Facebook Enabled Advertisers To Reach 'Jew Haters' (propublica.org)
ProPublica is reporting that Facebook "enabled advertisers to direct their pitches to the news feeds of almost 2,300 people who expressed interest in the topics of 'Jew hater,' 'How to burn jews,' or, 'History of why jews ruin the world.'" The organization even went so far as to test these ad categories by paying $30 to target those groups with three "promoted posts" -- in which a ProPublica article or post was displayed in their news feeds. Facebook reportedly approved all three ads within 15 minutes. From the report: After we contacted Facebook, it removed the anti-Semitic categories -- which were created by an algorithm rather than by people -- and said it would explore ways to fix the problem, such as limiting the number of categories available or scrutinizing them before they are displayed to buyers. In all likelihood, the ad categories that we spotted were automatically generated because people had listed those anti-Semitic themes on their Facebook profiles as an interest, an employer or a "field of study." Facebook's algorithm automatically transforms people's declared interests into advertising categories. It's not that Facebook is targeting any group; it's this "advertiser" putting in a string which matched.
Much as I dislike Facebook for their intrusiveness, I wouldn't go so far to say that they would have this as a category.

Why shouldn't Propublica be allowed to counter antisemitism with ads? It sounds like an optimistic use of the ad platform. Since the ads are clearly marked it should be appreciated by the prospective antisemites as above-board discussion and not fuel the (increasingly valid, TBQH) complaints of a Jewish censorship conspiracy infiltrating Silicon Valley.
I'm not saying I think Jews are a problem, but I am saying that maybe buying ads is a better approach to countering antisemitism than getting Nazi Troll websites kicked off the Internet via sketchy backdoor deals with registrars and DDoS companies. The latter strategy will probably turn out to be counterproductive, but ads sound more like redirectmethod.org, an approach I think has more hope than liberal censorship.
It's not grouped by political affiliation, it's more or less whether they believe in Jewish conspiracy run from Israel or not. And that in turn depends on the media they consume. (which usually is fringe stuff).
If you flip it over, turn "Jew" to "Muslim", then its very similar with small groups believing that all muslims are somehow controlled by ISIS.

Most Slashdot users should strongly support Black Lives Matter. The goals of BLM include promoting fair and responsible policing, and to eliminate the militarization of the police. Many users on this site believe that the police overstep their authority and violate the Constitution. Those views actually align pretty well with the goals of BLM. While blacks and a few other groups like Muslims are disproportionately targeted by law enforcement, that can just as easily be turned against others. BLM is not at all an anti-white group. They're a group for responsible and fair policing for everyone, and the name simply calls attention to the fact that blacks are disproportionately targeted. If you believe that police abuse their power, then you should support BLM.

One should also remember that a lot of this is just modern propaganda. Protesters are being silenced who criticise the genocide of Palestinians by the state of Israel. Since WW1 Israel has killed more palestinians than Nazis killed Jews. The area where Israel is now hold huge amount of Palestinian at the time of WW1. Their numbers have been reduced to a bare minimum, but they are still allowed to stay alive: if they are all gone, the world realises the scale of the genocide and stops supporting Israel and their allies.
All this has been OK'd by USA, UK and France and the media reflects fully their decision.

I ran out of mods so posting anon here. BLM is a wonderful response to the racial profiling that occurs because a great many racists chose to go into the policing profession for the wrong reasons. Many do it just for the power rush and in some ways they become effective officers because they thrive on dominance. This is turn is why so many have mental issues later on and lead very troubled home lives.
Indeed racism in policing in general has historically been a great social shortcoming in our society. But it is not just the blacks who are effected deeply and abused by racists in the police forces of North America. In Canada some police are famous for deliberately taking Native Indians out of cities in the middle of winter and dropping them off in the freezing cold in the middle of nowhere. I am sure the same thing has happened in the US. To put it short systematic racism and tribalism is the greatest curse of our world and until we overcome it we have no right to call ourselves advanced as humans. Brings you to wonder why the aliens have avoided all interactive social contact with humans: perhaps it is only because we are biggest bunch of bigoted assholes in their known universe.

Facebook is just providing a category to advertisers here. It doesn't mean at all they will allow hate speech to appear in ads. And if they do, this is another but completely unrelated matter.
TFA goes on and on about how they are outraged because they were able to submit an acceptable ad to be seen by unacceptable people. If it means that "jew haters" shouldn't be able to get ads, by all means, make me a Nazi.
Removing the category also prevent anti hate speech organizations from targeting the people they want to change. I suppose it also prevents advertisers from filtering out "jew haters". Typical bury-your-head-in-the-sand type PR move. Removing the category won't make the people go away.
And if anything, it won't stop advertisers who target these people for bad reasons. They are probably already using correlations to avoid scrutiny. As members of hate groups, they already know all they subtle ways they use to recognize each others.
If you look at the ad-buying screenshot, these categories are under "Education - Field of Study" which leads me to believe these are anthropologists as opposed to hate group members.

Indeed, there wasn't some employee at Facebook that said "hey, let's put these strings into our advertising system! We'll make great $$$!". It's there rudimentary "AI" system that is pulling in information from various places that determined this. It is more of a reflection of society and blame should not be laid out on Facebook. This really is a "shoot the messenger" scenario. As soon as Facebook realized what was happening, they took steps to rectify it. Their "AI" isn't really intelligent, it's just pattern matching, so GIGO.

The National Socialists were authoritarian more than anything. And there have been plenty of authoritarians of every political stripe. OK so a Jew is traveling and wants his search engine to find the nearest synagogue for services. Being able to find every synagogue within 30 miles in a search engine would be a huge aid to race haters. (I am aware that Jews are not a race.)
