Microsoft Begins Rolling Out Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (windows.com)
Microsoft has started to roll out Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, aka, "Redstone 3" to the general public. The company has been testing this new major update to its desktop operating system for over six months. Much like the previous major updates to Windows 10, the Fall Creators Update is also free to Windows 10 users. Some of the remarkable new features the company is shipping with Fall Creators Update include a major design tweak called Fluent Design System. The design changes, CNET writes, are "subtle, like motion and blur effects, along with the changes to the way windows appear." Also in the offering are support for mixed reality, improvements to Photos app, and OneDrive on-demand files -- a feature that many users have long requested. You can read more about these new features and improvements here.
Sounds fair and balanced to me.
Good god, how I dread these things. They always cost me time and hassle.
Fail craters. Because it will crash and burn.
Confucius say, "Find worm in apple - bad. Find half a worm - worse."
I'm not very creative, as you can tell.
I donâ(TM)t like updates or security. This is a pass for me. The GOOG is life.
We all know who's agenda is more important.
Wow, Al Gore's paid moderator trolls sure got to that post quickly. Make no mistake, that post being censored to -1 within moments of being posted is evidence of professional moderator trolls.
To me it sounds like someone who prefers, say, the biennial (2-year) cycle of Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) releases over the semiannual (6-month) cycle of Ubuntu intermediate releases and Windows 10 feature updates.
So much hatred. There's some deeper with this one.
I want to be able to find the damn scroll bars. Either improve the colors, let me choose a classic theme, or otherwise give me some ability of get rid of the flat interface disaster. That is my requested feature.
I've had better success with Windows 10 updates than I've had with Ubuntu or Debian updates. Things got really bad once systemd got involved. Most of the problems I've had after updating Ubuntu and Debian installations have been due to systemd breaking in some way. I'm not scared to update my Windows 10 systems, but I am very uneasy when updating my Linux systems.
The same can be said for posts about the risks of microwave radiation. The hive mind is strong with this web site.
Better a hater than an apologists for terrible decisions in design, business models, and just general anti competitive practices.
Yes, I GLADLY wear the label of 'hater'. Because one makes me an obnoxious a-hole. You're actively hurting everyone with your complacency. You deserve no sympathy.
So now we need even better GPUs just to make sure those stupid effects don't waste even more time.
Anyone know how to disable the stupid "here's all your windows, click on one" effect and return ALT-TAB to the way it has worked for decades?

There was a time when people here would actually discuss the new features of a Windows update. Now it's just massive amounts of butthurt because not everyone wants to run Linux and you can't handle that other people don't want to run your lousy OS.
Fall Creator edition?
What is wrong with 10.1?
Get over yourself. Windows works just fine. Stop proselytizing. Not everyone wants to join your stupid cult.
"motion and blur effects" Please no. We have shared ISDN in our office since Comcast is almost two years late on their promised install, so this is going to make life suck even more. Hopefully it won't be hard to script to disable. We've already invested about two man-weeks in tweaks to Windows to try to make remote desktop less slow.
Microsoft begins rolling back Windows 10 failed creators update
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
You say hatred, we say experience...
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
That should read "Flatulent Design System".
I'd say that's because Microsoft has spent 25 years, 2 kernels, and 10 major releases figuring out how to update something like systemd (that is, scm.exe) without breaking shit every time, while Linux distros are only 7 years into it, getting a lot of pushback and possibly sabotage, and are already a less organized structure to begin with. It will likely take a couple more decades at the minimum before systemd is up to speed with Service Control Manager and patches go as planned.
what if i don't want any of this bullshit?
What if i want an OS that leaves me alone to do my work without being pestered, rebooted, and nagged ?
What if i have zero interest in cortana, skydrive, or any of the other bullshit foisted on me? (see above)
(laptop came with windows 10 home, which .. fuck you MS. Not entirely sure the drivers are actually available for 7, or 8.1 in a pinch. Namely thunderbolt and touchscreen -- and entertaining the notion of spending ~$200 for the pro version to opt out of their nonsense.. again, kindly fuck yourselves MS.)
Product decisions like this are the reason MS will eventually lose the desktop OS market.
Look buddy, you're obviously not a SysAdmin so Linux is a struggle for you. No problem. We all have preferences. I happen to love my CentOS 7 Linux box. You know what? I also love my Windows 10 box. I don't give a fuck who agrees with me or not. Linux for the Server, Windows for the desktop. Mac? Apple has fucked the desktop so fucking bad that's it's bleeding from every orifice.
Then again, I usually don't need to redo my whole settings
Unless you're using mainstream Ubuntu, which changes desktop environment once or twice a decade. It changed from GNOME 2 to Unity in 11.10, leading to widespread sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop. And it's set to change from Unity to GNOME 3 in 17.10.
clean up the system from spyware that miraculously got turned back on
Like the Amazon shopping lens a few years back?
Some of the remarkable new features the company is shipping with Fall Creators Update include a major design tweak called Fluent Design System.
Will this update still have the remarkable feature where it will FUBAR my wireless and ethernet connections and require a roll back to 1607?
Thanks for the warning. It allows me to set aside time in advance of the inevitable machine reimaging I have to do because Microsoft destroys our few Windows 10 machines again.
There was a time when people here would actually discuss the new features of a Windows update.
There was also a time when Windows didn't force their updates on you whether you wanted them or not.
I suspect that your observation and my observation are likely related.
Go to Settings -> Update & security -> Advanced options and turn on Pause Updates.
This will give Microsoft some time to fix those "oopsies" they missed in the first few month after release before they force me to update. Its only giving me a little over a month buffer this time, as opposed to a few months with the Creators Update, but it may save me some grief on my work PC.
Cause after you update your speakers will give Minecraft players that familiar sound of "Sssssssssssssssss..." before a creeper face appears on the screen and the PC goes boom.
Back to you Brian and Steve.
the software will become even less useful as Microsoft hides regularly used features such as Control Panel.
Instead of being able to go directly to what you want you'll have to spend time searching. It's as if the developers have never been to a brick and mortar store in their life. When buying eggs, does one walk around the entire store looking for them, or do you go straight to the refrigerated section?

Controlled Folder Access is a great feature, and long overdue.

Then your workers are retarded. Graphical options are in policy. In settings of mstsc and other clients like freerdp have options for compositing as well

Oooh, can I play too?
This post is a protest against the censorship of posts that are skeptical of spherical earth. Although the posts on this site often are more skeptical than accepting of spherical earth, moderators routinely censor the skeptical posts to -1. Moderators are engaging in a systematic attempt to suppress any skepticism of spherical earth, and it needs to be stopped. Although this post is off-topic, it is civil disobedience to protest the abuse of moderation to systematically censor specific viewpoints. I will continue to post this in order to draw attention to the censorship that is occurring on Slashdot until it stops. It seems clear that this censorship is the work of Aristotle's paid moderator trolls, who are tasked with suppressing any posts that call spherical earth into question. Not even pro-Microsoft posts are censored to the degree that spherical earth skeptics are, which is indicative of the censorship by the moderators. Slashdot is supposed to be a place free of censorship and it is time that the censorship of spherical earth skeptics stops.

I too, would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Sweet... These updates always earn me enough to make a couple of extra boat payments. And not lets forget the lovely Schadenfreude when you tell them "No problem! We'll just restore from your latest backup"
If you really want to incur the wrath of the users of this site, tell everyone you refuse to vaccinate yourself and your family, especially your school aged children. Any antivaxxer comments really pisses people off around here.
Eighteen mentions of Microsoft on the front page and thirteen mentions of Windows.
Go to settings-> updates -> and select update schedule -> defere updates. Select 30 to 90 days. Done!
For the system administrators now create a GPO to do the same and put it on Active Directory so no one else in your organization gets the updates until others find the bugs for you. Call it a day and go home.

Is this the update that uninstalls Windows Media Player, but at least it is available to reinstall if needed?
He was responding to someone who already uses Linux, addressing their comments with a systemd free Unix alternative. What are you even?
Still forced telemetry that logs an incredibly disturbing amount of data? No? Can't ever trust it enough to put it on any sort of hardware. When Microsoft decides to no longer be user-hostile then it'll be worth checking.
Oh, if the privacy settings "can" be turned off - lets have a third party company verify that this is true. Microsoft has proven itself to be untrustworthy.

Just wait until they move 'Control Panel' to the cloud.
I love how Microsoft forces the new update after "testing it for over 6 months", and causes my software to crash. At least now I know why I have problems with Mirillis Action! , I hope they will release the patch soon.
Just finished upgrading to Fall Creators Update.
I use Slackware Linux (-current 64-bit) and Windows 10 in a dual boot setting managed by GRUB. Both OSes are in partitions of a single drive (/dev/sda).
I thought of this setup as highly stable. It started as a dual boot between Slackware and Windows 8.1. It survived upgrades to Windows 10, Anniversary Update and Creators Update without any hassle, so I thought this time would be equally painless. I was wrong.
This Windows upgrade totally b0rked my previous partitioning scheme. Upon the first reboot I got the dreaded message "GRUB error: Unkown filesystem" and a generic GRUB prompt.
I managed to boot manually from GRUB, but Linux still could not recognize its root partition. It turned out that this Windows upgrade somehow changed the partitioning scheme. So, if my root partition previously was, say /dev/sda6, now it was /dev/sda4. But GRUB and the whole system kept looking for root still in /dev/sda6, which now was something else. After realizing what was going on, I was able to restore things to an usable state.
******
Besides the issue with partitions, there is also another problem with Fall Creators Update. The only USB ports provided by my laptop are USB 3.0 ports. All of them. I own a small HP LaserJet 1020 printer connected via USB (it uses USB1). After the upgrade I cannot print anymore. Windows says that the printer is an old USB1 device which cannot take advantage of the features of the newest USB3.0 port. Funny thing is that up to Creators Update I could print to that very own printer, with the same port and cable, without any complaining from the system.
So, be careful when upgrading.

I don't think a single one of the "improvements" listed is of any interest. But one non-listed improvement is highly important: a fix to the bug (or several bugs) in the .NET garbage collector introduced with the spring 2017 release. That bug caused major issues for one program I use (SIL's Fieldworks Language Explorer), and I presume it must affect other programs built with .Net. Despite its being documented back in May, and (I'm told) fixed in Insider Releases in June, Ms has only now gotten around to releasing it to The Rest Of Us.
Everything else, with the possible exception of the "Anti-ransomware protection", is lipstick, IMHO.
