Uh, those of us that built those systems.

The number shown on the front of darn near 99% of those boxes was set by seating/reseating a few jumpers. It never really did anything on most mobos, not even being connected in most cases, but it sure made the rest of the world see a "difference" in speed by toggling the higher number to display.

Reminds me of a band I know. They have an elderly regular that ALWAYS asks them to "turn it down" after the first set. They just pretend to move the knobs, and the poor schlub never knows the difference...

At the end of the day, DARPA specialises in technology that is designed to benefit the military, and as a result, is frequently designed for either either killing people, or making it easier to do so. Yes, there's the whole "defence" argument; that the technology will be used for saving lives. But this is a half-truth, the lives being saved are almost always select (only lives belonging to a certain state(s) (the US and potentially its allies in this case)), and often at the cost of other lives.

With all due respect, that's the downside to having a military. That's their job, like it or not. Patton said it best:

You don't win a war by dying for your country. You win a war by making the other son-of-a-bitch die for his.

Let's go for the ever-popular car analogy!

You sell me a new car. About 6 months after it's sold, I notice my top speed drops to 80kph if I drive more than 100km in a day. I ask you for details, and you tell me that you made the mistake of selling cars below the logical margins to get the sales in. You want to save on YOUR warranty costs, so you're reducing the "wear and tear" on the vehicle you sold me.

You're telling me that I'm being self-centered by asking to get what I paid for. That, sir/ma'am, is nothing more than being a smart customer. If I sued them for 54 million dollars for their "oversight", then sure, I'd be a self-centered, money-grubbing weenie.

T'ain't the case here. I'm just insisting they make sure they can back the services they advertise.
