The Byte is, perhaps, the smallest data unit to be processed, thus, you will be saying that, NOW, that we have 64 bit processors, we should use "64-bit" units?

Communication devices understand binary signals, they can be coded into symbols, that are completely unrelated to "bytes", so there is no reason for talking about "Bytes" in layers like Physical or Link.

  20. Re:(2.4bits/s/Hz)? on CSIRO Demonstrates Fastest Wireless Link Yet · · Score: 1

In a digital communication system you transmit symbols instead of bits, that is to take advantage of your bandwidth. For example, on your carrier of 2.4GHz you are allowed to use only a band of frequency, and you want to transmit the higher amount of data per second as possible, so you might thing about transmitting sinusoids of 128 different amplitudes (in the physical part) and that could represent 128 different symbols. You are not transmitting binary (only 2 amplitudes) and consequently, you have a more efficient system.

Unluckily, that doesn't always work, and in fact many systems decide to use less than one bit in order to avoid other several problems like ISI (Inter-Symbol interference) which is, in the case of wireless, the effect of reflections against walls, etc.

So many wireless systems use suboptimal (in terms of symbols) to achieve longer distances or reduce interference due to moving objects, etc. That is why a modulation system can be expressed in terms of bits/sec/Hz and it's in some sense a measure of efficiency of the system, however, an interference study has to be performed, and for sure it will be tough getting long distances if there is not a good coding scheme to avoid the ISI.

In conclusion, not everything is attenuation, but also reflections and systems have to be robust to these effects.

Agree with Damattser. I think the amount of foreign students in the US is constantly growing, and if another country provides education and high level research, people will also tend to go there.

Mainly, Americans have to be convinced that they can go do research also. The average undergrad student (if they get there) gets a job and runs away from the academy. Many high school students ran because they started making money.

US should motivate students to go for their graduate studies. It amazing the amount of asian (chinese and indian) people currently on technology programs.

So don't be so sure, after all, US had to "import" science to make important advances (Let's name just one... Albert Einstein?).

A think US has been in the lead, but all this budget they have been using for war, might cause a reduction of graduate students and slow down the pace of US Science. US have to start motivating people to stay in graduate programs with good incentives. And US Universities should be involved in that process.
