    The first thing that came to mind(no pun intended) was that if a memory resides in a certain cerebral location, and all one would have to do to locate it is elicit that memory in a person, while scanning them, then one can conclude that once this has occurred, one could then go in and physically REMOVE the memory by destroying that particular location in the brain.

    Maybe that was what Obi Wan was doing. He simply used telekinesis to destroy specific brain cells while rewriting in another location with verbal suggestion......"These are not the 'droids you are looking for......".

    The "smaller" ISPs cannot afford to fuck their customers over. Comcast feels they have a secure enough monopoly in the market that they feel safe enough to extort, swindle, cheat and basically do what they want to their customers. It is the "got you by the balls" mentality. Basically, if you want decent service, but maybe willing to settle for a lesser product, you pretty much have to avoid the top dog. Holds true for most services, these days.

    And, yeah, I am a subscriber of both Comcast and Verizon. That will be changing real soon though. I'm finally fed up.

    Is an administration that has some intestinal fortitude, that will NOT sell out to private interests, and start making demands to curb such behavior in order to be a part of our economy, a partner.

    It is as simple as saying "Look. We do not appreciate your pollutants effecting us in the manner they currently are, and as such, we will curtail our trade with you until something is done.".

    It is our right to do so. The only thing that stops us is corruption and spinelessness. Both curable maladies.

    At one time it may have been the DOMINATE influence, but I like to think that in this day and age, society and KNOWLEDGE have a greater effect then they used to.

    After all, it is our level of intelligence (and more importantly, the ability to act upon it), that has raised us to a higher realm of existence (debatable, I know).

    Seriously. We all complain about the bullshit that surrounds us on a daily basis here at /. yet we see posts like the 1st one up. I am hoping he was being funny/sarcastic (as he was properly modded).

    Try being the good guy, write them an HONEST email explaining your concerns, and ask them for a reasonable offer. You will always retain the right to reject (unless you foolishly give it away). So, what have you got to lose by being honest about things up front? IF, and I emphasize, IF, it ends up in a courtroom, you will have already scored some points in that you will be able to prove a good-faith effort to remedy the situation.

    While I can agree with the "talk to a lawyer" suggestions, to some extent, I do feel that lawyers are sometimes wholly unnecessary and are merely a moneypit. Send the email, get a response, and then decide whether or not a lawyer is called for. And don't forget your gut. It talks to you. Listen.

    Hate to kick the barstool out from under y'all, but Jeebuz, you folks act like a gene sequence removes all thought from the equation.

    I don't sleep around because I love my wife and extra-marital affairs have a tendency to remove MARRIAGES. Quite frankly, it is my head, and the thoughts within, that decide my actions, not the genes passed on to me. Genes may have some effect, but if the result is not acceptable to the thinking part of me, they are simply over-ridden.

    That I HAVE to use IE7/WMP10 to view Netflix Online Instant View content, I am assuming it is simply because of DRM that was imbedded in IE8 to serve said DRM to people that refuse to let the DRM that is Vista on their machines. My guess is that the bloat is just the DRM.

    Microsoft wants that DRM on everyones machines at all costs. Vista failed to do it, so now they are trying with their browser, something that most XP users will upgrade to.

    I for one, ONLY use IE7(combined with WMP10) to watch Netflix, nothing more. But even in that sense, they got me by the balls. If I do not cave, no Instant View Netflix for me. When they make me switch to IE8 in order to view, my Netflix viewing will cease.

    Hear me, Netflix?

    I think it was marketers.

    Same people that convinced men and women alike that large breasts are attractive. Personally, not turned on by stretch marks or surgery scars. Not to mention the fact that there is more then likely a bra involved, and you ALL know how hard it is for geeks to get around those.

    Is it just my mind making this up, or did I once see a "Enzyte Natural BREAST enhancement for Women" ad?

    Amen, Brother/Sister.

    With the sometimes horrid quality of products sold, it is almost impossible for the average consumer to validate the authenticity of any given product.

    If I need to be concerned that if I purchase a product, then resell it at some point in the future, that I may be held liable for that, criminally AND civilly, simply because I cannot not tell whether or not I bought an original/authorized version, then I am NOT going to purchase the product at all.

    This is simply telling me that the simple act of purchasing a product may result in personal liability.

    If I rotate a book 90 degrees either direction, and turn the pages, I am pretty much doing the same thing.

    It is a very specific amount of movement (one page), regardless of how far I have the book from my face (zoom), and I can go either direction, up, or down.

    So, they basically got a patent for doing what people have been doing with books for most of recorded history.

    They obviously disallow common sense when it comes to patent applications. I guess someone patented it already.

    Yeah, pretty much what you said.

    Has nothing to do with the trust I have for my WIFE.

    It was a matter of limiting access to nobody but myself, in essence, to ensure that ANY charge, that I myself did not authorize, is suspect.

    No better way to separate the wheat from the chaff.

    It also has the advantage of PROTECTING my wife. If one of our accounts is compromised, We still have access to safe accounts. Simply a matter of not putting all our eggs in one basket.

    I was kind of thinking of doing this myself.

    Finding out which contact(s) in the port are for data transfer, and wire in an INTERNAL (as in, have to take the fucking thing apart) switch to manually sever the data circuit(s). While I was at it, I was wondering if I could also hardwire a switch for the camera lense in case my phone ever becomes compromised (without my knowledge), it couldn't be used for visual snooping.

    Then I realized that my tinfoil hat would probably interfere with the transmission of such snooping anyways, and dropped the idea altogether.

    I've also considered taking my phone to the lake and teaching it how to fly (see my post about Verizon).

    When I closed the bank account, I told them "Moving out of the country and don't ever expect to be back here.". Although it was totally untrue, it meant, to them, that they were never going to hear from me again, and that it was in THEIR best interest to not give anyone money on my behalf.

    And, to previous post, yes, of course I have taken precautions for emergencies. That includes making sure I don't have companies like Verizon fucking with my finances and leaving my wife a mess to deal with.

    I had to CLOSE a bank account to keep Verizon out of it. They first drew more then I owed them from it, then after I told them I wanted paper bills that I would pay myself(they also tried to charge me for the bills), and to not auto-pay anymore, they promptly attempted to draw the same amount, found they had no access to it and charged me an insufficient funds charge. I believe that was entirely intentional.

    That was enough for me. Nobody has access to any of my accounts but myself. Not even my wife. That way when I have a charge to my account, I can ask to see my signature on something specifically authorizing it. No signature? Not my problem.

    The hassle of dealing with idiots like that FAR outweighs the convenience of auto-pay.

    CAPTCHAs were designed to delineate between machine and human, then preclude the machine segment.

    Solution? Use humans.

    This never occurred to the designers of CAPTCHAs?

    Ridiculous for anyone to assume that the time involved was not worth doing it manually, in bulk processing. To assume their time has the same monetary value as that of the rest of the world is pretty narrow-minded, and somewhat arrogant, in my opinion.

    That is precisely the sort of crap they spooned out when Verichip tried to persuade parents it was a good idea to have their kids RFID chipped ("If your kid is lost or kidnapped, they can be located!").

    And that, my friends, was just the first salvo in the attempt to get people-chipping popularly accepted.

    As I once said, the day they start chipping people is the day I start offering my services to remove them and feed them to the migrating geese that pass through our area, in little balls of bread dough.
