I should mention I tried a few other DEs, Mate, xfce, and a couple others which I've now forgotten - mostly tools like the file browsers feel like a regression back into the 1990s. What do you mean I can't click and drag files and get a popup asking what I can do with them (move, copy, etc)? KDE feels like the least annoying of the bunch as far as usability, but that's not something to strive for.
Several months ago the distribution I use decided to force plasma on everyone, and for me it made my desktop unusable. It was crashing all the time and doing other strange things. I was told to use the nvidia driver instead of nouveau but that made no difference whatsoever, so, quite annoyed, I went back to kde4 which was in some really strange state due to the way packages are handled (some things required kde5???)
Recently after trying to apply updates it was not possible to stay on kde4 unless you stopped updating. kde5 is now stable that I turned off all compositing and desktop effect crap. HOWEVER, task switching is so damn slow it constantly interrupts my workflow. You press alt+tab, and nothing happens. You press it again, nothing happens. You press it three times in a row, and FINALLY, it decides to scroll through open windows. It's frustrating as hell, and yes, I've tried changing task switcher properties, and none of the many settings I've tried fixes this.
I wish I just hadn't updated my PC, security fixes be damned.
First of all, the last thing we need is more effective advertising.
If anything, people in driveless cars aren't going to be seeing any of those advert billboards anyway... they'll be busy reading or using their smartphone.
I tried it on a machine with utf8 set up properly (as far as I can tell) and it does that. Maybe it's part of the joke - in the future maybe it'll deal with unicode properly!
Yeah, it is annoying that you cannot change the battery by yourself in most phones. Of the ones listed in that article only the G5 has a user-swappable battery, it ejects out the bottom of the phone.
Sure, it's supported. Usable, that's a whole different story.
We do have iPhone 4 and 4s phones in our organization now, and users are complaining they are slow. Must be an Apple fan, it does not register in your brain that all these updates slow down these phones, in some cases dramatically so. I'm pretty sure there was a story on this site with users of older iPads saying they updated their device by mistake and performance is terrible and there's no way to go back to the old version.
As opposed to Apple released an update that turns your phone into molasses after 16-18 months? This actually happened to me with the first (and subsequently last) iPhone purchase. I wasn't about to reward them with another purchase. I've been using the Android phones for 3+ years between replacements.
Memorize it! Just don't take any head injuries or you won't remember anything.
More seriously, back up to hard drives is the only viable option. Then make sure you have more than one backup drive and store one at some other site. Relative maybe?
Cloud options with that kind of storage would take forever to upload. And I've heard of people having stuff randomly go missing on their cloud service, not the entire contents, but a file here and there. I'm not so sure that's a good option.
For storing on-site you can get a fire rated media safe, but they can be quite a bit more expensive than a regular safe.
One of our incumbent ISPs is in the process of installing fibre in our city, and it's supposed to be done by the end of next year.
I saw the main trucks stringing fibre up and down the street last week (all underground in my neighbourhood.)
What they've done is they'll install it for free when the trenching crew is in the neighbourhood, but if you decide not to you will have to pay the install costs (which will probably be hundreds of dollars as everything is underground.)
I was more thinking that if they booby trap the lock, the thieves will resort to freezing and breaking the chain instead...
I was more thinking another cloud service bites the dust, but at least they're trying to warn the users their content will be unavailable.

Bobbleheads beware!

Maybe their Chinese manufacturing plants took some shortcuts? Been known to happen, not just on phones, but other things too.

Yes. Not sure if that machine I was at had utf8 set up though. I will try on a different machine later.
I had I good chuckle when I read the mouseover text on that one...

Or "the boat hauls ass" could mean it's fast or a donkey is on board.
A Samsung OLED?!
This is the exact reason why I bought my scanner separate from my printer. At least if one craps out I can still use the other...
Just make sure the duck tape doesn't have metal woven in. Then everyone'll bitch about how the wifi doesn't work. :-)

I'd be perfectly OK with my phone being around 1cm thick if the battery lasted for 3+ days. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Dammit, now I have to wipe tea off my monitor!!
Yep. Looked into an iPhone for a user at work, and they're $1200 here. We don't do contracts.
Can get an Android with comparable performance for hundreds less.
In addition, I forgot the 3-2-1 backup principle. 3 copies of data, on at least 2 different types of media, and 1 copy off-site.
Memorize it! Just don't take any head injuries or you won't remember anything.

Or just make the phone thicker so it has more rigidity... the HORROR.

Where is the "Sad but True" mod. Google basically does search us.
