I own a 1st gen iPod (no speakers, Bluetooth, microphone or GPS) with also the older chipset of the 1st gen iPhone, and it's running firmware 3.1.1 that is latest of Apple, updated with iTunes though official channel. Only if I want to install some software that needs some of the missing hardware that app won't install and tell exactly what feature is missing and why install it's being cancelled. Some odd tower defense game won't install in my iPod because of missing microphone, so fine, one game less and I also understand that I have only generation and model to miss such features.
So even oldest devices have newest firmware, and in the way of updating I got Mail, Maps and all base apps that weren't there when I bought my iPod, though it's still to be seen what will happen with 4.0.
at least Microsoft lets you run arbitrary software on Windows.
And Apple let's you run arbitrary software on MacOS...
This is not a laptop with a full blown operating system, it's a pad designed for few easy tasks, how is difficult for people to understand and stop to compare it with a laptop.
While in very old times "red" and "beautiful" were the same word in russian, it's no longer that way. What is left from that is "Krasnaya Ploshad" originally meaning Beautiful Square and not Red Square like it's known. But in modern times red is "krasnaya" and beautiful "krasivaya" so no more confusion about this:)
With Windows XP SP1 / Firefox 1.0 the hi-jack doesn't work, I see the original CityBank page with no problems. The pop up blocker is activated, of course, who can live without it nowadays?
Portuguese/Spanish? Where did you learn languajes, if you ever bothered? In spanish 'without' is written as 'sin', not too near (1 letter right and 2 wrong)
Not something that will matter to AHBL, but in Spain is practically impossible to take our bussiness elsewhere. Why? Because all the ADSL and high bandwith lines from all spanish telecom companies, end up in Rima/TDE because they were a monopoly until recently, and still almost a pratical monopoly on data lines and home phone lines. So they have blocked almost all spanish companies that have mail servers from sending to anyone using this list. I'm not apologicing for TDE, but Spain this measure is much more harsh than it seems because of this monopoly.
The processor of a Centrino laptop is NOT a Pentium 4 Mobility, it's a Pentium M that is nearer a Pentium 3 with enhanced processing capabilities at the same time as very low power comsumption. In fact at the same MHz is quite faster than a Pentium 4, yet my laptop can reach 6 hours of battery.
But a distro that install easily like SuSE 8.2 (easier than Mandrake in fact last time i tried it) also installs an automatic update, in this case an icon in KDE's systray that will turn red with a big ! that will tell the user to download the available patches for the system. Not like Windows Update that by default downloads first and asks later to install the already downloaded, great for modem users... And it's not like SuSE it's a toy distro, it's one of the certified ones along RedHat, but makes easy to try Linux for the amateurs too, taking care of unpatched systems.
Yahoo! Messenger (not mentioned above and also with a basic but functional unix version) supports unicode and server-side contact list, though I haven't tried in Korean, it works in Spanish, Polish and Russian without problems. And for John Doe it's at least as easy to use, including voice (the best one I've seen so far) and webcam support, than MSN is. Besides, MSN 6 just copied a lot of features that were in Yahoo! Messenger before, like active backgrounds and animated smileys. Another one for innovation...
When the artist that created the copyrighted material is long dead, yet the copyright extensions cause that they are not put in the public domain as it was intended by the original meaning of copyright laws
And you forgot the most important, even if SuSE didn't keep their word on support, they can always contract any company to do for them since it's Open Source
In the spanish article they talk about FREE (as in speech, not as in beer) software, so I don't think they are limiting at all. As it has been said before so many times, this only limits the software that companies can offer to the Andalusian Administration, and not the company. Well, even MS could offer (if they cared) free (as in speech) software. They don't offer it? Well, that's their problem, they have a chance and they don't take it.
Anyway I don't trust this will be done, I'm from Andalucía and not so long ago the Andalusian Government made an offer for helping families to buy new computers. Guess what? As it was written, it was mandatory to buy it along with Windows XP Home or Windows 2000, and MS Office.
I don't know much about the situation in U.S. but at least here in Spain most people, and I mean computer iliterates too, buy computers with no OEM Windows on them. Unless of course, they buy it from a big store and buy a branded one. I guess not many people will admit it, but here is very usual that the installed Windows version is pirated, even the ones intalled by the shop (of course, it's just for testing the components so you can see the computer works, you should delete it afterwards). I agree it's bad, but the situation that we are is that there's almost no choice (no, Linux is not fully ready for the desktop, try to ask my mother to use it) and the price here is horribly high, as much as 25% of the cost of the computer just for Win98, WinMe is even more expensive.
But the sad part is that getting Linux isn't easy either, hard to get in shops and not really cheap, though much cheaper than Windows. There's no Linux on most computer stores, unless you live on the top 5 biggest cities, and then many times they are old versions of the distributions. Buy through Internet? Here students don't have a credit card, just a debit one at most, so no way either. And sadly there's a lot of copying of Linux disfribution because of all this.
If it was easier to get Linux in Spain, I know many many students and people that enjoy computers (geeks? not really, at least not the way seen by americans) would buy them, but the nearest shop to my place is 200 km away and with a very limited quantity. Yes, people that care can pass over all difficulties to get his/her prefered distribution, but most of the time you do what's easier, if just they took seriously the Linux market in Spain they would sell a lot.
About Windows, unless they make it much cheaper (I guess that when the hell freezes over) they won't sell much, no matter how much marketing they make (very little here by the way).
Finally I'd like to know in which other countries this is the same way, and if it's really so hard in the U.S. to buy a new computer without Windows in them. Even not branded ones have Windows even if you don't ask for it?
Just on point were we can compare China and the USA, both countries have death penalty, even if not on all states, and this is the supposedly most advanced country in the World. And do you believe the law will be really repealed? Why it should be? The RIAA is the one paying big amounts of money to get the law passed, and *most* people among the voters don't know about the DMCA and it's implications, so they will keep voting the ones that passed the DMCA while getting their pockets full.
Nikolai is his equivalent russian name, but Nikola is his true serbian name, so a bit of respect ;)

First, I agree completely in that broken iPhones is fault of the owners, not Apple.
But why should be Apple forced to sell unlocked phones? If you don't like their offer, then don't buy a locked iPhone. That's free market.

No, AMD named their chips after breeds of horses, those two just happen to be cars too.
