However the college was spending a lot of money to build new buildings for classrooms. While it would be cheaper and easier to refurbish the existing classrooms, they will spend more money for a new building.

Why? Because it is easier to get Alumni support for making a new building vs. trying to refurbish some rooms, hence the students were urged to not publish those results and come up with an alternative solution.

There are spots where colleges can save a lot of money, and not hinder quality of the education and research. But colleges are more interested in other things then education and learning.

  17. Re:The customer is wrong I guess.... on Biggest Headache For Game Developers: Abusive Fans · · Score: 4, Insightful

There is a big difference between complaining about something and being abusive about it, we seem to not understand this concept anymore.

    Step 1:
Don't assume your adversary is evil or has some evil agenda. Most people want to do the right thing, however they made wrong decisions along the way.

    Step 2:
Discuss your problems rationally. Get some sleep before you start ranting about something. Ok you are frustrated at this level, perhaps because you have been playing the game for 30 hours straight. And it is you that is blacking out every 5 minutes and not the game. Figure out how big of a deal it is. You love the game but your arm polygons sometimes go threw a wall.

    Step 3:
Realize that Perhaps you are not the target audience. I mean the "Pony Unicorn Princess" Game is a bit too girly for a 30 something guy. Or "Hell Killer: Mountain of blood", is giving your 4 year old nightmares.

    Step 4:
Focus on the good points too. If you are going to tell someone your product sucks and you will never buy it anymore, they won't care, they lost (past tense) a customer. If you give them the good points and the bad points then they could be loosing (present tense) a customer and they may be more open minded.

    Step 5:
Realize if you complain about something, it doesn't make you seem smart. There is the idea that the Intelligent person must be complaining about something and people who are in generally happy must be dumb, isn't really the case. If you like it, it is OK. Stop trying to find faults in everything.

Now you can complain about stuff.
Lets say the game says it should work on your system requirements, but it doesn't load up. Or you get bugs that prevent you from winning, you can complain about those, however you should also preference with the fact you like the game otherwise.

Usually you get the following factors I call it the 6P(mostly).
    Price
    Performance
    Power
    Portability
    Programs
    (Ph/F)eatures

Now at any given time there is a demand for some balance of these, however it isn't usually sure where the sweet spot is as it can change.

Price, sure the lesser the better... However if you are selling these things you want to make as much money as possible per unit, People are willing to spend so much for something until it becomes too big of desion and will need to weigh the other 5 P's

Performance, Yeah we want the fastest, but how much is that going to cost, and do we really need it to be fast for our use for it.

Power, how long will the battery last, will it affect its portability.

Portability, how small and light is it. Is is rugged enough for my daily use, does it have the Features that will allow me to be portable with it, does it look good to have on my person...

Programs, like features, however you can add your own. How good are the programs available, how many of them are their.

Features, what does it do what doesn't it do. Can I live with what it doesn't do.

Now different stuff has a different balance of this stuff. I have a crossover Lenovo thinkpad laptop/tablet. I have gained in Performance, Features, and Programs, but I lost out portability, power, and price. But I like it, because it fits my needs.

However we really don't know what the people want until it is out. You can have as many checks to see if people like it as you want. But you will never know until it is released.

The "Obesity Epidemic" Started in the late 1990's, Before that it wasn't a big problem.
We often blame the "Obesity Epidemic" on things like Soda/Pop, Fast Food, Junk Food snacks...
However these food foods have been around for many generations, I would expect if they were a major cause to the "Obesity Epidemic" then they would have shown up much earlier after they started to gain popularity.

So either something changed in these foods that makes them different then they were a hundred years ago (such a replacing Sugar, with Corn Syrup) Or there is an other cause, probably more complex that average Joe doesn't want to think of.

My Hypothesis is to the "Obesity Epidemic" is the rise in Mass Media creating fear.
Pre-Late 1990's much of new media came from 3 TV stations, and news papers. Which for the most part were rather toned down and didn't try to put people in a major panic about everything. Sure the Russians wanted to blow us up, but that gave us a single enemy to look at. But now we have breaking news on everything, and every little detail is analysed and shown how it will react in a worse case... News of kids missing anywhere in the US is getting headlines, discussion of all the other problems all begins to weigh on us. We have been trained to be afraid of the world.

So we are afraid of the world, we won't let our kids to go outside and play, because we are afraid of the Sex Offender across the street will take them away, or if they accidentally step on the neighbors flower they will get hit by a massive lawsuit. Or if you see other kids you are too scared to discipline them when they are doing something dangerous or wrong, because you are afraid that you will get some sort of child abuse claim against you....
So we keep our kids inside all day. Kids have energy but they don't have means to burn it so they are playing video games all day... However their body is growing so it is telling them they should eat, so they eat, but it leads to excess.
If we are adults and we are afraid of the world we put on a few pounds early on mostly because we grew up and didn't adjust our food intake to match our adult needs. However we don't want to be seen as the Fat Guy at the Gym, or the Fat Guy running down the street, that TV Comedies like making fun of. So we will tend to stay inside or do activities that are safe from ridicule. Then combined with the body image that you are Fat means you will begin to accept your weight as part of you identity and not really try too hard to change it. Sure we will try some fad diets loose 10-20 lbs but it will ware us out and will put them back on, plus some. Being that it is called an "Obesity Epidemic" means we are not completely at fault either, because it is part of a bigger problem, so we will sit and weight for those who are smarter then us to solve it.

This Fear model tends to make sense with the trends of higher Obesity.
Uneducated: Untrained in dealing with information, more prone to throw stuff out of proportion.
Poor: Often Uneducated, however they are worrying about making it to the next day, so they will do what they need to get to the next day, however fearing what will happen tomorrow.
Minority Races: Fear of going out, as they are prone to more suspicion, even if they are just doing the same thing the Majority Race is doing.

Sure eating junk food in excess will not be healthy... However they are fine in moderation, and with balance of healthy living.
