I used to think it was a gimmick, etc etc. One day a friend lent me a PSP, had it for a week, didn't like it much. I was kinda big, low battery life.. dunno.. something didn't quite feel right..

Then a few months ago, I met some guys that organized nintendo-themed meetings. They lent me a DS, and I tried a few games for a few minutes.. and I was in love.

Now I got my own DS Lite, and man, those are the best 200 bucks I've spent (yes it's that expensive here, sadly).

Not only read directly from memory, but instead of adding a 'hard drive' why not just add support for USB mass storage devices?? then you can choose what to use: USB keys, card adapters (maybe you got some memorysticks/CF/whatever cards lying around.. I have a 1G MMC that's not compatible with the Wii's sd card driver., and of course you can attach a hard drive with a USB enclosure to it, so it's obviously better than limiting yourself to just a hard drive attachment.

From there, it'd be quite simple to add usb keyboard support for use with opera, or usb/mouse for FPSs (if you feel so inclined, and the developers see it worth supporting as an alternative.. I wouldn't mind :)).

There's a big difference however, between offering an *alternative* innovative controller to an existing console, and launching a new generation of consoles with such controller as a default.

Alternative controllers often end up having only a few games for them, as game companies know they'll be addressing a fraction of the customer base if they do games for that controller.
If the controller is the default on the system, all users of that system have it, so it's not risky to produce games for it.

I guess it boils down to the intent of the law: was it made to ban kiddie porn because it's atrocious, disgusting, etc (ie it's being banned on morality grounds, like we could ban, say, violent video games.. whatever we call it it's censorship), or to protect kids, because (for now) they're being used for the pics, and they're being molested for real?

If it's the first one, how is that any different from banning bondage pics, for example? or s/m or zoophilic pics that one might consider 'extremely perverted'? where is the line drawn and why?

If it's the second one.. then one should agree that 100% artificial 3d-rendered kiddie porn pics should be legal...

There's NO way in hell it's gonna lower prices. It's actually going to raise prices. These things cost money. Maybe each one isn't all that expensive, but global deployment, adapt current processes to include this, prepare stores to handle it, it might really end up costing up almost as much as they claim to be losing, and even if it doesn't, it's a perfect excuse to raise prices (you think they would mind a little extra pocket change?).

Other thing that may happen is that they offer this as an option to stores (and they cost the same or just a little bit more, but then they sell/rent the de-activation equipment to the store to be able to use them and make the money there... who do you think will end up paying for the costs anyway?)

Same thing used to happen here in Argentina (in some parts it still does), and that is IMO a even more of a reason to foster technological development in the country. The more you depend on imports for hi-tech tools which are more and more important each day, the harder it'd be for the local economy and general welfare to improve in a global capitalist society. Electronics produced in India (or in Argentina) may currently suck, but unless we push to help the local industry develop in that area, it will keep sucking.

Having kids get cheap PCs is great, but not nearly as much as having them produced in your own country, where many kids will benefit from the laptops, and many many other will benefit from their parent's jobs required to build them , etc.

Now, about the confidence in government.. well, that's a constant in 3rd world countries.. don't think for a second that I doubt my country's government is any different. However, one can't just say "they're all thieves and that's that". Sometimes (maybe in cases like this one) their interests run parallel to those of the people (win-win), and that can be encouraged, aside from obviously trying to actually do something, anything you can, no matter how little it is, to improve the situation.

Some of my friends ran off to europe or the us during the 2001 crisis to get better jobs, or to 'save' themselves. I've been offered jobs in europe and the us, but I didn't want to take them, because I didn't want to live better in another country, I want to be able to live better in THIS one.

"Made in Japan" didn't mean much for quality right after WW2 either, you know. Look at them now. That doesn't mean India is going to pull it off, but sure as hell they should try, and that would be FAR more helpful for poor indian kids and their families than the laptops themselves.
