Capaldi wouldn't fit in with the "sexy young geek" thing they've been going with since the beginning of this latest resurgence. Putting in a fifty-something actor after several 20-30-ish types might alienate a lot of their new younger fans. Sad, but true.

I was willing to give Matt Smith a chance, and he was much better than I had feared, but I'm tired of this race to prepubescence. And while we're talking crazy paradoxes, I actually kind of liked Paul McGann. His TARDIS console room was easily my favorite of all time. If they're not going to give us Catherine Tate, bring back Eight as Twelve. Make it have something to do with the Valeyard if you want. Just give me an actor who doesn't look like he's twelve.

Except this has been said so many times, it's now not radical at all. I don't particularly agree since the reason is nearly always for political reasons, not storytelling reasons. Though I trust Steven Moffat to make a good decision.

I would agree and be a bit more general.
Before he became the showrunner, I loved every episode that he wrote – and most things he did.
Since he became showrunner, there has only been 2 or 3 epsiode that I felt were great.

I don't have any clue who Rupert Grint or Peter Capaldi are, but I don't freak out over Dr Who choices, because they have proven themselves to be pretty capable in choosing great actors. I was so delighted by Christopher Eccleston that I didn't want to accept the new guy. Then I was such a fan of him and his personality that I absolutely refused to give any consideration to Matt Smith (the guy looked weird and was too young and too awkward), and now I am already going to miss the hell out of him.
So, whoever these guys are, I have no real reason to be worried. The show hinges very much on affinity for the doctor and his companions and they haven't let us down. It's also great to know that if, for some reason, you *dislike* the doctor or companion at any given time, it's only a couple years or so until we roll the dice again.
That said, I would like to see them go back to (at least for one generation) an elderly man. Or, at least, an over the hill one. Even a female would be okay (though I understand that maybe doctors do not change sexes -- and not for some "it's only fair blah blah blah sexism" reason.. just because it might be interesting to see the doctor as a woman just one time).

He was 41 at the time, but could have passed for younger.
Eccles was good, and very underestimated. He gave Dr Who a bit of noir. The lang black coat suited very well.

I'd be interested to see what Grint could do with the role, and I wouldn't count him out for the future. And no, he's not 12 anymore (making a movie at 12 doesn't make you 12 forever.) The most exciting suggestion was Tilda Swinton; she would be magnificent! And yeah, the Catherine Tate thing could work too; the Doctor is dead--oh, wait, remember that there was a hybrid...

Especially since his acting is not good enough.
I think maintaining the balance between comedy, drama, political satire, science fiction while riding a often (seemingly) ridiculous plot requires very good acting.

Nah, he lacks the child-like enthusiasm and curiosity that is pretty much required for a doctor, in my mind anyways. I agree with the AC: he'd make a fantastic Master, but not so much a Doctor. Besides, he's probably too busy being Smaug/Sherlock.

I'd like to see him as an evil 12th regeneration of the Doctor, that steals new regenerations like the Master did on Traken. They have to do something to get around the regeneration limit; Why not have an evil doctor for half a season, then have the 13th regeneration full of regret like nine.

If it was self-imposed by the Time Lords, the Master could have just ignored their edict, since regeneration can't rely on Gallifrey.
Obviously it's just a story, so they can change it any way they like, but I'd like to see them do more than just retcon, and actually have something happen to the Doctor to extend his regenerations. They could have explained it as absorbing energy when destroying Gallifrey during the time war, but just saying it was voluntary is weak. 12 regenerations probably seemed like plenty to the writers back in the day. I doubt anyone expected the show to go on for this long.

The fourth doctor was airing new seasons when I started watching and I thought they were great episodes all the way back to the first doctor. Looking back now I remember them being much better than I think they are now just like battlestar galactica when it first aired I enjoyed every episode but just couldn't watch it now.
Matt Smith would be my favorite doctor, check with me in a couple decades and we will see if that is still true.

OK, I'll feed the troll: The paid for TV service where I live broadcasts top gear pretty much as a day after the BBC in the UK. I happen to on occasion pirate it because I can get it about a day sooner and watch it on my laptop which travels with me instead of my paid for satellite TV service. Now, I've paid for the damn thing, and I'm watching the damn thing. Am I cheap or lazy? Or perhaps I just want a service (and am willing to pay for) that the idiot networks aren't willing to provide? Perhaps it isn't quite as arbitrarily clear cut as you seem to think?

Unfortunately the broken cog in your story is that you're not really the user group he's referring to. Don't think that you're the norm, that everyone legitimately has access to this but chooses to pirate for usability reasons.
It's also worth mentioning in your example, you're actually depriving the network of advertising revenue by pirating it, unless you also watch it that day later as it shows up on your local network.

Advertising revenue? In South Africa? BBC Entertainment consists of advertising for (guess what?) BBC Entertainment. As with Discovery and Nat Geo, so no, no advertising lost. Their costs are covered by my US$ 80 subscription. Perhaps I am not the group he is referring to, but that does not imply that I (or my colleagues) abruptly cease to exist.... Admittedly discovery advertises a process control company(Nelson Concentrators, during Gold Rush Alaska) with which I admittedly have association with, but then I'm hardly likely to buy my own product am I? A surprisingly large number of people here subscribe to DSTV... And we still don't get why you would want to advertise a channel you're already watching....

Not much of a cliffhanger. Of course he's some between-eight-and-nine version that ended the time war. The interesting thing will be to find out how he did it. What is the "Moment?" How did it simultaneously destroy both the Timelords and the Daleks? Well, most of the Daleks. Actually, he screwed up the bit about destroying the Daleks pretty bad. How many managed to slip through? Plus like a million hiding in the Void. Plus Davros survived.
Okay, let me start over. Of course he's the one who ended the Time War by destroying the Time Lords and probably at least a majority of the Daleks. The question is, how did he do it? What exactly did he do? What is the "Moment," and how come it worked so well against Time Lords and so poorly against Daleks?

The Moment. Not really canon. I prefer to think that it's mostly meant in a metaphorical sense - "the Doctor possesses the moment" to mean that he has control of the situation, but in some sort of Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey way that also makes it some kind of physical, tangible object...
In other words, it was yet another thing RTD slipped in just because it sounded cool and mysterious, which someone else has gone and ruined by writing a backstory for.

Well, other than himself and the Master, hiding at the end of the universe. River Song just kind of absorbed some Timer Lordiness because Amy and Rory were consummating in the TARDIS. That's a WAY better score than the Dalek from "Dalek," plus the Dalek Emporer, plus the Cult of Skaro, plus about a million in the Genesis Ark, plus freaking Davros. The Daleks have a pretty robust population considering the number of times the Doctor has committed genocide against them, including killing their creator at least three times that I can think of off the top of my head.

Having Moffat write occasional fantasy episodes was fine, and resulted in some great Doctor Who, but turning the whole series into a fantasy show was a mistake. They should have a science fiction fan at the helm.

During the Eccleston and Tennant years, Davies' scripts were mediocre/bad. It was only Moffat that wrote the good stories (e.g., The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace, and, probably the best story in the new series, Blink).
Given stories like that, I was really excited when Moffat took over from Davies, but, sadly, now that's he's lead writer, the stores are back to being mediocre/bad. It might be because being lead writer, nobody has the guts to tell him his scripts are rubbish and go back and rewrite them.

Same, Moffat is fine for the one off deals, and he did a great job with them; but writing longer over arcing plots does not seem to be his strong suit. I think this last one was pretty weak compared to all the others.
Come to think of it, did they ever resolve the Exploding Tardis storyline? Didn't seem to be explicitly stated, and best guess was The Silence, but also in the final moments there was a voice speaking on one of the monitors and The Silence have not been shown to speak.

I was expecting the resolution to the Impossible Girl to be a little better than a burst of technobabble and some flashing lights rushed in at the end of the final episode. A year long arc resolved in 10 minutes, wth, tacked on to the end of another story episode.

Tennant did the best Doctor ever .. and his story with Rose .. wow .
If that is not the best love story ever this side the galaxy , they were fantastic together. The stories were great. That's what got me hooked on.
Smith also done a very good job .. but rarely the scenarios were as good and up to par with his talent.
I guess that the next 50 years will keep us riveted . Long life to the Doctor. ! Cheers .

Being a showrunner is one of the toughest jobs in showbiz. It is easy to be spread too thin. Just because Moffat is not doing great does not mean anyone else can do better. To me, it suggests that they need fresh blood amongst the stable of non-lead writers.

Not sure I agree here, some of Davies' scripts seemed ridiculous. The Idiot's Lantern was cringe-making. The finale story arcs where the entire universe is about to be destroyed until the plot introduces a big red reset button at the end were boring. The Dalek stories were simply shit. Cybermen/Dalek face-off ? Corny. I think Davies' best (and most touching) story was Love & Monsters.
Moffatt approaches the stories in a different way, for sure, and some of his writing is sublime. He seems to have a better sense of The Doctor being a rather mysterious, enigmatic figure.

They just keep making the same mistake 10+ times, don't they? THIS TIME hire an actor that will sign a 10 year contract and shows intent to actually stay with the show. In England, the actor who plays Doctor Who is the highest level of attainable status, one level higher than the queen herself. But nope, the last asshole thought "maybe I can do better" or "I just need to be making less money" or "I like movies better" and dropped out after a mere, what 2 or 3 years? Pathetic. Definitely a slap in the face to fans. So this time, I really don't care who it is as long as they actually stay with the series.

In England the change over of Dr Who actors is now treated like a big celebrity event - it's in all the papers, TV, magazines. The BBC knows what it's doing - Eccleston taught them that lesson --- lots of publicity and celebrity news for what is a pretty weak show in many respects. Obviously Eccleston was the true inheritor of Tom Baker's mantle, but that's just for us to agree on... ;)

I actually like the fact that they don't stay around forever because:
1) They (the actor) gets stale after a while
2) The writers get stale trying to write to the strengths of a particular actor
and most importantly
3) If I can't stand the current actor (like some recent ones....), I know I only have to either endure or not watch the show for a couple of years...

But that's part of the Doctor's appeal. He's not just a single personality... he's a complex alien whose latest mentality comes forth upon regeneration. After being forced to commit genocide against his whole species, he's an angry nihilist. Slowly, major events in his life make him a more well-rounded person, and the exrenal changes are the most visible part of that. Frankly, seeing the same Doctor for 10 years would be boring, because a major aspect of the character's development would stall.

Not quite correct, actually. Both Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee were on longer than 4 seasons. Pertwee was on for 5 seasons and Tom Baker was on for 7 seasons.

It would still be nice for them to actually acknowledge this major point of the Doctor Who universe and do something clever with it. Yes, we know that it's possible for Time Lords to achieve more than 12 regenerations. They gave the Master a whole new set (somehow) at one point. But don't just ignore it and pretend like it's not there. Also, they tacitly acknowledged a regeneration limit when River Song used up all her "remaining" regenerations to save the Doctor's life, and then got angry when he "wasted" regeneration energy (which he can apparently just tap at will now) healing her hand. I understand that they're not just going to dump this cash cow once they reach 13 because of an artificial limit they set like 35 years ago. But at least acknowledge it and do something with it.

My personal theory, the 12 regeneration limit was imposed by Timelord society. Now that there isn't one, no real limit exists.

Personally, what I'd like to see is a more deliberative and cunning Doctor, more so than a rogue -- something harkening back to previous doctors. Also more 2-3 episode story arcs. Far too many of the stories seem rushed. The pace needs to be notched down and story given more depth with some more richness to the character. They should pick someone that could carry that sort of role. The only thing I've seen Grint perform in is the Harry Potter movies, and while he did an admirable job as Ron Weasley, I don't know that he'd have the presence to carry the role of the Doctor (perhaps I'm mistaken).

Also, I'd like the Doctor's mortality (and maybe a view into his psyche regarding the subject) to be explored. Presumably, Time Lords have finite regenerations (at one time indicated to be 12) - well, this new Doctor will be at (or nearly at) his final regeneration: will he accept it or struggle to for a way to prolong his life? Will it make him less brash/more timid? Will he consider retirement? Will he seek out his daughter and hand her the torch to become the defender of mankind and meddler in time and space?

If by "his daughter", you mean Jenny, the "clone daughter" from "The Doctor's Daughter", then he wouldn't seek her out. Last he saw her, she died and didn't regenerate. Only after he left did her regeneration kick in (albeit without her changing forms) and she took off to explore the Universe. They could bring her back by having her contact the Doctor or run into him, but why would he seek out someone who he thinks died (and whose timeline doesn't allow for a visit without meeting his past self)?

The Master already busted the 12 regen limit. I wouldn't sweat it, though they could and should make it a big deal. Why is there a limit in the first place? As a safety check should a Time Lord take over? Do other Time Lords accept this and go gently into the night? What if they don't, do the other Time Lords come after them? If they break it, is every regen a Herculean effort or is it like passing the sound barrier? Etc.

I used to watch Doctor Who up until David Tennant left and it can be quite enjoyably, if a little silly & contrived at times.

However, I stopped watching a couple of years back because I was sick of the constant spoilers. If a main character is going to die (or regenerate) then I don't want to know about it months in advance. I want to find out during the show itself and to experience the suspense of not knowing how the episode/season is going to end, until it does.

It's easy enough to avoid spoilers for most shows, as I can just avoid visiting the IMDB forums, but here in the UK it's hard to avoid the press announcements because they plaster them across the front page of the BBC News website and they get picked up by the other news media.

Look at this upcoming 50th anniversary special, for example. We already know certain people and species who will be in the show. There would be a far bigger wow factor if they just showed the episode and let viewers be amazed by what happens.

John Hurt's role was kept under wraps until the broadcast of the latest episode, just as it was meant to be. I agree it's a shame that shows feel they have to divulge "spoilers" (they aren't really that if they've been legitimately revealed), but it's a tough multi-channel world out there and you've got to promote.

Not sure why you feel so strongly about not feeling strongly about it that you need to be a sanctimonious dick and insult the rest of us who still enjoy a bit of Saturday-night escapism, though.

I think Simon Pegg has the right combination of wit and respect for the Sc-Fi genre to do the role justice. Also he has preciously faced John Simm as his nemesis in an episode of 'Spaced'. However I'd love to see Greg Wise in the role - a British Robert Downey JR if ever there was one.

Perhaps there's nobody left alive who remembers the old series. That's the only rationale I can think of to explain how it's possible to have a 12th doctor, when Time Lords are limited to 11 regenerations. Or did they solve thhat one, and I missed it?

The limit is 12 regenerations, not Doctors, therefore the 13th and final Doctor comes after his 12th regeneration. (As a kid, in 1986 I asked John-Nathan Turner what was going to happen when the Doctor hit the limit. "We'll think of something" was the answer). This was made something of a plot device with the Master in the classic series, with the Master having run out of regenerations and being extremely aged/decrepit in a couple of serials, before Anthony Ainley took on the role.
