.... and so on and so on...
Its bad enough that warriors still do not have an "escape" skill, now you are going to nerf the warriors few abilities that counteract other classes escape.
"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore."
My response to the upcoming expansion has been to greatly reduce my time spent playing. It just seems like the current game has lost some of it's charm now that a chunk of new content is on the way. I'm sure that when the expansion hits I'll spend a huge amount of time playing it, but until then I'll focus my spare time on other entertainment options.
Roll a druid. Use the following macro.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, watch it -- I'm huge!
I mean, really... "Wrath of the licking"? ...Yeah, I'd like to see that one.
Bow-ties are cool.
I'm no warrior guru, but I'm pretty sure that instant attacks don't affect your swing timer, so hamstring and pummel (both currently and in WoLK) waste no swings at all.
In addition, I suspect that the pummel and hamstring do no damage changes are because they are now off the global cooldown, which is really a plus (they do next to no damage anyways).
Oh, and mages and druids could care less if frost nova/entangling roots did no damage. Would be better for both of them. Frost nova would no longer break cc, and entangling roots would no longer cause itself to break early.
I rigged up a "desk" such that I can use my computer while I pedal my stationary bike. (the bike doesn't fit anywhere near my regular desk.) Works pretty well. 300 kcal/day easy just playing WoW. It would even be a decent CV workout if I actually cranked it, instead of the leisurely rate I do.
I'm sure you can do something similar with a treadmill, but first you have to take the boxes off of it and get it out of the basement. Probably wouldn't work with a rowing machine, weight bench or bowflex (but taking the boxes off of those and the drying clothes off the bowflex would be a good start though.)
More music, fewer hits

actually, after careful reading of the 3.0.2 patch notes, a number of people came to the conclusion that it was more of a weakening of the rogue class, and that what most warriors lose they gain equal replacements - at least in terms of being able to p0wn rogues who try to one-shot them.
-- Tigger warning: This post may contain tiggers! --
No, $800 for one game is not a great deal at all. There is not enough effort put into it on the development side to justify such an extravagant price tag. Furthermore, if you can be entertained sufficiently by playing just that one game for hours and hours then it is quite likely that you can be perfectly entertained with less expensive options, like Neverwinter Nights or Diablo II or a ball of yarn.
Actually, in my RP guild, Squirrelly Wrath, one of the preconditions for guild leveling will become use of the /hug and /love actions with squirrels, as well as killing off of heretic squirrels, so I can see how bailing from an instance is less important than a guild raid.
But on a PvP server, this might be critical - do we get credit for drops due to server disconnects, as I've frequently had that happen ...
-- Tigger warning: This post may contain tiggers! --
Consider that:
- Blizzard released the WotLK right after Mythic released their new trailer.
- Blizzard announced the WotLK release date the week of Warhammer's release.
- Blizzard copied the achievements system from the Tome of Knowledge and attempted a world PvP zone with Lake Wintergrasp (I say "attempted" because it's fun for maybe 10 minutes...).
- Blizzard is re-running its Shatner and Mister-T commercials.
They do indeed seem surprisingly reactionary. Having played Warhammer's early release this weekend, I think I can understand why--it's a surprisingly good game with the potential of drawing in a lot of players, including casual players, which was what WoW was originally lauded for before it turned into a grindfest. Also, fuck the Arena.
Hmmm.
Achievements predate online RPGs - they were part of FTF RPGs much earlier, in fact some AD&D systems had them in the 80s.
Haircuts are really there because, let's face it, we all want to be a Nightelf Mohawk riding on a Frostsaber. Well, except for when we're a pink-pigtailed Gnome Mage riding on her psychedelic flying carpet ...

Actually, now you can be an herbalist and bring in the big bucks since the DC class requires your ingredients for their abilities.
And, to be quite frank, there's a lot more of us who can only spare an hour every day or two than there are people who depend on their mom to tend to their basic needs ...
-- Tigger warning: This post may contain tiggers! --
I think it's probably an emergent property of the nature of the game.
WoW has three advantages that make it uniquely poised to flood slashdot with news. 1) It's monstrously huge. 2) It's online. 3) It's social.
For the first point, it's fairly obvious that having a large player base inherently means you have a lot of people interested in news about the game.
Second, we can assume that everyone who plays the game has a basic modicum of internet skills. All WoW players are potential readers, while the same can not be said of everyone who plays Mario Galaxy.
Third, the social nature of the game further pushes the demographic toward sites such as Slashdot. The people who play WoW don't just want to read about it, they want to talk about it even if it's with people who don't play WoW.
The only other game bearing those three attributes is Spore. Incidentally, the only other game with as much Slashdot coverage is also Spore.

In a seemingly sleazy move, GameStop has added a $15 "Handling Fee" to the WotLK Collector's Edition. Not a SHIPPING and Handling fee mind you, shipping is extra. This is just straight grafting in the style of:

Weeellp, the box is all the way over there on the shelf and I'm kinda tired... maybe an extra $15 could motivate me to lean over there and get it for you. All of your quoted nerfs have associated godly buffs that make said changes a drop in the bucket. For example, a cooldown-less, chance-to-activate-on-bleeds overpower. Granted all these are my opinions. Myself, I am giving Warhammer a run. I know they also released this before it was ready, but at least its new. And in all my years of MMO, Camelot had the most fun PvP scenarios with its siege warfare. I was in the Warhammer open beta and I can say they have kept with Camelots good traits. (although I wish there were 3 sides...supposedly it comes down to story line...boo..but I digress...hehe) Anyway, I hope WoW's expansions lives up to its acclaim, because if it doesn't, when the rest of you decide to check out Warhammer, my toon will be fighting in the upper tier realm vs. realm... =P
I should end this by stating I had tons of fun in WoW when it first came out. Blizzard had managed to fix so many things that were wrong with fantasy MMO's, eliminating much of the stuff that was just a time waster. Sadly, I think they are falling into this trap now just to keep subscribers. Once gameplay starts to suffer for the bottom line, thats when I start to get bored, and fast. Again, IMHO.
You forgot:
And with one quick stroke, Blizzard, again, swipes the legs out from your stool of achievement. Your only hope to regain your previous uber is to purchase the expansion, keep paying your monthly fees, and ultimately try to not think that all your future effort will be trashed as easily soon.
Modding me -1 troll doesn't make me wrong.

Thank goodness. Warriors are the most OPed class in PvP.
I've met Zealots but what are trolls - are they a new Zerg troop type?
On that front, when are we going to get World of Starcraft...?
'Don't worry' said the trees when they saw the axe coming, 'The handle is one of us.'
Not a WOW player myself, but of my friends who do play WOW I'd say about 2/5th are women. Gamer girlies are not as rare as you think - my other half's managed to rack up about 150 hours in Oblivion and it's only that low cos' I want time on the 360 too...

Excuse me for being pedantically obvious but isn't StarCraft 2 developed by Blizzard? You claim you are going to buy it yet you iterated before that you shall not give Blizzard another of your dollars.

Ummm.... No.
My husband and I recently bought a second 360 so we didn't have to fight over who got to play Oblivion =) He plays on the projector screen and I play on the TV, in the same room.
Really, gaming together isn't much different than watching TV together. Gaming is interactive and often involves problem/puzzle solving, and for me at least is much more fun than watching the same 5 plots get repeated week after week on TV.
For what it's worth, we both also play WoW, along with two other couples. So I believe there are more women out there than a lot of people would like to think.
I prefer to play "e.g." myself (for example).
"Etc" just goes on, and on...

Old patch notes get +5 Informative ratings? Fuck /. let's just start calling is WoWDot
Thanks to eating disorders most chicks are reasonably good looking these days.

I guess our views on the game are quite different. I actually enjoyed working for my epics pre-bc. We worked hard for them, and when you walked around in epics, people understood that you busted your ass to get them.
My main problem with the game, is that it's catering to people who want end-game items just handed to them.
If you are one of those lazy people, thanks, you ruined the game. If you only have 1 hour to spend in the game a day, you should be in blues, and happy about it.
I still play the game because I still enjoy end game content, and I expect I'll simply roll over and deal with the shortcomings at this point, because I still have friends in the game who play. I have had many more friends however, who have left the game, because of these same issues.
Thanks for the obligatory comment about living with parents, I would only have expected that on the WoW Forums, not on Slashdot. I would imagine that people who actually post here would be well out of their parents house, most with actual carriers, and kids. I guess not.
Now to figure out how to spell check my signature...

Fourth point, with 10 million subs do think Blizzard cares what Mythic does?
Why do people keep saying this? What planet do you live on where company executives and shareholders do not care about their revenues?
Complacency is not a laudable attribute for a company. If they do in fact think "we have 10 million subscribers, what do we care?" then they are setting themselves up for failure. They have other projects in the works that require funding, infrastructure costs, payroll costs, and shareholder expectations to uphold (regardless of them being publicly traded or not). If their revenues go down, they have to answer questions and run the risk of not having the funding to uphold their budget. Do you really think Blizzard doesn't care about that?
Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that 1 million people leave wow for warhammer and cancel their accounts (numbers completely made up). $10/month for each customer, that's $10 million/month gone, $120 million/year. Do you really think they're not going to notice or care about that? I can tell you anyone who's invested with an expectation of return upon that investment is going to care and ask a lot of uncomfortable questions. Wall street has destroyed companies for failing to meet projected earnings by $120 million over a year. I don't see how blizzard is magically immune to that because they make WoW and have 10 million subscribers currently.
Or to make a bad analogy: imagine telling your spouse you got docked 10% of your paycheck for the next year.
Most probably aren't. I'm referring to actual friends, who I met first FTF, and of my friends, most of those who play WoW are actually women.
Actually, they're way more hard-core than I am.
But, yeah, most of the pixels running around may not be women - strangely, they tend to choose male characters.

Various servers - one is on Sen'jin, but they seem to be all spread out on servers.

A Wow Expansion pack makes the slashdot frontpage? Someone (indirectly) complaining gets modded flamebait? Are there really that many WoW players here on slashdot???
A Blizzard game is popular? Shocking!
Strongly considering taking the 14th off work, 1. it's a Friday, 2. it isn't released until the 14th in Aust - probably a midnight launch again where my order is held.
Confirming my CE copy today (fingers crossed). EB Australia won't take pre-orders for the Ce until it's officially announced but will convert the first X# of pre-orders to CEs. My preorders are now 1 year and 1 week old. :)

What's the diff? (other than the focus on N's)
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, watch it -- I'm huge!
Entangling roots not do damage - sure. Given it's the only CC in the game that has a chance to break itself (it breaks on damage), I"d accept that trade.
How about you make it so that people can't attack from Entangling Roots while you're about it.

I bought Neverwinter Nights recently. Do you have any suggestions about where to look for good mods? Thanks!

If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating

Why strange? Perhaps they do if for the same reason the men does it: Pleasing curves ;)

Well, I must admit my male blood elf hunter looks all spiffy in his leathers and furs ...
