  1. Re:Misleading summary on Royal Society and Creationism In Science Classes · · Score: 1

I'd mod you higher if you weren't already 5. I was thinking about this just yesterday and think that this is the most sensible thing to do. I've seen kids ask teachers about Genesis, and if the teacher doesn't handle it well those kids will quit listening and just sit there and steam and complain to their parents. If this is ignored then it's like saying that people's religious beliefs aren't even worth addressing. That not only feels like a slap in the face, it is a slap in the face. Teachers having preparation for the questions of the students and their parents will smooth teaching evolutionary concepts and in the end will educate people better. Also, teachers may have their own internal conflicts because of their own religious beliefs and upbringing. The much of the same preparation would also help them in this regard.

The "where to stop" is somewhere between "beyond a reasonable doubt" and "beyond a shadow of a doubt". While I firmly believe in the auditability of things like this even when the device seems to be on the up and up, from my reading of the material this device has produced some verifiable and unexplained funky results on occasion. If forensic pathologist were to testify that the only explanation for a particular injury was getting stabbed with a titanium spork, but the defense could find a case where a very similar injury was caused before the invention of the titanium spork, then further information about how the pathologist reached this conclusion would likely become much more important to the case. In the case of DUI and other traffic enforcement this kind of accountability is needed because more and more city and county revenue is coming from the fines imposed for these offenses.

I would have thought that the court(s) would rule that the prosecution had to provide the court (and the defense) with the source code (and schematics, device testing procedures, ...) in order to use the results of the test as evidence. It seems to me that the provider of the Intoxilyzer 8000 should be answering to the prosecution and police. The police could then take up with the Intoxilyzer 8000 people their issues with the uselessness of the device if this info weren't provided. I'm stupid, though, so I could have it all wrong.

They said that it used some wrote once ROM, so I'm thinking that they are thinking that since no one could take one of their chips and over write it with the data of another chip completely (b/c of the write once ROM) that it can't be cloned. If this is true then it's totally clone-able since no one ever said that the clone had to even fit into anything resembling the original. I don't know a lot about RFID, so I'm speculating a lot.

In addition to the no disassembly rule, 3 days seems pretty short for this kind of operation. It probably could be done, but it'd have to be the contestant's top priority and even still it seems short. Another thing is that one of the data recovery firms that they contacted did agree to give it a try, but it sounded like they didn't know that it was a competition and Mr Contest-Holder took their lack of optimism as "we can't do it". Also, $40 bucks is at least 100 times too low to pay someone for any advanced data recovery.

Also going from kill mode to dinner with the family within such a short amount of time and knowing that you're doing it again the next day is probably very new.
