It seems like a large portion of science articles posted on slashdot regard studies qualifying what I thought to be common knowledge or even common sense. Isn't the defining trait of a conservative supposedly adherence to traditional practices and values? And aren't liberals neccesarily open to new ideas and the incorporation of progressive thinking? Conservatives are more likely to be older, because as one slashdotter said - you have to have experience to know how important having experience is. Liberals should tend to undervalue traditional practices, seeing them as outdated. Conservatives should tend to overvalue traditional practices, seeing them as reliable.

I was thinking about this a couple days ago, since i've moved far away from my xbox 360 owning friends. I disagree about the negatives of adding a limit of how far the players can stray from one another (strictly for online co-op). Many single screen multiplayer (on same console) games imploy this without much intereference to gameplay (though some do make it a pain in the @$$). And as far as I can recall playing Halo 1 & 2 coop, I'd almost always remain between the same 2 checkpoints and never 1 mile away. Granted I don't know if staying between the same checkpoints would generally avoid lag on cable modems, but if it does, I can't see the harm.

Obviously, the study lacks a specific practical application of this knowledge. I suppose we will see the results of a new study linking IQ to contructive early childhood stimuli (gee whoda thunkit?). Even more interesting would be if that link does not exist...thus relieving parents of their supposed duty of doing things other than TV and video games with their kids.

In any case, science will always explore questions that remain unproven (and often ones that have been). Surely you cannot say there is no doubt to the existence of solely 3 dimensions? 11. Now and Later on How Exclusive Will Exclusive Games Be? · · Score: 1

This generation games that come out for XBox360 or PS3 and sell, will probably make it to the other system. However, wii games, even aside from 1st party nintendo ones, will be more likely exclusive to wii. We are already seeing different versions of new releases for the wii, and they are becoming more divergent from the xbox360 and ps3 versions (call of duty 3 to godfather). Assuming wii maintains it's marvelous popularity, all but the most popular wii games built from the ground up will have little reason to undergo the major graphics upgrades and control changes neccessary for porting. If you took Wii out of the equation...or guessed at the next generation of consoles, I'd agree most big games would port to every console. But combine the low cost (comparatively) of developing Wii games with it's projected console sales (huge), and there is a big reason to think this system will see many true exclusives.

With the nintendo Wii and DS, I'm extremely impressed with their creativity and direction. I could list dozens of games like trauma center and brain age, but I don't have to because they ARE POPULAR. People want games that are new and inventive rather than rehashed sequels. Yes, quality franchises exist where gamers can buy sequels without worrying that FFXII is broken, rushed and glitchy. Those games have EARNED their top-selling status, and when they disappoint, like Sonic, then they lose that status. Yet, those franchises are being created all the time, and the first games in the series sell like mad. Not having an attention span capable of handling a learning curve or even reading an instruction manual is what really defines a Softcore gamer. Reading reviews to make educated purchases and investing time where you are rewarded with deep, challenging game mechanics is a waste of time to Softcore gamers. Look at Deal or No Deal, it's the epitome of a softcore game. Any hardcore gamer would find Deal or No Deal shallow, repetitive and lacking any skill or challenge. However, that makes it so appealing to a Softcore gamer because there's no downtime getting stuck or frustrated with some sort of clever puzzling. It's 100% entertainment! Of course some good games can be enjoyed by both hardcore and softcore gamers, like Tetris, Wii Sports, and even many Mario games. Therefore you'll continue seeing more of these games - easy learning curve AND deep game mechanics. However, in SF Bay, you say most days are 0% or 80-100%. Aren't these really the only days of practical interest? Does it really matter how accurate a 50% prediction is, if it is 37% or 58%? If the yes rain vs. no raingroups are so well stocked (150+ days say), then that makes things all the easier. Although one interesting and simple calculation would be overall accuracy, by multiplying the sum of percents in a year (say 32%) by 365 and subtracting the number of days it rained during the year (easy to find). And if you were really crazy you could look at how accuracy for no rain vs. rain improves (supposedly) as the predictions go from 10 days out, to 9 days, to 8 days, etc.
