  1. Re:I don't understand it. on Breast Cancer Gene Lawsuit Argues Patents Invalid · · Score: 1

I disagree. Even having it as a "right for it to be available to you" means other people's time, money, and resources will be forced to be available to an individual whether or those other people wanted to provide it in the first place.

The 2nd issue with health care as a right is that not one ever discusses the responsibilities that go along with that right. For example the 1st amendment gives us freedom of speech but it is limited via many court rulings (i.e. screaming fire in the theater).

So assume for a moment that health care is a right what responsibilities must be put on the individual? For example you have the right to health care if you don't eat like a fat pig and exercise.

I'm afraid in this political environment the rights would be massive with no individual responsibilities.

Does your school/university check your homeworks/theses for plagiarism? Nowadays, probably Yes, but are they doing it properly? Little is known about plagiarism detection accuracy, which is why we conduct a competition on plagiarism detection, sponsored by Yahoo! We have set up a corpus of artificial plagiarism which contains plagiarism with varying degrees of obfuscation, and translation plagiarism from Spanish or German source documents. A random plagiarist was employed who attempts to obfuscate his plagiarism with random sequences of text operations, e.g., shuffling, deleting, inserting, or replacing a word. Except a single breach can get you millions of patients files vs. having to grab a handful of paper charts.

Or once we go digital the odds are all your medical records will be in one stored spot. Get that I have all your info. Right now if you want all my medical info you would have to go to various hospitals/providers/etc. Not as easy and a lot more riskier (i.e. having to break into physical buildings).

Digital records will do a lot good however in this case security (from systems to users not installing crap, etc) have to REALLY be addressed this time around.

And like all things I believe it won;t and simply be dismissed as paranoia :-)

  5. Re:Security? on Why Digital Medical Records Are No Panacea · · Score: 1

No it's not fud. It is a serious concern that many providers have about EMR (electronic medical records). Doesn't mean we don't go down that path but it does mean we have to SERIOUSLY address security this time around.

I've been in the field for many years in various areas (health care, clinical drug trials, pharmaceuticals, etc) and have done several research studies on it for one of my graduate degrees.

In theory it is great access to your medical records, better patient/doctor conversations, ability to easily switch providers. However they are issues (like security) that are not being seriously addressed.

As for your second statement "normalized electronic health record format" we already have started down that road with HIPAA X12 EDI transactions. Standard query and responses for claim submital, claim payment, member benefit and eligibility, etc. Do we have more to do? Yup but standards are coming and guess what I am fine with it!

For those (like me) who have been involved in the HIPAA 4010 rollout (what a "smooth" ride) and now the upcoming HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 conversion (to catch up to the rest of the world) know they are a lot of issues.

But you are right my whole post was simply FUD

Major credit card companies either can't or won;t take the necessary precautions to protect credit card information. So what if there is a breach, identify theft, headaches, etc?

Now what makes you think hospitals, private doctors, etc. are going to be able to protect their data any better? They have less money then the credit card companies.

Can you imagine a million patient digital medical record breach? The black mail or power that could be leveraged over people?

Some good points in the article don't get me wrong. Right now I am going back for my 2nd master's degree. Being a little wiser now then my first time around I know one of the most important things (besides knowledge) is networking especially in this economy.

Seeing a prof. face to face or going for a few beers after class helps build a strong network one can leverage.

I'm not sure the pure online experience will allow for such strong networking. I know a few people who have done the pure online degrees (Univ. of Phoenix) when I ask them about their class mates, networking, etc. pretty much the answer I have received was there was none (or very little).

So it will be interesting to see how that aspect plays out.

So your marginal cost of listening to music went up (buying the better headphones) but your overall marginal benefit went negative (mp3 collections sounds like crap).

I believe the value (benefit - cost) an average user would get out of replacing all their digital mp3s with a better format and getting the better speakers will not be greater then the value of staying put because the cost will still be greater then the benefit.

The exception to my rule of course will be the people who do care about the best sound one can get no matter the cost/benefit realization but I think this is a small percentage of the population.

Except most people are playing their music through basic headphones while going to work, school, gym ,etc. and all the background noises associated with the activities. They are not sitting in a sound proof room with the best speakers, amps, etc. to notice a difference.

For those that might notice the difference I bet you the marginal benefit of getting to the next level does not out weight the marginal cost so people don't care.

More likely it is because the Marginal benefit does not out weigh the marginal cost of the perceived "Value" of the next step up.

How much benefit do I really gain from switching over my digital collection (and the devices)so I can have a better perceived "Value" of sound?

What is the cost of this? First need to replace all Mp3s with a higher quality format. So this costs time and money. More then likely most people are listening to said music through crappy headphones or speaker systems. What will the cost be to get speakers to reproduce the sound from the now "better" music files?
