  1. Trade off std head phone jack on The Verge's Essential Phone Review: An Arcane Artifact From an Unrealized Future (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

Apple eliminated std head phone jack but offered water proof. So a give get. As for wireless charging. I sometimes need to use my phone while charging. Video calls zap battery. The Essential seems decent on specs/price, regular Android and potentially a more trustworthy Co.(hopefully no spyware) but if camera a little below par then will hurt especially if affects the neat attachments-which are pluses for the device.

  3. While annoying SW bugs generally get fixed. HW design weaknesses kind of stuck. The Surface has nifty features but appears fragile which should be understood by prospective buyers. I have a 5 yr old Vaio SVZ 1311AJ no issues but can't open to clean without risk of breaking due to very tight connections. Can clean moderately using pressurized air but over time dust collects inside so heats up more now. Would like to get a new device since overdue for a failure but SP4 pro seems risky.

  4. Deal time on Uber Shareholder Group Wants Benchmark Off Board (axios.com) · · Score: 1

Benchmark can cut a sweet deal now cash out half at around $4B and lose its board seat. They can still gets some upside later if there is any or at least bank some safe profit now. SoftBank mentioned possible interest but they might want a board seat and better price since things kind of messy now , so there is merit to the damage control assertions though hard to quantify. Uber does need to get focused to preserve its astronomical valuation. Unless they come up with solid tech such as self driving patents , their software for assigning drivers not that valuable and other entrants can copy with moderate financial backing - fear Amazon and Facebook etc...

  6. FoxConn WI? on Can Elon Musk Be Weaned Off Government Support? (thehill.com) · · Score: 1

Why aren't more US Co's making deals like FoxConn in WI ? Presumably other businesses could create jobs with such high support. Of course FoxConn has a brand and makes tech products vs cheese but it ain't easy being cheesy. FoxConn will do better coz they'll get the cheddar.

  7. Plug Power rec'd backing for several hundred millions from Amazon and Walmart for fuel cells for warehouse forklifts. More specialized use cases like a forklift may offer better potential near term since vehicles operate around a central location. Later the storage , transport costs which appear high for suburban homes may not need for personal use. Instead focus on fleet vehicles where economies of scale more practical. Modest technological advances like catalysts will help but a ways off for wide spread deployments. Japan seems to be only place with optimism that fuel cells might be a solution and investing in R&D. Japan needs especially as nuclear was a literal disaster and could be again due to seismic volatility of landscape. Still some danger in fuel cells but overall lower and not long term.

  8. Phone is in pocket since walking perhaps hands occupied. Alerts easy to view on watch to evaluate if should react quickly or later. If need a quick response can do voice or simple presets like "ok", "busy now ", etc... Convenient BT remote for selfies now can participate in pics. Can use the phone finder too when misplace. Pairs with BT chest strap HRM for jogging . Has built in HRM for more stationary checking. Helpful to proactively manage limited battery. Put in standby when not using. It is currently a tweener accessory with modest use cases. At a few hundred dollars priced more than a simple watch but less than designer watch. Just like a tool box it can be useful for some depending on use. If exercise or hiking a larger use Garmin might be better but if have an iPhone iWatch a versatile all around accessory. I get my money's worth use it many times per week for convenience that is worth more than a boutique coffee or other beverage. If Apple offers a a cellular version then hope they offer flexible power options vs always on.

  9. Sprint lost ~39K? subs in last quarter yet should have a n many places ample spectrum , don't know about infrastructure, but would imagine less subs would offer less congestion plus their rates lower. Only one post mentioned Sprint for being able to make a call in Co. when the big 2 had issues. Guess Sprint users are enjoying their Tidal subscriptions and not wasting bandwidth on /.

Latest fad . Ooh we need in on that too.

  11. Video chat tablet on Facebook Is Working On a Video Chat Device (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

Seems like a general tablet with enhancemed mic system , speaker and a nice wide angle camera might be worth an OEM offering. The mic system might be better as a detachable base as charger and extended battery for distance use. The current small mic and standard speaker in tablets would suffice for close use like on lap or nearby table. Guessing the voice assistant apps migh work better with a tailored hardware & software kit but at the cost of user flexibility. Android seems best with maybe a Fire OS option. Amazon has their look but pairing with a display device that can run Android or Fire would be more flexible.

Dominos Pizza when founded value has increased substantially, Iridium well not so fortunate but only time will tell. Think taking a chance on space flight among the more constructive gambles vs say SnapChat.

  16. Since FoxConn does not share their business strategy to show projected ROI on this Potential investment the sky is the limit on guessing rationales. Lower Costs = unlikely Strategic location = not to far from O'hare airport a mid-west hub, along with train freight and trucking highways so ok relative to East Coast but not a major advantage. A hedge against supply disruptions if political tensions arise seems possible though other countries could offer similar benefits cheaper except for the military might and USD. Terry Gou shrewdly prolonged negotiations with Sharp for concessions on contingencies and deteriorating situation at the Company. Think FoxConn will require some of the soft promises to be firmed up in writing befor proceeding full speed and until then move slowly ahead with awareness to Walker, Ryan and gang can walk away if favorable environment fades. Still a positive development for WI & US to be in the consideration phase but the tough work lies ahead getting factory built and producing. Motorola built a few nice plants in Northern Illinois including Galvin's hometown of Harvard the latter never fully ramped up and barely used before being shuttered. So things can change. A modest applause warranted now but save the yippees and yahoo bragging until there is some solid substance and economic benefits created.

The example of killer robots is FUD but one that leaves a simple image for the masses. AI could develop in many other ways for good or bad. Now is a good time to discuss since most folks do not know much about the ramifications and what could be done to mitigate really bad abuses of power from AI. So props to both Elon and Mark for their public banter to raise awareness, though Elon emphasized the risks considerations more cautiously.

Japanese have astronauts to ISS , satellites, even remote drones selected to operate on moon. Meanwhile population aging rapidly, large public debt, Tsukishima nuclear meltdown clean-up, Olympics boondoggle underway and still struggling to move the famous Tsukiji fish market. It is their country so free to pursue as they fancy but would thin better to Focus on AI , machine learning, robotics etc.. Plus as others mentioned Gray imports where sold in another country cheaper whether due to foreign exchange fluctuations or other favorable pricing factors. Stores offer loyalty programs for future purchase discounts but these are modest vs some of the e-commerce sites. Mobile phone companies typically can use IMEIs to help track gray and unauthorized product distribution. Maybe a new kind of sneaker net will evolve to counter the price cutters.
