  7. Android will win on the tablet on Microsoft's Approach To Battling the iPad In the Workplace · · Score: 1

It may not be the best OS of the bunch, but the fact of the matter is that it will run on a whole host of hardware. Apple and RIM have lost in this respect, because there will be very little choice. Microsoft seems to be in bed with HP. WebOS and Android will take the market because soon enough someone will be running it on a toaster.

  8. Not even Houdini.... on Open Source More Expensive Says MS Report · · Score: 1

The real trick to software uptake is usability. If you can take a complex solution and make it a breeze to use you've got a win. The problem with a lot of the free software out there is the focus on "making it work" instead of "making it pretty"

If you have an application that takes a bit of configuration to get it right, grandma would rather press some buttons and fill in some text areas. Hiding options in config files or cli switches is not the way to go. Unfortunately, theres plenty of software out there that chooses this route

Companies are going to rush to get their tablets out with Honeycomb, and the hardware might vary as they compete with one another.

Look at the market right now. You've got tablets as cheap as $100 with shitty hardware. There's the middle ground with hardware that works and at the high-end you have the ipad and galaxy tab. I'd wait until even the commodity hardware is enough to make a decent tablet

  22. A bit close-minded around here on Playstation 3 Code Signing Cracked For Good · · Score: 4, Insightful

The PS3 was being attacked well before OtherOS removal. When linux was available the graphics on the machine were limited to virtualization. The race was on too crack the 7 locked down SPUs. Were people successful? Mostly no, but that doesnt mean attempts havent been made. If i remember correctly, Geohot's intention was to gain access to the cores. They just happened to find an exploit to give them keys to the kingdom

Removing linux definitely brought the talent out of the woodwork, but it did not start a war

  23. I dont get it.... on Chinese Written Language To Dominate Internet · · Score: 1

and apparently the author of the summary doesnt either.

The people of China do not speak "Chinese." Depending on the region they speak either Cantonese or Mandarin in varied regional dialects. While they do not differ all that much, they are still unintelligible when compared to each other in spoken form. Apart from being spoken differently, they are written differently aswell

Standard written Chinese is Mandarin, and spoken word for word as Cantonese it sounds unnatural because its expressions are ungrammatical and unidiomatic in Cantonese. As a result, modern Cantonese speakers have developed their own written script, sometimes creating new characters for words that either do not exist or have been lost in standard Chinese.

Saying Chinese will become a new standard language is like saying "North American" is spoken around the world.

  24. Enter Tekken 6.... on Split Screen Co-op Is Dying · · Score: 1
ok, so i understand why many FPS and sports games are better played online , but this one just boggles my mind

Tekken has a button-mashing platform sort of campaign mode that can be played single or multiplayer. The thing that I cant wrap my head around is why multiplayer can only be played using a net connection
    • By nature of the platform, your characters are never more than a screen apart
    • teamwork is essential or you fail against the horde. Lag kills this
    • character choice is limited to the pair you choose, so its nice to negotiate in person

My guess is that this is a case of "lets do it like those guys" that tested and failed imo
