Let me tell you how it is on the A'dam airport. No matter how much security you have there is a moment when after check-in the travelers go through the passport/screening control. In order to make it "safer" passengers from 20-30 check in lines go through the same passport control.
So, you walk through the airport's door [completely unguarded] and within 20 paces you are in the middle of THOUSANDS of people waiting for the passport control. If you are quick it would take about 3-5 seconds to rush in and detonate yourself...even if there were fully armed guards you can do it....so you need a control point before the control point before the control point...
That is why someone above was joking about "it's queues all the way down". Complete security is an impossibility, therefore no amount of money spent and restrictions placed will help you. Never. There will always be gatherings of people that cannot be secured [school, disco, cafes, church, hospital, company building, sport events...the list is endless]....we cannot give up all those activities and we cannot make them 100% secure.
8hrs per day [if you are lucky] work 1 hr lunch + 2 small breaks [at work] 3 hrs commute [this can be shorter, I admit, but not all are lucky] 8hrs sleep 1 hr preparing food free time for anything else - 3hrs in total [for you, wife, kids, friends, everyone and everything else]
So, this is it - working and basic necessities leaves 3hrs per day during the working week. Those who are lucky with the commute might not be so lucky with the 40 hrs.
I still get incredulous stares from [scientists no less!] when someone says "work is work, life is life, I have a life" to which I always reply "do you realize that you spend more time with me than with your children?"

What is the root of such behavior? I have only one data point to share - a conversation with retired middle class Republican gentleman in a plain flying to the US. So, this is it - working and basic necessities leaves 3hrs per day during the working week. Those who are lucky with the commute might not be so lucky with the 40 hrs.
I still get incredulous stares from [scientists no less!] when someone says "work is work, life is life, I have a life" to which I always reply "do you realize that you spend more time with me than with your children?"
And it is such an easy calculation to make...even if you include the weekends THE PURE TIME you spend for everything in this life is less than the PURE TIME you spend on work. Disgusting....

What is the root of such behavior? I have only one data point to share - a conversation with retired middle class Republican gentleman in a plain flying to the US. I was telling him about all those "controversial" liberties the Dutch enjoy and he asked me "then why did you go living there?" "Because I wanted to have those liberties in case I needed them [personally I meant the euthanasia and the coffee shops; hopefully I won't have to use the services of the ladies of negotiable affection for a while longer]" .
He looked rather surprised by that answer and said "this can never happen in US". "Why?" "Because we are large country with diverse population so someone will always be against those liberties". "So, what IS the problem - in NL not everyone agrees with those either?"
At the end it was clear that he could not accept the idea of choice [! weird form a member of allegedly the freest society in the world]. Having a possibility of abortion does not mean YOU have to do it - I tried again and again but no...the man would not accept the possibility that other people would do something that he considers wrong. So better ban the whole thing. Period.
BTW, at the very end he said [it's true, I swear] "Never come to the US, you are too liberal for it. Go to Canada." I replied "Thanks, I had come to the same conclusion already".
