Why do you say that? Finding a lower cost of energy support an energy intensive infrastructure seems like they are the same goal. Plumbing takes electricity to keep water pressure, in these small pips so they won't need to build giant aqueducts to keep all the water moving downhill. Another nice thing about solar, is that it doesn't need large expensive plants. So they can be better distributed without a huge infrastructure.
It comes from a long line of Nerd hate. Back in the 1980's the good old IBM vs Apple debate. Then it moved to a command line vs GUI debate. by 1990's With Windows becoming the dominate "OS" Windows 3.1 was more of an advance shell for DOS, and the inclusion of a large range of PC Compatibles it morphed further to General Purpose PC's vs. Apple. During these geek wars for the past generation, had diminished Apple. Then during the late 1990's Apple switch to "Cute" with the Fruit Colored iMac. And the Powerbook. Which were popular enough to get a few converts. But the geek debates were much less than as the PC was still the victor. However you got the Linux fanboys joining up with the Apple Fanboys as Microsoft was the common enemy, giving Apple a bit of an edge, and impression of the underdog outsider.
Then there was the iPod, which was popular. That allowed people to get interested in Macs again. so during the 00's Macs were getting popular with Microsoft messing up with major security problems with Windows XP and failures like ME. A lot of the people switched to Macs to avoid being boring PC guys. But this caused the hate wars to begin again. As apple is now becoming a major player on the block. No longer the underdog, but a major influencing threat. The Linux allies broke off and started to side more with Microsoft on the grounds that you can get more versatile hardware.
Then Apple changed the game with the iPhone. Which spawned tablets and other touch devices. Which diminished the popularity of Personal Computers in general. So the war moved mostly to Apple vs Android, however interests in Macbooks vs PC's have diminished. But in terms of Hardware manufacture Apple is the big name, and who do we have as a popular PC manufacturer? No longer IBM, Compaq, Gateway, and Dell. Lenovo Thinkpads keeps the business market. But the others not so much, as the big name. So the underdog PC's are now getting Apple hate.
The problem is the government is not considering it part of our needed infrastructure. In some ways I wish there was internet available for everyone for the common good. However there is a lot of innovation going on in this area. So a Government Internet will soon be slow and out of date.
Even if they were forward thinking imagine late 1990's giving everyone a T1 line (Faster than what most people could ever use, much like gigabit fiber today). But even after a few years the T1 line is slower than what we can get with older Cell Wireless Data.
I expect by Wireless we mean Data from Cell Services. Not your local Wi-Fi router plugged into a wired connection. Most of us haven't ever created a full wired network in our house. We just plug our Wi-Fi router in and good to go. But it is still wired as there is a Cable Connection, Fiber Optic, Or Lanline connecting to our house.
Yes it is. But Wireless is more convenient. And most of us have some sort of wireless data plans on our devices anyways, so even though broadband is cheaper and faster. It would be a redundant expense for some people. Myself I have a cheap data plan, enough for a few google searches and the occasional youtube video while I am waiting. And I do most of my browsing off of Broadband. But I keep an eye on the rates, Performance and coverage. I wouldn't mind dropping broadband for my home, if I got a good enough data plan wirelessly.
Back in them good old days which the republicans look fondly on. Had companies that had their own R&D areas. Where they toyed with designs and ideas, some not profitable, but often would lead further to greater innovation. I am good with Government funded R&D it is very useful. However a good Private R&D is needed too.
Government by nature is very risk adverse, meaning its R&D can have solid funding, however on tasks with a higher chance of success. Private will be more willing to take risks, however its funding is more fickle.
Just curious. We as human are so intune to relate with humans, that a CG Human would look lifeless and fake, especially when animated. Non-Humans not so much so, as we don't relate on the same level. But would a bear watching it have a uncanny valley when seeing another bear?
"But the company may still face criticism because their new cups can be recycled -- but not composted."
Often I find that the environmental types (not the scientists who are environmentalists) are often pressure companies so much that they will end up doing nothing. When a company tries to do the right thing, they should be rewarded for it, not shunned because they couldn't go all the way. The key problem is there are tradeoffs that happen, and will the consumers be willing to take those tradeoffs. A compostable k-cup may not keep freshness.
Exactly. Also to the point if he blew the whistle for our interest or did he do it for shameless self promotion to show how great he is. Initially I was leading toward him mostly doing what he thought was right however I thought he did it the wrong way. But lately he is just being a self promoter.
The issue is that one protester eggs the policemen for them to make a bad judgment call. So yes the policeman is technically at fault. And a press release where the Organization is saying it was only that guy or small group, still will get egg, because the media will normally edit the content to make their broadcast more interesting.
We all make mistakes. As a person and as an institution. With the internet the mistakes we take come back to haunt us over and over again. Never mind the fact that there are a lot of protesters who try to make a martyr out of themselves by walking the line and pushing the peace keepers to their limits, Just to show how bad the people are. Bad things are easy to explain and gets people's attention. Good things are often complex and boring. So we now live our lives judged bases on our lives at our worst never us at our best.
I expect Google decision is based off of number of users more than the age of the OS's XP is way too old. Vista has such a small number of users who care about upgrading so why bother with them. The same with the older OS Xs Apple provides an inexpensive upgrade path so there shouldn't be that much hassle if you have a newer system.
Supporting older systems is always a pain. 1. There is a small but obnoxiously vocal group of users. Who are very angry that they can't do newer stuff on a computer that is a decade old. However to accommodate these people you will need to sacrifice newer features available in the newer systems that will make the majority of people much happier.
2. Testing on older OS's gets tiresome.
3. More problems to fix. The further you go back the more problems you will need to fix. And how much time do you need to waste to get Vista Compatibility for such a small portion of users.
Bad code deserves explanation not insults. We have all written bad code, we were getting tired, the deadline was looming, your head just wasn't in the right frame of mind, etc... Sometimes what people see as bad code is just because you needed to sacrifice a tradeoff to get an other advantage. The "best practice" may take too slow for the current set of data. So some crazy method may be needed to fix the solution. Or perhaps there was mountains of working code, and you needed to put a workaround.
Well customers are demanding more Cloud/Remote hosted systems than systems that they can install on their internal network or their own PC's. A lot of these Mature Programmers are use to making applications based on Local systems access, where backdoors are just part of the design. They will rarely plan out the entire process. Sure the New tools may prevent buffer overflows, and SQL injections... However that feature that needs to solve a problem, just may open a door open to an attack. An improperly checked eval statement, including extra libraries that you don't need. Using a third party app who just didn't use such methods.
Also most of these apps are based on Older Code sets, Taking a PC App and just changing the UI to be Web Based.
Now I am not blaming the programmers. Almost every time this type of stuff happens the programmers make a fuss then get given an option to do it the quick way or find another job.
As I see it, they should in general apply the same rules.
If you got in without permission, but you didn't break anything. Trespassing. If you got in and broke the server/software. Breaking and Entering If you stole data, theft (based on the value of the data) If you sold the data corporate espionage.
In general it would be the same laws of old if you entered a building and started sifting threw the paper files, or changing data etc....
Now if a shop locked their door, but they broke in due to a known but unreported fault in the lock, then the company should be able to sue the lock maker. Just as if someone breaks into your company because the software vendor said it was safe, but it wasn't and they knew about it.
Yes it could be abused. However Google tried to put in safeguards in their specs that is a bit more useful then Microsoft did with activeX which is still the bane of Internet security. However the web is no longer a content delivery engine but a cross system application platform. Sure you may not like it, but it turned out it be that. But as an application platform it will need to grow and change with the times. If not then you will get less planned out 3rd party crap again on your browser like ActiveX, Java Applets, Flash, etc... For your standard browsing and such apps will have a limit on what OS they will run on or have different upgrade scheduled.
I don't like Trump and I am scaird to think of him as president. However protesting Amazon for selling his goods that he was selling before he ran as president sound more like stereotypical liberal intolerance to contending ideas. Don't target the store selling the goods where there is a population that seems to demand it. Use the energy to boycott trump products not pressure the store to not offer it. If the stores stop selling then these products will just be more valuable.
Is there really that much fragmentation. Or just a small group of whiners. While the rest who are using Ubentu for a desktop system really don't care. Sure you can use Ubuntu as a mission critical server, but there are better distributions for that.
Was it only Bill Clinton who signed it. I don't see any statement that the First Lady had any responsibility in executive functions. As anyone who is married knows your SO doesn't always sees eye to eye with you.
Judging Hillary Clinton for what her husband does isn't really fair.
When you have a government VPN catering to about 1/2 of the world's population. You cannot sufficiently lock it down to an ideal settings, as even if you have 1% of the population deserving and exception that is 30 million people who you need to modify. Because of this, it is very easy to find a flaw, as there is a lot of holes to take advantage of.
Also the problem with communism is the idea in order for it to function the entire population will need to be onboard with the communal living. That just can't happen, so we have groups of people who are more connected to the party who gain more advantages and leeway, while others who are not part of the solution receive harsher treatment, as a way to get them to follow the party method.
Why do you say that? Finding a lower cost of energy support an energy intensive infrastructure seems like they are the same goal.

Well if I were trying to replace my TWAIN scanner drivers with a different method.
The problem is a bad IT Staff can still keep the company running. While a good staff if allowed can have the company expand and grow.
However the real question other than years of experience is their staff actually really good at their job?

These are a lot of issues from the last civil war. It is just at some point the Democrats became Republicans and the Republicans became Democrats.
