I would rather live in the big city and deal with my 25 minute commute then live out in the boonies and have to drive an hour to pick up groceries, go to the movies, shop, go to the hospital/doctor/dentist, take my car to the mechanic, or use the airport. 2. FYI, park rangers have their own set of problems. Weather (rain, snow ,sleet, hail, etc.) being one of the least worrisome. Park rangers are often called in for drug busts and raids. Park rangers also have the unenviable task of dealing with some of the world's ilk such as poachers.

Yes, sorry. I did mean to include the word 'not'. STDs should not be a factor.

I am not a doctor nor am I female, so the only contraceptive I am completely familiar with is the condom. I don't know the health risks and other factors for IUDs, the pill, whatever thing they put in your arm (I knew one lady who used it roughly 10 years ago, but she had complications), or any other prevention method. I would assume that the pill or similar contraceptive would not pose any other health risks while in space.

While the EU and Russia might be more casual with sex due to being LONG past the neo-con stage, there are still problems with having sex while in space. Pregnancy, for example, could prove disastrous on a 17 month trip to and from Mars. STDs should be a factor due to the extensive health screenings one has to go through before being permitted to be an astronaut/cosmonaut.

Other concerns with having sex while in space, especially for 17 months, would be the amount of oxygen used due to increased physical exertion, bodily fluids (scientists have found that people tend to perspire more in microgravity), and space/motion sickness. All of this assuming the physics of it is not an issue.

From the article: "In short, these new features will generally make it much easier for computer novices to do the work they need to do. But Microsoft has made it harder for power users - the group of readers most likely to read this article - to do the more complex work that they need to do."

This is the issue with Windows Vista. Microsoft has listened to 'the people' and decided that was best for their shiny new OS was to make it easier for the simpletons, NOT the power users. This is one of the reasons Microsoft has had such a huge market share forever. They cater to those that don't know better. How many times have you been on /. and read "use *nix or a mac"? Its in every thread. Power users know enough and are confident enough to have that option.

When I talk with my grandmother, she doesn't want to know about security and rights, she wants Windows to automatically log her on when she turns on the computer. She wants things to look pretty, not all gray and ugly. She is the kind to request 3-d, graphics intensive applications that hog memory just to show her a pretty calendar.

How many simpletons are there compared to the power users? Obviously enough that Microsoft would prefer to do things their way rather then the /. way.

I have been using the same arguments about webmail to my network admin. Questions that receive no answers:
Why is webmail blocked but USB ports allow anyone to plug and play a thumb drive? Couldn't someone bring a virus in the same way?
Why do we block webmail but no other websites/services are blocked? Shouldn't we worry about someone surfing for pr0n or possibly looking for warez?

Often, I have heard the argument that IT doesn't want to let information get leaked via webmail and IM's. But all computers at my location have a CD-RW, plus 8 USB ports, a printer at each desk, etc. I would think its easier to track a file getting sent via webmail then it is to track a user who prints the document and walks out the front door.

  13. Re:Just don't bother... on Vista Can Run Without Activation for a Year · · Score: 3, Interesting

What I find to be horribly ironic is that Vista is everything that many users ASKED for. They wanted shiny graphics. They wanted a calendar on the desktop; they wanted to see search capability on the Start menu. IE7 was something IE users requested. Task switching (displaying folders like a Rolodex). My Computer is now simply named Computer to help lessen the confusion. Something called a Breadcrumb Bar. The list goes on.

Now, before everyone starts bashing me, please note I did not say ALL users asked for this. Nor did I say ANY /. users wanted any part of this. In fact, any techno-literate person would prefer not to have the added processes that Vista has running all the time. Personally, I don't see much point in going to Vista because I don't want a calendar on the desktop, I don't want to sacrifice my collection of games for the few that MS has added only for Vista. I prefer few processes running in the background to optimize my system for what I want running, not what MS believes I should have running.

Unfortunately for those in an office setting, many will be forced to go to Vista when OEM dealers stop offering XP as an option. I know my office will be looking at Vista within a year because we are too lazy to buy XP licenses and reinstall Windows XP after wiping the HDD of Vista.

I don't know any business that uses POP for email, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. And I do agree with your statement regarding my sysadmin. She needs a new job. But that's not my decision to make, unfortunately! I like using OWA on occasion. Trying to use Outlook Web Access's slightly limited features while working on a PDA does not sound appealing, although as you pointed out it is an option. I would much rather use a BlackBerry for email and attachments. I don't need music while working, so having an ipod/cell phone/PDA seems pointless to me anyways. Especially for the $$ they plan on charging initially.

I always hear so many techies bashing Microsoft. Unfortunately what most of those people don't understand is, Microsoft is actually giving the majority of people what the people have asked for. Every individual I know who does not have a career or a degree in a computer field has installed spyware such as WeatherBug, Living Waterfalls, WebShots, plus software that displays calendars on the desktop, software to automatically backup your computer, etc. I don't know 1 in 10 (non technical) users who know how to browse folders without doing it in a 3rd party program like MS Word. I don't know any technical users who would dream of searching for a file in MS Word unless the file they wanted to open was a .doc, .dot, .rtf, or possibly a .txt. So Microsoft listens to what the majority of the people SAY they want and then they give it back to the people. And the minority complains about it and says use something like *nix, anything Mac or the like. How is the common user going to understand *nix if they can't even understand the basics in Windows? Don't try to pass advanced physics to the masses if they don't understand basic addition and subtraction.

Your rights stop when they infringe upon the rights of others.

For example, I have the right to shoot my guns in any direction I wish. When the bullet from my gun impacts your body, I have infringed upon your right to life by killing you. Therefore there are laws stating when and where I may shoot my gun.

If I swing my arms wildly while clenching my hands into fists, and then my fist happens to make contact with your nose, I once again have infringed your rights.

You may yell "fire" in a room. It may even be a crowded room. But only under certain circumstances is this considered acceptable. You might be participating in a theater production and one of your lines is "fire" for example.

But yelling "fire" in a crowded room causing panic and harm to others is not something permissible.
