I couldn't help but think about this after reading the article...
At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release (by Mr. Welch himself) stating:
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason at all, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally, executing a manoeuver such as a left-turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, and you would have to reinstall the engine.
4. When your car died on the freeway for no reason, you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought 'Car95' or 'CarNT', and then added more seats.
6. Apple would make a car powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would run on only five per cent of the roads.
7. Oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single 'general car default' warning light.
8. New seats would force every-one to have the same size butt.
9. The airbag would say 'Are you sure?' before going off.
10. Occasionally, for no reason, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed the radio antenna.
11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of road maps from Rand-McNally (a subsidiary of GM), even though they neither need them nor want them. Trying to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50 per cent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
12. Every time GM introduced a new model, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
13. You would press the 'start' button to shut off the engine.
...Also, I notice - they're the last to switch their lights on when it starts to get dark - or when there's fog/spray on the motorways....
Most of these cars have an "Auto" setting for their headlights. It's a set it, and forget it kind of thing. While it may appear they are careless about their headlights, it's really just another convenience of driving a "higher end" car.
I imagine it has something to do with people's self appearance. Some people feel they are inadequate, or weak, one short coming or another. So they compensate by driving a car which has an aggressive appearance, or something they feel others will perceive as .
It may or may not have anything to do with their actual attitude.
How funny that an add for "The Flexible Shaft Ratcheting Screwdriver" from ThinkGeek shows up, in an HIV/AIDS thread, and it's tag line is "More flexible screwing".
I guess our views on the game are quite different. I actually enjoyed working for my epics pre-bc. We worked hard for them, and when you walked around in epics, people understood that you busted your ass to get them.
My main problem with the game, is that it's catering to people who want end-game items just handed to them.
If you are one of those lazy people, thanks, you ruined the game. If you only have 1 hour to spend in the game a day, you should be in blues, and happy about it.
I still play the game because I still enjoy end game content, and I expect I'll simply roll over and deal with the shortcomings at this point, because I still have friends in the game who play. I have had many more friends however, who have left the game, because of these same issues.
Thanks for the obligatory comment about living with parents, I would only have expected that on the WoW Forums, not on Slashdot. I would imagine that people who actually post here would be well out of their parents house, most with actual carriers, and kids. I guess not.
Now to figure out how to spell check my signature...
For over a year now we have been grinding reputation, grinding gold, and grinding gear. Tier 4, Tier 5, Tier 6, Sunwell, Endless wipes on Kalecgos... And now, back to square one.
Now with "improved" talents, more level grinding, more rep grinding, special attention to things like _hair cuts_.
Completely ignore things that are really important to some people. A self sustaining economy, a trade system that is GOOD or even marginally good... Those who have played Eve KNOW a good trade skill system, and economy...
Professions that actually make money for the player instead of being an endless pit for us to wastefully throw gold at to the the 2-3 really good items that get replaced in a couple months when we clear Naxx...
I digress... I will buy the expansion, and I will play, and grind, etc. I will not be happy about it. I just cannot leave because there is nothing better yet. When there is, I and may others will just go elsewhere. Why? Because Blizzard is tuning the game to people who only play an hour a day.
Remember when "Epic" meant something? When they didn't just drop from the last boss in a 5 man?
I agree with you 100%. I also give a test to all possible new-hires. Nothing too crazy. I manage a technical support group, and with out some real-world working knowledge of what we deal with (mail flow, exchange, AD, etc.) they can be seriously hindered in helping out customers.
Now I don't hire based solely on the test, but it gives me an idea of what they know. I try to keep the test simple, now however, I've learned that asking difficult questions tends to alienate candidates, even good ones.
However, when you can't tell me what service generally runs on port 25... well... yeah. It's not ICMP./facepalm
So I followed the link to http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/ - even installed the Silverlight plugin, against my best judgment just to check out this "new and exciting" technology... and it just looks like fairly high rez images. While that's all fine and dandy... it's nothing spectacular to me.
Not to mention, when I went from http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/ to http://www.slashdot.org/ Firefox crashed. Way to go MS. Thanks for reaffirming my feelings about how fscking horrible every piece of software that comes out of your company is./rant
Interesting read, however I don't see these things holding a useful amount of data by 2010. Even if they can get 4G capacity on these chips it still wont replace hard drives that hold terabytes of data.
Although it could make really cool applications for OS installs. Could you imagine your favorite OS installed on something as fast or faster then today's RAM? I don't want to think about the cost of 4G of this stuff though. *shiver*
You can't just say "All of the Bible is literal", or "All of the Bible is not literal". It's quite obvious that some of it is supposed to be a recount of what happened at a given timeframe, and some is story telling to teach values.
Seriously, you're as bad as some of the Christian Fundamentalists who say the Bible SHOULD all be taken literally. I think perhaps you're doing this just for sake of argument.
I don't care about those who think you guys favor one person over another. Frankly, they're putting WAY too much of their pride into this. I happen to love slashdot the way it is, and don't want anything to change. I read this site daily, and have never had any qualms with stories posted here, other then the one or two that I read a couple days previous.
Keep the faith man. You're doing things right. Remember, this is your site. Readers don't pay to read. Hell they don't even have to register if they don't want to. 90% of slashdot readers could care less who submitted the freaking story. What your readers want is content, not who posted what.
To the readers and submitters who have cried and moaned about not getting your stories posted. Read what should be done when submitting a story, follow those guidelines, and maybe, just maybe, you'll have enough content to be worthy of a story here on this beloved site. Quit yer complaining!
Still, it's pretty wild that something like this even happened at all. With all the safeguards, and all the people supposed to be watching this type of activity... NO ONE caught it? A lot of people are going to lose their jobs over this one. Luckily they didn't really sell them for 1 yen each. Imagine how hard their market would've taken a fall then?
Im curious how this is going to effect the business itself.
You just need those 3d glasses from Avatar. Works for me...
Anyone else read that as "Cow On America"?
No...? Screw you guys, I got a laugh out of it.
That this thread will consist only of positive remarks, and supportive statements towards Microsoft.
...with truth, justice, and the American way!

We simply need to drill Haley's comet.
1.) Fly to comet.
2.) Drill for ice.
3.) Drop giant ice cube in ocean.
4.) Profit $$$ (survive?)
(no need to worry about raising sea levels or anything of course.)
and somehow Im in the wrong article... =/
sigh.

Oh man, those were priceless! Of course, so are grass clippings.
Which are incidentally, when mixed with pastel water paints, the same color as the Style Sheet above.

I managed to get a new Gateway laptop a couple months ago for $1200. Intel Core2 Duo 2.0Ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, and MILLIONS of colors.
The Macbook pro which seemed comparable was $2500 if I remember correctly. So I beg to differ!
Not to mention I actually get millions of colors...
Did I mention that already?

God forbid someone from the open source community gets ahold of it. It might actually work.
