  2. Diffrence between this and 'normal' study groups. on Student Faces Expulsion for Facebook Study Group · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think the difference to a normal group is that an informal discussion in a group is more the ideas behind the topics, you can't just 'copy & paste' other peoples words. Depending of the set up of the group, lazy students could not be members, but plagiarise other students work. Couple that with the fact there are 146 members, which is much larger then any 'real' group might be, and I can see why they might have a problem. Having said that, expulsion & other measures seem overkill, a review of policy and discussion with students would make much more sense.

I've have heard a lot about lack of game support etc, which I would have thought would discourage many would-be-pirates, Not to mention you seem to need fairly new hardware which may limit some. Is there actually going to be a large number of people who want to pirate it?

Disney hasn't been capitalist (in the sense of participating in a free market economy) since they bought the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act in 1998, and probably weren't before then.
It was well before that I believe. Due to their power/influence/money, every time their cash-creating Mouse has been about to leave copyright, the terms and length of copyright get extended. In the past 40 years this has happened about 11 different times. It's said if the same laws were applied retrospectively, the US government wouldn't have been allowed to use the name and image of Uncle Sam.

As other people have said in this thread, there are numerous lawsuits about them stealing ideas, and most of their early work is based on public domain fairy tales. Other then "Our company would die if we didn't have exclusive rights to re-release all our old films in loads of different formats and old toys in many ways" I can't personally see any reason why their copyright should be kept.

Don't know how well this could work, but you could try spoofing an e-mail or faking a phone call or letter from a Anti-Piracy Organisation or just from Microsoft themselves. Give them the impression that someone official will be conducting a 'regular' random check on their software licences, and the installing question will probably go away.

Of course another insane idea might be to install the software but add a virus to the mix. Then when it deletes and messes up everything, blame the pirated software. I'd guess that'd change company policy....

Of course, making your (and the laws) position known, is a far better plan. If your boss asked you to kill someone, or take drugs or whatever your wouldn't, this shouldn't be any different.

Other then the reason someone mentioned above, of 'buying votes' there is also case for bias. I'm not sure how much it would effect general workplaces, the rate of apathy in this country means I don't think that many people would care, but certain career paths, and voters for certain strong view parties might have problems.
I don't recall all the details, but there was a case a while back of parents complaining about a teacher because he was fund-raising for the BNP. Similarly police officers would face scrutiny, and there would be loads of problems if they were found to have a strong BNP side. Whist open voting does allow for less chance to fake voting, it also takes away a key part of democracy; that of allowing to vote for who you want with no repercussions.

Its not just pathetic, its utterly embarrassing. If you're regulating something it would be nice if you have some idea of what that thing is. Saying stuff like:
"I just the other day got... an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially."
does not exactly inspire confidence that he knows what he's regulating.

However I think he's far less unusual then you suggest. You might be right that most people have heard of the internet, but I'd guess loads don't really know what it actually is or how it would work. Try asking a couple of non-geeky people you know to explain how they think the internet works. My Mother who has been using e-mail and the web for quite some time, still doens't really understand the difference between the internet, Google and the browser. She didn't even realise there was a difference for many years. When I tried to introduce her to firefox she thought it was a different 'internet' because I didn't have google as the homepage (which is when I tried to explain google is a website, not the web. She didn't get it). Just because people have heard of or use the internet doesn't mean they actually know what it is, how it works, or anything other then how they access it.

That's pretty much the ultimate measure, brand recognition by people almost totally unknowledgeable about the field the brand is in. When people who don't really understand the idea of the web or internet but know they need to 'Google' something, you know your name can hardly get any bigger.

In the same way that Mp3's is the only music format, iPod the only music player, MySpace the only social networking site and Photoshop the only image editor; YouTube is the only video site. It'll take a long while or something very big to change that. (If it does at all, can't think of many brands that broke that barrier and haven't stayed top in their field.)
