(the one with the cheezy, "I'm a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown" -- oh crap, why do I remember that? Fucking virus.) was totally commercial.
Are you talking about Mariah Carey?:-) If so (Well Hell...If not) Damned that was hard to watch day after day in the news. Now my example of being fed a story about a poor helpless artist on the decline is Whitney Houston. You KNOW the same people watching/engineering the fall right now are the ones who will be ready, willing and able (and financially able) to bring her back into the spotlight (Fold) again.
Go to your local bars at about 9pm-11pm (and today is Friday -- Friday is great for this) and see some bands...They're almost always better than radio stuff.
This is an excellent point. Literally...go find what you like, listen to it and eventually buy it to support the Artist.
I tend to just concentrate on one genre (metal) but even I sometimes get distracted...
Well first of all...Viva La Metal but second is a point on Genre. All that is out there (Jazz, Classical, Metal, Friggin' Polka for that matter) is NEW and GOOD to someone! Go Find It!!

Why I.T. Matters

· Score: 3, Insightful
Our earlier story summarizes the original claim: that there's little to be gained by staying at the forefront of technology.
This really is the crux of the matter.
Technology/I.T. Matters. Always has and will always be that way, but where do you want to be placed on what could be called a Yardstick of inovation/money expended to stay at the "Tip of the Spear" ?
Only read this comment for humor (well relevance if you agree with me of course)...no Modding down for RUSH references:-) But this really made me think of the lyrics to "A Farewell to Kings"
When they turn the pages of history/
When these days have passed long ago/
Will they read of us with sadness/
For the seeds that we let grow?/
We turned our gaze/
From the castles in the distance/
Eyes cast down/
On the path of least resistance/
Fantastic summary...guess you are not new here eh?:-) I seriously hope you do not get modded down (if you even care) for your post as I tried a similar tactic a couple of weeks back and did...silly.
Really you do bring up a very good point that instead of stopping and thinking about every topic that is posted on Slashdot (or elsewhere really) all everyone does is think about their own pre-conceived notions or comforts and spews them at the keyboard. It can get very repititious and as you have pointed out, predictable.
I knew that it could feel good to use computers, and I wanted to recapture that sense of empowerment and put humans back in control of the machines.
While I applaud anyone who is willing to attempt to predict "30 years in computing" and like everyone, can not say he or she is wrong (after all, it has not happened) I have to say that this is a useless article from Mr. Nielsen. In the same couple of paragraphs that he is talking about his dislike of the mainframe and his pleaant experience with the desktop machine, he tells us his *feelings* on why the computer has to feel "good" to use. Not only is this a non-empirical argument but it is Circular/pretzel logic as well.
...Microwave. ...dinosaurs were incinerated within hours by the 'heat pulse'... All unprotected creatures were 'baked by the equivalent of a global oven set on broil...
Well...Kinda hard to "broil" per se but Bon Appetit!
They sent subscribers a customized cover of the magazine...The sample targeted advertisements are for non-profit organizations...
What bothers me the most about this is not the notion of loss of privacy, it is loss of *Choice*. When I worked as the only IT Staff at a non-profit (coincedance noted) I wanted all the information I could get, in whatever format to try to make the best and (unfortunately) least-expensive solutions.
This is just the biggest "brand" or brand name, being shoved down our throats.
Civ-style simulation computer game to teach history to high school and college students...But with the right tools, this can significantly enhance learning...
*If* this were to be built in the manner mentioned ("Civ-style simulation computer game") and executed properly as in giving enough backround information/education to make this interesting and well-received it would be a major benefit to teaching and learning History.
I have to add that as a Geek whose degree is in History, I would have Loved this game to learn all about the Pharohs of Egypt or the lines of Chinese Emporers.
Does this mean that the only available download artists are Bryan Adams, Alanis Morrisette and Barenaked Ladies while the "Classic Rock" section is filled with Rush and Gordon Lightfoot?
I can't put my finger on exactly why, but it really seems like NPR should have lead the OSS revolution, producing open content even before Richard Stallman did.
That is my point exactly and I agree with you.
Perhaps it is this: If NPR releases content (i.e. it airs on the Radio) to the public anyways where if you had any recording device you could copy it for free, why on Earth if I am to download and copy it or record it "legally" do I have to Pay for it?

Geeks and Poker?

Many of today's top professional players have nerdly roots such as Mathematicians, chess prodigies, or backgammon champions.
What I love about Poker (and why I am happy it is gaining in popularity) is simply the "reality" of it in that you have real cards, real chips and potentially even real money in your hands. I am contrasting this to the computerized or synthetic elements of online poker or poker video games.
I would expect that this is would not be practical simply from the Legal standpoint.
Can you imagine if the frame-shots got out to the Net? The company would now "lose control" over "their product". This would be a can of worms that would not simply go quietly into that good night.
My friend once got a letter sent from Belize. It was addressed "Tom and Debbie. The Yellow House Next to the Meat Store on Atlantic Ave. Rochester, NY" It took a grand total of 6 days to get there.
Amazing. Seriously the most odd element of this is that it sounds like the Hogwarts invitation where they address it to "Harry Potter, the Cupboard under the Stairs":-) Life imitating art?

No, they haven't perfected the technology yet to prevent the outside collapsing onto the hollow inside ;)

The result will be systems that are simultaneously more sophisticated and easier to understand.
Is this really...Truly possible?
Instead of treating each new idea as a special case, they allow programmers to say what they want to, when they want to, as they want to.
Is this not the Ultimate goal of programming? The Holy Grail of programming perhaps?

The BBC appears to be delivering on its promise of releasing its material to the public - they're modelling their licensing on Creative Commons.
I continue to be very excited about this type of content release and especially in the case of the BBC so that all the Monty Python will be available.
I know here in the states we have NPR's content available for listening and download so how are these two institutions licensing different?
Think about it...It's Open Source and community based and it would look Great on Film!

I live in the Sonora desert.

No! Tucson is not big enough for more than one
Now I would appreciate if if you don't cover up my living area with algea, you insensitive clods!
Maybe they are *trying* or choosing to cover up Tucson/Sonoran Desert! Does Slashdot provide relocation assistance?
..."and Why is this on Slashdot?"
